However, our church needs new flat roofs and we are beginning to think of creative ways we can raise the money needed for these roofs. We need to raise a lot of money for these roofs. I plan to initiate a Shave It or Save It fundraiser for the roof fund. Here s how it will work. Beginning Sunday, March 3, and continuing through March 24, there will be two jars in the Narthex. One will be labeled Shave It and the other Save It. People vote by putting money in the appropriate jar. Each day the money will be removed from the jars and a running tally will appear in the weekly bulletins. On Sunday, March 31, the final totals will be announced and results viewed. 1: If we collect more money in the Save It jar, I will refrain from shaving through April 14. 2 P A G E 2 A Word from the Pastor cont. 2: If we collect more money in the Shave It jar, I will shave on March 30 according to the following schedule: Up to $499 raised I will shave my beard/goatee (keeping the mustache). $500 to $999 raised I will shave my beard/goatee and my mustache! Please understand that I haven t shaved my mustache since 1984! $1,000 to $9,999 raised I will shave my beard/goatee, mustache, and hair (yes, I am talking bald here). Over $10,000 raised I will shave my entire head including my eyebrows! May the Lord have mercy on our souls. Pastor Joe Shoop Be a Summer Intern Project Transformation is looking for college age young adults seeking a summer of hands-on ministry with under-served children and youth in our nation s capital. The dates for this service experience are June 8th-August 10th, This includes one week of pre-program training and eight weeks of day camp. Interns earn a living stipend of $2000 plus room and board. They will work in teams to coordinate programs for children and youth in low- income communities. Interns live in a Christian community with other interns who share a passion for ministry and service. They will take weekly trips to explore different forms of ministry, both within, and outside of the church. Most form lasting relationships with the children, families, and other interns. 3 Shrove Tuesday Shrove Pancake Tuesday Supper Don t forget to join us on : Tuesday, March 5th from 6pm-8pm for a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. The BUMMs (Men s group) will be fixing the meal, and breakfast food is their specialty. There will be other breakfast food besides just pancakes served. There is no cost, but donations will be accepted, to help offset the cost of the meal. The day before Ash Wednesday is Shrove Tuesday, sometimes called Fat Tuesday. Centuries ago Christians often stuffed themselves with food before beginning 40 days of fasting for Lent. In those days, many Christians used up all the food containing fat, including dairy products. Because so many foods, including pancakes, used those fat products, many churches had huge feasts. A lot of people ate until they could hold no more the beginnings of all-you-can eat dinners! Today many congregations still keep at least a semblance of the tradition. In communities around the world, churches serve pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. However, today, the purpose is to have Christian fellowship, not to devour everything in sight. P A G E 3 Join Us for Ash Wednesday Service Wednesday, March 6th at 7:00pm On the first day of Lent, pastors in many churches dip a finger in ashes (often made by burning palm branches from the previous year s Palm Sunday) and make a cross on parishioners foreheads. God s people have used ashes as a sign of mourning, humbleness, and penitence. In the Old Testament, ashes were used as a purification offering. The New Testament speaks of repenting in sackcloth and ashes (Luke 10:13, NRSV). On Ash Wednesday, Christians are pained because our sins private and public led to Jesus death. With repentant hearts, we begin the season of Lent, knowing it leads to resurrection on Easter Sunday.
