Because they were so poor, she worked as a washer woman and a school janitor to earn enough money so that he could go to the seminary. (In those days, the family had to pay for the seminarian s education.) When he was installed as Pope, his mother was present, and as was the custom, she kissed his large papal ring. She then presented her tiny hand with her wedding ring and said, Now you kiss my ring - for without it, you never would have received yours! 2 Fourth of Easter Parish News Save the Date!!! Fr. John Loya 40 th Anniversary Mass and Reception 5:30 Mass Saturday, June 7, 2014 All are invited to come share in joyful celebration as we praise and thank God for Fr. John s 40 years of service as a priest (18 years with Holy Martyrs!) on Saturday, June 7 th at the 5:30 Mass with a reception to follow. Interested in helping? Have a photo or story or memory to share? Please contact Robin or robinhawk3@gmail.com Pastor s Notes The life of every Christian and every parish is meant to reflect the core of the Easter message of the first Christian community, We have seen the Lord. Being a Christian, being a parish, starts with the personal experience of the Risen Christ in our community and in our hearts. Being a disciple, following Christ, is about our personal response. It isn t enough to know that others have seen the Lord. Discipleship begins when we experience it ourselves. Over the past few years, we have been hard at work recreating and reinventing many of the ministries at Holy Martyrs. Our PSR has been expanded and its content greatly improved. We have introduced the new Spirit program for our Middle school students that is vibrant and engaging. Our Life Teen program continues to grow and is making a real difference in the lives of our teens. World Day of Prayer for Vocations In 1963 Pope Paul VI designated Good Shepherd as World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, protects us as his flock and promises us the gift of eternal life. As followers of Jesus we are called to remain faithful to the grace of God. As we celebrate this feast we pray for fidelity to our vocation. The Church invites us to honor the vocation of all Christians given at Baptism. May we who have dedicated our lives to God through the vocation of marriage, priesthood, diaconate, consecrated life, and the single life remain faithful to our commitments. May those who are discerning their life vocation listen to the grace of God to guide them. Prayer for Vocations God, Our Father, Thank you for your son, Jesus, our Good Shepherd, who leads us to fullness of life. By our Baptism, we are called by name to continue the mission of Jesus. Give us the grace to listen with an open heart to the voice of Jesus and to respond generously with a joyful spirit. Strengthen the men and women you called to serve through marriage, the single life, the diaconate, priesthood, and consecrated life. Guide all who are discerning their Christian vocation. In gratitude we offer this prayer through Jesus and the Holy Spirit, united with you forever. Amen. At the same time, we have seen the ongoing development of our RCIA, of Women s spirituality, of prayer forms both traditional such as the May Crowning and those that are new like Taizé prayer. The Just Faith program is helping parishioners grow in their commitment to social justice, while our Seniors Group is providing activities, friendships and spiritual opportunities to our more seasoned members. Following the lead of Pope Francis, our outreach to the poor has expanded with our co-sponsoring Friendship Meals with our sister parish in Cleveland, La Sagrada Familia, and in our growing relationship with our diocesan mission in El Salvador. Couples faith sharing groups are helping married couples deepen their relationships and faith. None of these existed a few years ago. All are a sign of the growth and renewal of Holy Martyrs parish. None of these would be possible without the generous sharing of time and talent and the financial support of our parishioners. To sustain the good things we are doing and to ensure our future, our parish has begun taking part in a diocesan program called Grateful Giving, to help us consider the spiritual foundation of giving that makes all that we do possible. Many of our members have already received a mailing about this program and why it matters so much. I encourage every member and every household to prayerfully consider its message. It is not simply about giving. It is about helping us See the Lord in our own lives, growing as a parish, and becoming the people God meant us to be. Easter Blessings! Father Steve

July Meeting will be at Wolf Creek Environmental Center - more information to follow! Throughout the Diocese 2014 First Step Programs: Continuing education regarding marriage and divorce in the Catholic Church Attempting to pick up the pieces of one s life after the tragedy of divorce is complex and demanding. One of the significant issues that a person faces is their place in the Church. Does the Church still care about me even though I am divorced? Am I allowed to go to Mass? Can I receive communion? How can the Church help me heal? If I decide to marry again, what do I have to do? The Tribunal of the Diocese of Cleveland is continuing to offer its very successful First Step Program in order to help individuals deal with these questions. The Church s teachings on marriage, divorce, and remarriage are often misunderstood. This program is offered to help everyone, especially those who have experienced divorce, learn more about Catholic teaching in these areas. Representatives from the Ministry to the Divorced Office of the Department for Marriage and Family Ministry will also be present to explain their ministry to those who are divorced. Everyone is welcome to: Deepen their knowledge of the Church s teaching on marriage Learn about the Church s ministry to the divorced/ separated in the Diocese Hear the true facts about the annulment process and how to submit a case Discover a path to healing after divorce. In any endeavor, taking the first step is always the most difficult. The First Step Program helps individuals to navigate the path of healing and closure, of which the annulment process is an important aspect. Please refer to the Tribunal website ( for testimonials about the program from past participants. The schedule for the general meetings in 2014 is: Thursday, 15 May 2014, at St. John Vianney Parish, Mentor, at 7:00 pm Tuesday, 23 September 2014, at St. Ambrose Parish, Brunswick, at 7:00 pm Tuesday, 14 October 2014, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Cuyahoga Falls, at 7:00 pm We encourage everyone to. Come to heal Come to learn Come open to the spirit For more information check our website: Or call the Tribunal: / , ext
4 Fourth of Easter Parish School of Religion MAY CROWNING AND ROSARY The PSR children did an outstanding presentation of praying the Rosary as the Mary Choir sang beautifully for this annual May event. Thank you to our families who encouraged and took the time to continue this wonderful tradition in honor of our Blessed Mother. SPIRIT CONFIRMATION interviews will be taking place in May, June, July and August. Please call the Religious Education Office if you do not yet have a day and time. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL VBS registrations are now coming in. NOW we need the parents of the campers to join us in ministry for that week. Please sign-up for the area of your choice as we will not be able to go forward with VBS unless we have enough adult participation. Currently, we are in need of two adults per age group, as well as adults in crafts, snacks, and registration. We will consider creative ways of scheduling adults to make this a fun, engaging experience for busy parents. Please contact the PSR office to let them know that you can help. ASP Appalachia Service Project group will meet on, May 18th, at 10:30 at the Schwarz home for Tool Time SPIRIT AND PSR Registration materials have been mailed this past week.
