Black History Month Communion Offering; 30 Hour Famine & Heart Havens 14 To the People Called United Methodists: Grace and peace to you as we embrace the New Year. The joy of Christmas and the gift of Emmanuel God with us gives us the confidence to face the future with hope. This hope is born of our faith in the Living God. Thus, as we enter the New Year we affirm that God who started a good thing in us will see it to fruition. As United Methodists, we are at a precipitous moment, uncertain about our denomination s future. Yet, we do know that we have been raised up as a people to share in God s mission by spreading scriptural holiness across the globe. And, we know that God knows what form this mission will take in the future. As a Council of Bishops, we have been in unceasing prayer, asking God to open our hearts and minds to discern what God would have us do to lead our global movement. We thank you for your earnest prayers and invite you to continue to pray for the Commission on a Way Forward and the Council as our work continues and we prepare for the 2019 Special Session of the General Conference. Likewise, every part of the world where our United Methodist Connection is present is in the throes of dramatic upheaval, conflict, poverty, migrations or natural disasters. As we enter 2018, let us resolve to be tireless in our efforts to bring health, healing, recovery and transformation to a broken world. Let us be unflagging in our commission to reach new people with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Let us be fully available to grow in our love of God and neighbor. Let us renew our commitment to always and everywhere practice our Rule of Life do no harm, do good, attend to the ordinances of God. The New Year is a time for renewing the covenant. John Wesley clearly understood that covenant cannot be manufactured or Continued next page Scripture Readings for February February 4 Mark 1:29-39 February 18 Mark 1: Corinthians 9: Peter 3:18-32 February 11 Mark 9:2-9 February 25: Mark 8: Corinthians 4:3-6 Romans 4:13-25

He knew that covenantmaking and covenant-keeping were spiritual matters a function of offering one s life to God and to God s purposes above all else. The first celebration of the Covenant Service in the Methodist movement was held on Monday, August 11, In short order, covenant renewal services were being held on New Year s Day in class meetings and societies of the Methodist revival movement. Many United Methodist churches utilize this service in their own Watch Night or New Year s Day worship. Many United Methodists can recite all or portions of Wesley s invitation to his Covenant Service as deftly as they can recite the Lord s Prayer, the Apostle s Creed or Psalm 23. The words are powerful and provocative. I believe they may hold the key to our seeking a way forward. They invite a measure of humility, integrity, denial and surrender that is often discomforting and disorienting to our pre-conceived, siloed positions. They clearly remind us that we belong to Christ, and that to give ourselves to Christ in all things is the heart and soul of all covenantal relationships within our great United Methodist Church. So, as we enter into 2018 and trust that God will provide a future with hope, I invite all United Methodist s to renew our covenant with God and one another, as we join Methodist people throughout the ages in praying the Covenant Prayer, which in part reads: Lord, make me what you will put myself fully into your hands; put me to doing, put me to suffering, let me be employed for you, or laid aside for you, let me be full, let me be empty, let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and with willing heart give it all to your pleasure and disposal. Amen. May God add God s blessing to our journey together as a covenant people and grant us a blessed New Year. 3 P A G E 3 Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper Don t forget to join us on : Tuesday, February 13th from 6pm-8pm for a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. The BUMMs (Men s group) will be fixing the meal, and we all know breakfast food is their specialty. This is a traditional meal that represents the last day before the season of Lent starts, on Ash Wednesday, February 14th. There will be other breakfast food besides just pancakes served. There is no cost, but donations will be accepted, to help offset the cost of the meal. Join Us for Ash Wednesday Service Wednesday, February 14th at 7:00pm Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent. Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. Ash Wednesday emphasizes two themes: our sinfulness before God, and our human mortality. The service focuses on both themes, helping us to realize that both have been triumphed through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. During Ash Wednesday services, the minister will lightly rub the sign of the cross with ashes onto the foreheads of worshipers. The use of ashes as a sign of mortality and repentance has a long history in Jewish and Christian worship. Historically, ashes signified purification and sorrow for sins.

If you d like to be on the distribution, please Rob at robin.williamsx@gmail.com. We finished another successful Christmas Tree selling season to fund out charitable activities for the year and now we just need some BUMMs to come out and help. The usual suspects are quite fantastic but idle hands are the devil s workshop (Proverbs 16:27-29) so quit being idle and come out and help. We can always use a hand with the weekly Sunday breakfast and we gather together at 7:30 am to start preparing. This year we ll be supporting a number of other activities like the homeless shelter dinner, Faith Weaver s Dinner, a Dinner and a Movie activity, Shrove Tuesday, and many others. You can help make them successful! Speaking of Shrove Tuesday, it s coming early this year (Tuesday, February 13)! As always, the BUMMs will be serving pancakes and sausage from 6-8 PM so don t cook and come out to be part of the activities. It s your opportunity to get ready for the activities. It s been cold but that only lasts for so long which means Spring and Softball is coming around. We have the fee covered but could use a few more players. Most of the players are mature and it s a coed team, so all are welcome to come out and play. A little exercise, a lot of fellowship, what else can you want for? B E T H E L B E L L

