Because of your generosity, I was able to afford a new-to-me car. I am now driving a grey 2008 Prius. Secondly, I want to thank everyone for another wonderful year of partnership in ministry. Our church continues to minister to people in need wherever we see the need. You are all a blessing to me, and to this community. Lastly, I want to remind everyone that our denomination s Called General Conference is this month, February in St Louis, Missouri. General Conference is the top policy-making body of The United Methodist Church (UMC). The purpose of this Called General Conference is to discuss and make a definitive statement regarding The UMC s stance on human sexuality. The three main questions under discussion are: 1: Will the United Methodist Church ordain practicing homosexual persons as clergy, or appoint practicing homosexual persons to serve as pastors in local churches? 2: Will United Methodist pastors be allowed to perform same sex unions? 3: Will anyone be allowed to perform same sex unions in United Methodist Churches? Continued next page Scripture Readings for February February 3 Luke 4:14-21 February 17 Luke 6: Corinthians 12:12-31(a) 1 Corinthians 15:12-20 February 10 Luke 4:21-30 February 24: Luke 6: Corinthians 12:27-13:13 1 Corinthians 15:35-38

P A G E 2 A Word from the Pastor cont. The United Methodist Church currently prohibits self-avowed practicing homosexual persons from being ordained or serving as pastors, prohibits same sex unions performed in United Methodist churches, and prohibits UMC pastors from officiating over same sex unions. The Discipline of the United Methodist Church states, The homosexual lifestyle is not compatible with a Christian lifestyle. Our more progressive brothers and sisters (particularly those along the west coast) have been in direct violation of the Discipline for more than 16 years by ordaining practicing homosexual persons and performing same sex unions within United Methodist Churches. Traditionalists want them held accountable for going against the denomination s teaching. Progressives want to change the denomination s teaching. Traditionalists see this as an issue of Biblical Authority. Progressives see this as a Social Justice issue. The February 2019 General Conference will hear the report from the Commission on a Way Forward that includes 3 possible plans to solve the problem. They will review and act upon the 78 petitions submitted that deal with human sexuality. Pardon my cynicism, but I do not believe 800 people meeting in a single group under Roberts Rules of Order, can discuss and vote on 78 petitions in 4 days. I will be surprised if they make any meaningful decisions, and expect them to defer major decisions until the regular 2020 General Conference. Do not be alarmed. Whatever the General Conference decides, God will take care of us. Pastor Joe Shoop B E T H E L B E L L

P A G E 5 United Methodists share MLK s dream Photo by Maile Bradfield, United Methodist Communications The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial in Washington was dedicated by President Obama on Oct. 16, The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was the face of the African-American civil rights movement throughout the 1960s until his assassination 50 years ago on April 4, The United Methodist Church recognizes the right of individuals to dissent when acting under the constraint of conscience and, after having exhausted all legal recourse, to resist or disobey laws that they deem to be unjust or that are discriminately enforced. Therefore, many United Methodists joined King in his march toward equality, and in his wake, those United Methodist voices continue to advocate for justice for all, as their faith calls them to. Though King's death was years or even decades before they were born, his vision has influenced countless young people who reflect and give gratitude for how the struggles of previous generationshave benefited them and shaped their lives. People of all ages are grateful for King s leadership and for those United Methodists who walked with him. (This article was copied from the UMC national website. Please see: for more information.)

P A G E 6 Youth Group News The December Youth fundraiser, Parents Night Out was a huge success! We had 15 kids to entertain for the evening. We did games, crafts, dinner, and a movie while their parents got some Christmas shopping done (or just got a break for the evening). The best part was seeing the youth interacting with the kids, and the kids interacting with the youth. It was definitely a win-win night! The youth also had fun with their Christmas Party. They played a candy cane game, a saran wrap ball game, and a game where they unwrapped a wrapped present with oven mitts on! The highlight of the night was the Escape Room that Jamie Long put together for the youth. They may not have figured it out completely, but they had fun attempting to do it, and will surely do better the next time. January 18 th through January 21 st Veronica English, CJ Finnegan, Matthew Oakes, Heather Smith, and Mark Stoops went on their Chrysalis weekend! I strongly encourage you to ask them how they enjoyed the weekend, and watch their faces light up! They are so grateful, and send their thanks for all the prayers and uplifting gestures they received from the congregation. Additionally in Dec.-Jan., the youth had a Bible study night with Kim Payne, helped the BUMMS sell Christmas trees, helped with the de-greening of the church, helped with FaithWeaver Friends, and prepared breakfast for the church! Youth Group Calendar February will be an extremely busy month for the youth. 7 P A G E 7 Friday February 1st - Saturday February 2nd The middle school and high school youth of this church have been attending an event each year called the 30 Hour Famine. It is an event where youth from different churches gather together to raise money and awareness for starving kids around the world. We partner with World Vision to use money raised to feed and care for children all over the world. World Vision has been fighting hunger and poverty for over 60 years, and helps with this event. See their website for more information at We begin by raising money for the event. Half of Bethel s February Communion Offering will be going to World Vision. Additionally, each youth participant is encouraged to raise at least $40. That amount will feed and care for one child for one month. So that we can experience what it is like to be hungry, participants in the event do not eat for 30 hours. This also helps to raise awareness of hunger around the world. A way the congregation can participate is to provide Gatorade bottles, and juice boxes, (but no orange juice) by February 1st. Participants will only be drinking liquids during the event. We stop eating on Friday, February 1st at noon, or after lunch. We then spend the next 24 hours together. On Friday night, about 60 youth from four churches, will have games, activity stations set up to help us learn more about poverty, and time for fellowship. Bethel is hosting the event again this year, so we will be staying the night in the Fellowship Hall and classrooms. Rise and shine will be at 9am on Saturday. We will then get ready to do a food drive for ACTS (the congregation can also help by bringing in non-perishable food items before February 1st). We will have other service projects during the day on Saturday. At 5 pm, we will have a closing service, and end the fast by sharing Communion. We would like to invite the members of the congregation to join us on Saturday, February 2nd, at 5 pm for the Closing Service and Communion. The Praise Band will be providing music, Pastor Joe Shoop will give a short message, and a few of the youth participants will give a brief explanation of how the weekend s experience made an impact on them. If you cannot join us for the closing ceremony, please pray during the weekend for the youth, volunteers, and the starving kids around the world. Thank you, Terese Smith