P A G E 4 Bethel Book Club Bethel book club met on Feb 19th, with eight ladies present. We had a little farewell party for Joyce Byers, who will be moving to Louisiana this week. We will miss her, and Don, but wish them well. We all enjoyed the book "Stella Bain" and had a lively discussion. The next book is "Defending Jacob" by William Landay. We will meet at Wegman s on March 26th, at 7:00pm for fellowship and discussion. Fasting is more about replacing than it is about abstaining replacing normal activities with focused times of prayer and feeding on the Word of God. 5 PAGE St. Patrick's Life Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. He was a Christian missionary credited with converting Ireland to Christianity in the AD 400s. So many legends surround his life, that the truth is not easily found. St Patrick was not actually Irish. His exact birthplace and date is not known. However it is believed he was born around 375AD in Scotland. His parents Calpurnius and Conchessa, were Romans living in Britain in charge of the colonies. His real name is believed to be Maewyn Succat, and he took on the name Patrick upon becoming a priest. As a teen he was kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland to herd and tend sheep on Slemish mountain, County Antrim. During his six-year captivity, he became fluent in the Irish language, and he turned to God in prayer. He escaped after having a dream sent from God in which he was told to leave Ireland by going to the coast where he would find a ship waiting to sail to Britain. He is believed to have met up with his parents in Wales before travelling to France where he became a priest and later a bishop. Patrick was sent another dream in which the people of Ireland were calling out to him to come and walk among them once more. He was set the task of teaching Christianity to the Irish. He travelled throughout Ireland, preaching the Gospel and converting many. He and his disciples preached and converted thousands and began building churches all over the country. Patrick preached and converted all over Ireland for 40 years. The date cited for when Ireland was converted to Christianity is 432. There is much debate over when and where he died. It is believed he died on 17 March, 460 at Saul, Downpatrick. That is why Saint Patrick's day is celebrated on March 17th. Some people suggest he was also born on 17 March. The clans of Ireland began to bicker over who should receive the honor of having his final resting-place on their land. To avoid this sacrilegious end to his life his friends secreted away his body to bury in a secret grave. Many believe this to be in Downpatrick, County Down, where there is a permanent memorial. 5
P A G E 6 by Rev. Arthur Lichtenberg Fast from judging others; feast on Christ living in them Fast from words that pollute; feast on phrases that purify. Fast from discontent, feast on gratitude. Fast from anger; feast on patience. Fast from pessimism; feast on optimism. Fast from worry; feast on appreciation. Fast from complaining; feast on appreciation. Fast from unrelenting pressures; feast on unceasing prayer. Fast from bitterness; feast on forgiveness. Fast from self-concern; feast on compassion for others. Fast from personal anxiety; feast on eternal hope through Jesus. Fast from discouragement; feast on hope. Fast from thoughts of weakness; feast on promises that inspire. Fast from everything that separates you from the Lord; feast on everything that draws you to the Lord. REFLECTIONS Solitude is one of the deepest disciplines of the spiritual life because it crucifies our need for importance and prominence. Everyone-including ourselves at first will see our solitude as a waste of good time. We are removed from "where the action is." That, of course, is exactly what we need. In silence and solitude God slowly but surely frees us from our egomania. In time we come to see that the really important action occurs in solitude. Once we have experienced God at work in the soul, all the blare and attention of the world seem like a distant and fragmentary echo. Only then are we able to enter the hustle and bustle of today s machine civilization with perspective and freedom. RICHARD J. 9 P A G E 9 On Fasting The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6, Holy Saturday (April 20, 2019) is the last day of Lent. Lent is the season of preparation for celebrating Jesus resurrection. It is a time of penance and soul searching for Christians to grow spiritually, and discover God s will. The Spiritual Discipline of Fasting is traditionally encouraged during Lent. I am asking you all to join me in fasting and prayer from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday. Fasting can take many forms besides simply not eating or drinking. We can fast by giving up a particular food item like alcohol, sweets, red meat, or caffeine. The idea is to fast by giving up something like a meal, or favorite TV show, and spend that time in prayer. You could give up a favorite treat, and pray every time you think about your treat. You could give up a meal each week, or a meal each day. The agreement is between you and God. I would also like to challenge the congregation to fast by