7 P A G E 7 Friday February 9 th - Saturday February 10 th World Vision s 30 Hour Famine gives students a chance to help overcome hunger by going without food so others don t have to. It s an unforgettable experience that will rock their world and make an incredible difference around the globe! Youth from different churches gather together to raise money and awareness for starving kids around the world. For the first time Bethel is hosting the event. The Famine gives the youth a chance to do something about this unacceptable tragedy to stand together and serve the hungry in Jesus name. The group can give real and lasting hope to families living in poverty by doing the Famine. During the process, they ll draw closer to God and each other. Through the Famine, students learn about real-world issues of poverty and injustice, and they get the chance to make a real difference for hungry children. Plus, their own lives are transformed as they experience hunger firsthand going without food so others don t have to. We begin by raising money for the event. Half of Bethel s February Communion Offering will be going to World Vision. We partner with World Vision to use the money we raise to help feed and care for children all over the world. World Vision has been fighting hunger and poverty for over 60 years. Additionally, each participating youth is encouraged to raise at least $40. Every $40 they raise will help feed and care for a child for a month. World Vision puts the funds raised to work by bringing emergency food aid to disaster zones and equipping families with the tools they need to overcome hunger in their communities. With your help, we re partnering with the poor and empowering them to change the direction of their lives. What does this change look like? Parents equipped to grow healthier, more abundant crops and livestock. Communities gain access to clean water for nutritious harvests. Children receive basic medical care. Kids go to school. Families get on their feet and stand strong. Next we next stop eating on Friday, February 9 th at noon, or after lunch. We then spend the next 24 hours together. On Friday night about 60 youth, from five different churches, will assemble here. We will have games, activity stations where we can learn more about poverty, and time for fellowship. We will be staying the night in the Fellowship Hall and classrooms. Saturday morning wake up will be around 9am. We then get ready to do a food drive for ACTS and other service projects during the day. You can help by donating canned goods before February 9 th. At 5 pm we will have a closing service, and end the fast by sharing communion. The congregation is invited to join us on Saturday, February 10 th, at 5pm, for the Closing Service and Communion. The Praise Band will be there also. Some of the youth participants will give a short summary of their experiences over the weekend. If you cannot join us for the closing ceremony, please pray during the weekend for the youth, volunteers, and the starving kids around the world. Thank you. Terese Smith

10 P A G E 10 Hello from your Finance Committee! Finance Committee We have $ome good new$ to $hare with you about the finance$ at Bethel...thanks to your generous offerings and tithing, we were able to pay our 2017 Apportionments in full, set aside $10,000 into the church's savings account AND have a good starting balance in the checking account for this year. That makes 2 years in a row we have been financially able to accomplish that!! We are praying that, with your help, we can accomplish the same or do even better this year. Donation statements for 2017 will be ready early in February. An announcement will be made when they are ready for pick up at the church. I will have them available in between services in the narthex, for two weeks, and then will mail the ones that don't get picked up. Hopefully, if all goes as planned, the donation envelopes will be here at the same time, so we can distribute them to you together. We are also planning to distribute the directions for our added new way of making your "general church fund" donations, online giving, for those interested in making their "general fund" donations electronically. If you want to specify that your donation goes to something other than the general church fund, for example Rise Against Hunger or other mission projects, you will need to do that in the usual ways. Now you have several free options for giving: through the offering plate during services, drop it off in the church office during the week (9-3), set up automatic payments with your bank then they send us a check, mailing checks yourself, or online giving. Watch for more information to come... As always, if you have any questions/concerns, please feel free to contact me in person, call/text or by kjohnston@bethelumc.org Ble$$ings, Karen B E T H E L B E L L

