3 FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 11, 2014 PAGE 3 Parish of St. Benedict where all are welcome Reflecting on God s Word At the end of the day, shepherds would bring their sheep to a common sheepfold, leading them through a gate that was guarded during the night. Shepherds would give names to their sheep and call to them when daylight came, leading them back out to pasture. Because the sheep recognized the shepherd s voice there was no mix-up with sheep that belonged to others. The idea that shepherds had a name for each of their sheep brings home the difference between a good shepherd and a stranger. The good shepherd was concerned not only for the flock but for each sheep in it. He knew them and they knew him. They will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers (John 10:5). There are two words in Greek for good agathos and kalos. Agathos refers to moral goodness, as in being a good person. Kalos refers to being good at something. Certainly Jesus is the Good Shepherd in both senses, but the word used here is kalos, emphasizing his being good at shepherding. Jesus knows his sheep by name, leads them to safety when darkness falls, and returns them to pasture. He was willing to lay down his life for them. Most comforting of all, he came then and comes now so we might have life and have it more abundantly. That s right, this summer the teens and core members are going on a weekend retreat to cool San Diego! Steubenville San Diego takes place at the University of San Diego on July with the theme being God is.... Scholarships and fundraising opportunities are available to cover the cost of $200 per teen which takes care of food, dorm room, and the conference itself. Sign-up and registration forms are available in the lobby and space is limited. If you have any questions, please contact David Rees at drees@stbenedict.org. EPIC NEXT WEEK: STRATUM LASER TAG Hey high schoolers! Did you miss us? Because we missed you! We are back in action (literally) next week, Sunday, May 18, as we head over to Stratum Laser Tag! DivorceCare is a faith-based seminar/group that works to support folks through these times and help them to move on. We meet on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm in Room 2 of the church. We invite those who are in need of healing in their lives (physical, emotional, and spiritual) to come forward and join us in the celebration of this beautiful sacrament. Our Pastoral Care Ministry will provide a lunch following the Mass. Please contact the parish office to RSVP: BOTTLED WATER DRIVE I was thirsty, and you gave me drink... - Matthew 25:35 The Gospel calls us to bear fruit in works of justice and peace, with sensitivity to those who are most in distress. We will be collecting bottled water this summer urgently needed by the poor and the homeless. Please bring whatever you can to Masses the weekend of May Donations will continue to be accepted throughout the summer by dropping them off in the parish lobby. St. Benedict will again host families through the Family Promise Program from June Dozens of families and individuals from our parish helped make our hosting last summer a joyful and rewarding experience. Family Promise has a long, successful record of providing families who have lost their homes with the tools and training to get back on their feet. Because there is a shortage of emergency shelter for homeless families in the valley, faith communities help provide meals and overnight lodging to families who have been accepted into this rigorous program (more information is available at familypromiseaz.org). It s easy to help! Three to four families (about 16 people) will have an evening meal and stay overnight at St. John Bosco. We just need you and your family, friends or ministry group for an evening to provide a meal and fellowship to the families. We also need volunteers to serve as overnight hosts (we provide the comfy beds for you to sleep), and/or help with set up, clean up and laundering of bedding. HEALING OF MEMORIES WORKSHOP FOR VETERANS The Franciscan Renewal Center is hosting a free Healing of Memories Workshop for Veterans on Friday, May 16, through Sunday, May 18, facilitated by Fr. Michael Lapsley, SSM.* The Workshop was created in response to the healing needed from emotional, psychological and spiritual wounds inflicted by war, human rights abuses, and other traumatic circumstances. It is considered a major step helping veterans begin their journey to healing by providing a safe place for participants to explore personal histories and gain insight and empathy for themselves and others. Participation provides a safe experiential and interactive way to overcome feelings of anger, loss, grief and guilt and can be one step on the journey to healing and wholeness. It contributes not only to personal healing, but also to the healing of interpersonal relationships. The Workshop is provided at no cost to Veterans. Michael Lapsley, SSM In 1990, Father Lapsley, an Anglican Priest, lost both hands and an eye as a result of a letter bomb sent to his home during his involvement in the antiapartheid struggle in South Africa. Accompanied by prayers, love and support from around the world, he then began a journey from victim to survivor to victor. He worked with South Africa s Truth and Reconciliation Commission and later founded the Institute for the Healing of Memories. He works internationally in areas of conflict with others who have experienced violence of many kinds.