giving up one hour every day to devote toward Bible reading, meditation, and prayer. Fasting, if done properly, is good for the mind, body, and soul. It is good for the mind because it builds self discipline when we give up something that we desire. It is good for the body when we give up something that is not good for us. It is good for the soul because it puts us in a place where God can grow us in Spirit. God transforms us through fasting and prayer. Fasting goes hand in hand with prayer, and I know that I have grown spiritually through fasting and prayer. Jesus fasted at a time of spiritual crisis (see Matthew 4:2, and Mark 1:13), and we are in a time of spiritual crisis. The turmoil in our denomination, and the conditions of our world, our nation, our community and our families, can be very disturbing. The good news is that Jesus changes lives. Pray for God to intervene on behalf of all people of good will. Please join me in practicing the Spiritual Discipline of fasting from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday. We can make a difference in our world today through our faith in Jesus. Want to change the world? Start by changing yourself. Give an hour every day to God, and experience God s glory. 10 P A G E 10 Bethel is on a Mission So, the 30 Hour Famine, that the youth participated in last month, was a wonderful and inspiring event!! Our youth, and some of the Bethel leaders, along with youth and leaders from 3 other local churches, went without food for 30 hours. During their fast they did several community service projects for those in our local community. 760 pounds of nonperishable food was collected by participants! Some of the food went into our food pantry, but the majority of it went to ACTS. They were VERY appreciative when I rolled in with a vehicle FULL of food, and then really couldn't believe it when I told them the kids collected all that in 2 hours. It took another couple of hours to sort all that food, but, those hours were GREATLY appreciated by the staff at ACTS. It made them even happier that it was already sorted! Some physical work got done at the ACTS warehouse. Stops were made at local firehouses with gifts of goodies, words of thanks, encouragement, and Jenga games as random acts of kindness to others in our community. Residents of the various local senior homes were happy to have visitors come to chat and play bingo too! Can't say enough thankyous to Terese Smith!! You were a WONDERFUL, fearless leader for us!! I thoroughly enjoyed coordinating the community service piece of this project, and being a part of such a giving & kind group of people that all shared God s love with each other, as well as our neighbors! God was in the house!! Thank you, Harry Burket, Jordan Johnston, Judy LaPorte, Tonia & Chris Parker, Jim Smith, Steve & Jessica Stoops, Joe Swetnam, Pastor Joe & Debra for all your contributions to that weekend as well! Rise Against Hunger is being planned. We are continually raising funds for our next packaging event. In fact, the Communion Offering for March is designated to go towards our fundraising goal for our next Rise Against Hunger event. To date, we have packaged 86,248 meals. Hopefully, this year, we will surpass that initial goal of 100,000 meals. Hoping to hold our next event in September. More info to come on that. Lent is upon us. Ash Wednesday is March 6th! The eggs that the children will get during Lent, will be going to the Heifer project again this year. We will be talking to the kids about this project, and giving out the eggs-with explanation notes inside them, on Sunday, March 10th. Last year, the eggs collected enough funds ($537.60) for the kids to vote upon and give: a flock of geese, a flock of chicks, 2 flocks of ducks, a trio of rabbits, 2 gifts of honeybees, a flock of hope, the gift of a llama, and the gift of a pig to help many families. The Lenten boxes will also be given out to the members of the church, that Sunday as well, to collect donations throughout Lent. The funds received in the Lenten boxes this year, will be going towards Bethel's VBS (which will be held the week of July 21st). Please return all eggs and boxes on Easter Sunday. If you won't be at church that day, you can give them to me, and I will make sure the funds get to the right program. B E T H E L B E L L
P A G E 11 MANY thanks for your generous, giving hearts!! We were able to fully support Meredith Oakes' upcoming mission trip. We had enough to sponsor another cadet to attend the trip, as well as contribute funds to Meredith's mentoring program fundraiser! Funding for "Education Scholarships" for children in Haiti have been received. But, it's not too late. If you'd like to make a donation, please see Karen, Diane, or use your donation envelopes, and mark them for "Haiti Education Scholarships". Unfortunately, Diane's mission trip (that was supposed to take place Feb 26-March 7) has been put on hold due to conditions in Haiti. Once things settle down, she will let us know when her trip gets rescheduled. Diane is holding onto the chalk, chalkboards, and eraser donations that you all made. I am holding onto the funds for her trip in our mission outreach funds, until the new date is set. In the mean time, we have been working with Grace UMC, and they ensure us that the scholarships funds will get to the proper place for the children. On February 21st we hosted the Lord's Table Dinner at St. Paul. We had a record number of attendees. Bethel fed 59 people in less than an hour! Maybe they heard we were going to be there, because, we definitely know how to do food right around here! Following the dinner, our Praise Band joined us to play a wonderful set of music for all to enjoy, before Pastor Joe gave his devotional. What a blessed evening! You all are making such a difference at Bethel, in Woodbridge, in Prince William County, in Virginia, and beyond. With prayers of thanksgiving, Karen Our faithful Servers The Praise Band