11 Bethel is on a Mission... P A G E 11 Bethel is on a mission...in the month of January, Bethel definitely loved our neighbors! Looks like that won't stop in February, or beyond! We had our week at the Hilda Barg Homeless Shelter providing wonderful meals and sharing God's love with the residents and staff. Your donations and support are greatly appreciated! If you weren't able to participate this time, you will get another chance the week of July 15th. Can't go without thanking Audrey Lewis for her many years of leading this outreach project! She has it down pat!! We collected items and donations for Diane Nothnagel s mission trip to Haiti. Her continued support as Bethel's liaison with Grace UMC, as well as her travels to the same village in Haiti for several years, has made a tremendous impact on their children and community. This year, we sent some toothbrushes, toothpaste, soaps, small blackboards/chalk, candles, fabric/sewing supplies, and other VBS supplies. Diane also took half of the January Communion offering, and other donations received, to purchase items once she gets there. She can only carry so many bags with her! In addition, this year, we received donations to sponsor the education of 3 children for a year each. This pays for their tuition, uniforms, backpacks, school supplies, teacher compensation, and a meal each day they are at school. What a blessing! Thanks to all who contributed to this wonderful project in any way...and SPECIAL thanks to Diane for representing Bethel, bringing joy and spreading God's love to the children/people there! Thank you to the ladies of our UMW for generously providing/serving the meal, for all the participants and their families, after FaithWeaver Friends on January 28th. Thank you to our Jr/Sr youth group and other volunteers for stepping up and helping the younger kids of Bethel, and our community, have fun learning about and experiencing God's love. Many plans were made during the past few months, in order to support Bethel hosting the 30 Hour Famine, for the first time, on Feb Huge thanks to Terese and Jim Smith who have been leading this project for us, along with coordinating with the representatives from the other churches coming to stay/ participate. Please see Terese's article in this newsletter for more information about the upcoming event. Our food pantry has been seeing alot of activity, especially during these cold months. If you would like to contribute, to help those local families in need of food, please prayerfully consider donating items like: canned meats (tuna, chicken, ham, salmon); cereal; canned meals like spaghettios/ravioli etc for kids; mac and cheese; milk substitutes; pasta sauce; pasta; soups (like meat and veggies); and whatever other non-perishable food items you would like to contribute would be greatly appreciated. February's Communion offering is being split in half between the 30 Hour Famine/World Vision AND Heart Havens (a local organization that helps adults with intellectual disabilities)...but if your heart desires, you can also designate which you'd like to support by noting it on your donation envelopes. Mark your calendars: ~ February 13th at 6-8 pm we will be enjoying pancakes that our wonderful BUMMs prepare for Shrove Tuesday. ~ Wednesday, Feb 14th, will be the Ash Wed Service from 7-8 pm. ~ Sunday, Feb 18th, you will receive your Lenten "boxes" and "eggs". The "Lenten box offerings" will be going to the kid programs in our church (Jr/Sr Youth activities and the FaithWeaver Friends program, which is geared to the elementary school age kids). The "eggs" will be going to raise funds for the Heifer Project again this year. Last year we raised $500, giving goats/chicks/bunnies/bees to help several families. We are hoping to increase that and be able to give more animals to more families this year. Contribute to the boxes and eggs during Lent, and then bring them back on Easter Sunday to make your donations. If you won't be at church on Easter, you can give them to me directly and I will make sure they get put into the offering on Easter. Please be sure to put your names on or inside of your boxes/eggs if you would like to receive credit for the donation on your 2018 donation statements. Collecting pop tabs is an ongoing project, so keep them coming! Collection bin is on cabinet, just inside the Fellowship Hall. Countless lives, locally and around the world, have been touched by Bethel...thank you for continually showing and sharing God's love, Karen Johnston

12 P A G E 12 A Note from the Lay Leader As Bethel s new Lay Leader, I would like to give a huge shout out to Brian Lewis, who is stepping down after too many years to count, as your Lay Leader. I personally would like to thank Brian for representing us, the Laity, in such a dedicated way, on Bethel s various committees and council, and I hope to continue Brian s legacy as we grow our church in God s unity, peace and love, with a shared vision in Christ for our future. Brian also was astute in identifying and supporting many individuals who were ready to move out of their comfort zones, and take the next steps in their spiritual growth. One he strongly supported was sponsorship in the Emmaus Walk with Jesus, catapulting many of us (myself included, FE-50) beyond our sin into ministry areas using our own spiritual gifts. I pray that I too, as your new Lay Leader, can assist you as you continue to take advantage of the many opportunities available to us for continued growth in Christ. One of the things that come to mind as I assume this position, is our partnership in ministry. In 1Corinthians 12:13, the apostle Paul makes a connection between the Holy Spirit and baptism as a sign of entrance into ministry of the whole body. The Holy Spirit empowers us to give our life away in service to Christ. That means that none of us can sit back and coast or let someone else minister on our behalf. From an article by Darlene Amon, titled Partners in Ministry, I quote: Each believer has God-given abilities to strengthen the whole body, and ministry is what God does through the entire body...together as partners... It may take some transformation to discover our God-given gifts, but this is when we catch the vision that ministry belongs to us all. Darlene Amon served as Virginia Annual Conference Lay Leader, So I appeal to you that we cannot become what we need to be in Christ by remaining where we are. As partners, we are in the business of transformation. We need Spiritual Leadership that calls for all to always seek win/win solutions, to keep agreements, and to assume full responsibility for our own growth, as well as others. In this edition of the Bethel Bell, as well as posted in the Narthex, are some opportunities for us all to take advantage of in areas for spiritual growth. I pray you will consider each as helpful to you and to your ministries. Let s not just be, Jesus Fans, but let s be Jesus Followers, as well. God Bless! Diana Davidson B E T H E L B E L L
