2 First of Lent Parish News Let's Get Together - March 12th Diocesan Wide Sacrament of Reconciliation Let us look on Jesus who suffered to save us and rose again for our justification. (Isaiah 53:4-6) The sacrament of reconciliation offers to us the healing grace of God in restored relationships: not only our individual relationships with friends and family, but our relationship with God and with the Catholic Church. All are asked to join us for an Evening of Confession, March 12 from 5 8 pm. We particularly invite anyone who may have wandered from the Catholic Church to come home this Lent, through the sacramental reconcilia t i o n. F o r m o r e i n f o r m a t i o n s e e Join in an evening that will inspire and challenge at River s Edge in Cleveland. Spiritual director, Carol Creek, will present Stories from the Heart: A Lenten Reflection on Wednesday March 26 th. Registration is at 6:30 with presentation from 7:00-8:30. Members of Holy Martyrs Women s Spirituality Team plan to carpool from Holy Martyrs front lot at 6:00 p.m. Join us at church or meet us at River s Edge! Lenten Opportunities this Week at Holy Martyrs Celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation: Wednesday, March 12 from 5:00-8:00 pm Taizé Prayer Service & Labyrinth: Friday, March 14, at 7:00 pm Lenten Soup Supper: Saturday, March 15 after 5:30 Mass Parish Read-A-Thon - This Lent, we are making copies of Matthew Kelly s The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic available to members of our parish. This book promises to take you on a journey that will help you to live out the genius of Catholicism in your everyday life. Journeying Through Lent The following are traditional Lenten disciplines: Fasting & Abstinence: Catholics of age 14 and older abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. In addition, on Ash Wednesday and Good Fridays, Catholics from age fast, limit themselves to one full meal and two smaller meals each day. Prayer: Catholics are encouraged to pray more during Lent, especially with Scripture. Lent is also an ideal time to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation in preparation for the celebration of Christ s Passion, Death and Resurrection. Almsgiving: Moved by the sacrifice of Christ, many Christians combine almsgiving with fasting, giving to the poor the money they saved by eating, drinking, or buying less as they rely more upon God s abundant grace. Lent is a special time in our liturgical year and we would like to encourage all parishioners to enter into this sacred time with a sense of prayerfulness. To keep this time as sacred, all parish committees and groups might want to consider minimizing business meetings as much as possible to keep the focus and energy on our Lenten opportunities.

Hope Tote Campaign - The Holy Martyrs Mens Group will once again be joining the Haven of Rest s special Lenten/Easter outreach ministry to needy and homeless men, women and children in our communities. We will be passing out Totes after each Mass this weekend (Mar. 8 & 9). [If we have extra Totes they will also be available after Mass next weekend.] You can help the needy and homeless by collecting the following new, regular or large size items for Hope Totes from now until Friday, April 4, 2014: Toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap, shaving cream and disposable razors, shampoo and conditioner, deodorant, lip balm, socks brush and comb, shoelaces, hand or body lotion, facial tissues ATTENTION! Bereavement Ministry of the Cluster Parishes of St. Martin of Tours, St. Francis Xavier and Holy Martyrs. The Bereavement Class meeting at St. Martin of Tours will now be meeting on Wednesday afternoons from 1:00-2:30 p.m. It will be held starting March 5th and continuing for 13 weeks.