P A G E 12 Bethel UMW Hello ladies!! Can t start this without another "THANK YOU!" to all those that donated funds, ingredients, their time, and bought soup or food at the Vendor Blender. The UMW made just over $1,000 for various mission, and other church related, projects for the coming year. If you missed buying soup, there are a few pints left in the church freezer. See Karen, if you are interested. Our next bible study has had some weather-related obstacles in getting started, but we finally kicked it off on Feb 27th with a movie night. Will be meeting most Wednesdays until April 10th (no meeting on 3/6, due to Ash Wed service, or on 3/20, due to Emmaus responsibilities). We bring our dinners and enjoy fellowship from 6-6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall, and then begin our bible study 6:30. Hope to see you there. Ladies that have helped support the FaithWeaver dinners, the Homeless shelter week, and helped with the memorial for Bob Vincent...THANK YOU!!! You know who you are, and we know you are awesome!! Mark your calendars: May 4th will be our Red Carpet Tea Party at 2 p.m. Tickets will be $10 per ticket, or $75 for a table of 8 (ages 3 and up) There is no cost for 2 and under. If tea is not your cup of tea (sorry had to), other drinks and goodies are also served, so come join the fun. If you have never been, you should come check it out. A good time is had by all ages!! May 18th, the UMW will be supporting a Raise the Roof yard sale for the church s new roof fund. We will need donations of items to sell. You can begin bringing them to the church starting May 5th. We also need hangers for clothing; worker bees to set up on Friday, (from noon until we are ready to go), worker bees on Saturday during the sale (7-2), and then more worker bees to help with clean up. Next meeting is on March 18th at 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. See you there. Wishing continued blessings for you all, UMW Officers (Sheri, Tonia, Judy, and Karen B E T H E L B E L L
What Just Happened? P A G E 13 An overview of the results from the Special Called General Conference of 2019 Over 800 United Methodists from all over the world met in St. Louis, MO to discuss and vote on 78 petitions relating to the United Methodist Church s stance on marriage, same sex unions, and the ordination of gay and lesbian persons as clergy. The current stance is that a marriage is between one man and one woman, no same sex unions are to be performed in United Methodist churches, United Methodist clergy are prohibited from officiating at same sex unions, and self-avowed practicing homosexual persons are not to be ordained as clergy. The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church states that the homosexual lifestyle is incompatible with the Christian lifestyle. At the end of the General Conference, 20 of the 78 petitions passed by majority vote. The Progressive petitions to reverse the United Methodist Church s current stance failed to receive a majority vote. The Traditionalist plan to keep the current stance, tighten up the definition of a homosexual person, and enhance accountability, passed by majority vote. Unfortunately, 10 of the 17 petitions within the Traditional plan are not constitutional. You can read the constitution of the United Methodist Church in the Book of Discipline. Efforts to amend petitions within the Traditional Plan to make it constitutional, were blocked by progressives who used filibuster techniques to stall and obstruct the work of the General Conference until the clock ran out. When the Judicial Council meets in April, they will most likely overthrow the Traditional Plan decision because it is not constitutional. This will leave the United Methodist church right where we were before the General Conference. Three other petitions passed by majority vote. Two of these related to clergy pensions, and one related to disaffiliation, paving the way for clergy and churches to leave the denomination if they feel they can no longer serve under the current structures. I watched the General Conference proceedings live stream. It broke my heart watching delegates so sure of their position, that they couldn't listen to the words of people who believe otherwise. It broke my heart to watch delegates use histrionics to make their point when sound reason failed. It broke my heart to watch people imply that the words of Jesus Christ were absurd. It broke my heart watching my broken denomination resorting to parliamentary footwork to undermine the will of the majority. No one "won the day" at General Conference. Everyone lost. At the end of the day, the world saw that our denomination is broken. The tension between the traditionalists and the progressives is keeping both sides from making disciples for Jesus Christ. It is past the breaking point. I used to be a centrist. General Conference polarized the United Methodist church so that there is no centrist position anymore. I am a traditionalist, and my heart is broken. Pastor Joe Shoop
P A G E 14 A Survey of UMC Laity The following article contains excerpts from a Good News article titled Are Traditionalists Only a Small Group Within the Denomination? by Thomas Lambrecht. A recent survey by United Methodist Communications has found that rank and file laity in the American church self-identify as 44 percent conservative-traditional, 28 percent moderate-centrist, and 20 percent progressive-liberal. (It found 8 percent were unsure.) Furthermore, although moderates tended to fall between traditionalists and progressives in their answers, they were often closer to the conservative position. "I don't think you can add the moderates and progressives and say that's where the church is," said Chuck Niedringhaus, who oversees research for UMCom. "Theologically, many (moderates) are more traditional." the church. According to the survey, conservative-traditional members are more active in 57% of conservatives claim to attend church at least 2-3 times per month, 44% of moderates claim to attend church at least 2-3 times per month, 39% of progressives claim to attend church at least 2-3 times per month. The survey points out how wide the theological gap is between traditionalists and progressives. For conservatives, the top two sources for their personal theology are Scripture (41 percent) and Christian Tradition (30 percent). For progressives, the top two sources are Reason (39 percent) and Personal Experience (33 percent). (Only six percent of progressives view Scripture as their most authoritative source.) In the secular world, there is a perception that conservatives get their news and information from Fox News, while liberals get theirs from CNN. Having different sources leads to divergent opinions and even worldviews. Similarly, traditionalists and progressives in our denomination derive their personal theology from mutually exclusive sources. This is bound to create highly divergent theological perspectives, and it is probably one reason why the two groups often seem to talk past each other. They are using some of the same words, but with totally different meanings and contextual understandings. The survey also seems to bear out the contention of evangelicals that the disagreements in our church are over the authority of Scripture. When progressives name Scripture as the least authoritative source for their personal theology, named by only six percent, that is a stance that evangelicals are not able to understand or support. B E T H E L B E L L
P A G E 15 This theological gap has practical consequences in the life of the church. What should be the primary focus of The United Methodist Church? 88% of conservatives said "saving souls for Jesus Christ." 32% of progressives said, "saving souls for Jesus Christ." Progressives favored "advocating for social justice to transform this world" by 68 percent. For contemporary evangelicals, this is an old and unfortunate dichotomy. Obviously, we believe in preaching the gospel but we are equally compelled to care for the physical needs of our neighbors and work to right injustice. "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in" (Matthew 25:35). From an evangelical perspective, both focuses are essential. Our mission statement is "Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world." Evangelicals, however, tend to emphasize the priority of evangelism and discipleship because it is something only the church can uniquely do. If we do not do this, no one else will. Furthermore, evangelicals believe that the way to transform the world is through personal transformation. Yes, structures need to be transformed and laws changed. But unless the human heart is transformed, sin and injustice will continue and grow, regardless of one's commitment to social justice. We all need Jesus, first and foremost. Given the disconnect in terms of priorities, one can see how the heavy emphasis on advocating for politically liberal agendas for social justice on the part of our general boards and agencies without a corresponding emphasis on evangelism and discipleship can seem irrelevant and at times even offensive to conservatives and traditionalists. They often feel like their tithes and offerings are going toward an agenda that they do not support. This is part of the reason for a reluctance to pay apportionments. It is important to note that these deep theological differences reflect the deep-seated differences between groups in our church that are playing out now in the conflict over human sexuality and marriage. Thomas Lambrecht is a United Methodist clergyperson and the vice president of Good News. He is a member of the Commission on a Way Forward.