P A G E 9 United Methodists are invited to: Phase 3 of Praying Our Way Forward encourages all United Methodists to fast weekly and to pray daily: 1. Engage in a weekly Wesleyan 24-hour fast from Thursday after dinner to Friday mid-afternoon. Those who have health situations causing food fasts to be unadvisable might consider fasting from social media, s or another daily activity. 2. Pause and pray for our church s mission and way forward daily for four minutes from 2:23 through 2:26 a.m. or p.m. in their own time zone OR at another time. This is because the Special Session of General Conference will be held February 23 through February 26, Pray using a weekly prayer calendar that will be posted on the UMCPrays.org website through the end of February Bishop Debra Wallace-Padgett, Council of Bishops Life Together chair, says: We believe that the acts of weekly fasting and prayer will help us approach General Conference both individually and corporately in a posture of humility and receptivity to one another and to the leadership of God s Holy Spirit. For more information visit: ABOUT THE UMC PRAYER COMMUNITY AND UMCPRAYS.ORG By invitation of the Council of Bishops, The Upper Room created an online prayer community in hopes of generating a groundswell of prayer for the 2016 General Conference held in Portland, Oregon. As a result, the 60 Days of Prayer book and website was offered as a way to pray with and for the delegates and to pray for God s will and guidance. About 5,000 people joined the prayer community and have faithfully engaged in prayer for the mission of the church. At General Conference, a resolution was passed asking the Council of Bishops to guide the denomination to Find a Way Forward to engage the church in thoughtful, focused conversation on issues related to human sexuality. The Council also named a parallel prayer initiative named Praying our Way Forward. This prayer movement is hosted by UMCPrays.org and is guided by Bishops Debra Wallace-Padgett of North Alabama Conference and retired Bishop Al Gwinn, and supported by The Upper Room.

P A G E 10 Bethel is on a Mission Thank you to ALL those that helped during our week at the Hilda Barg Homeless Shelter! The people there were so very thankful for the delicious meals and the kind fellowship we provided. Mark your calendars, the week of July is our next opportunity to help at the shelter. Thank you to Audrey Lewis for continuing to coordinate this project!! I m praying you all can contribute, in some way, to the youth s big mission project held on Feb. 1-2, the 30 Hour Famine. This project raises funds and awareness about hunger in the world. The participants will go without food for 30 hours and only drink Gatorade, juice, or water. There are some ways you can help: Volunteer to drive during our mission projects, donate Gatorade or juice boxes, donate canned or nonperishable food items for the Bethel and the ACTS food pantries, pray for the participants, adults, and all those families in need, we are trying to help, attend our closing ceremony on Sat. evening (Feb. 2nd). We also we need help with clean up to get the church ready for services on Sunday. Join in and help us help others. For more information about this wonderful outreach project, check out World Vision s website. February 21st is the next time Bethel will be providing a meal for those in need at the Lord s Table, at St Paul UMC. If you would like to help provide food and/or serve the meal, see Carolyn Frey or me for more information. February s Communion offering is being divided in half. Half to World Vision-30 Hour Famine, and the other half to Heart Havens. Heart Havens provides assistance to adults with disabilities in our community. Last, but certainly NOT least, Diane Nothnagel will be taking her week long mission trip to Haiti the end of the February. We would like to send supplies and funds with her, to support the children in the Port-au-Prince community that we have supported for many years. She has asked for donations of chalk, chalkboard erasers, and self adhesive chalkboard contact paper. Also, if you would like to make a monetary donation, we are collecting funds to go towards education scholarships. The scholarships help cover the costs of textbooks, uniforms, school meals, and supplies for a child for a year. All contributions are GREATLY needed by Feb 24th. They will be appreciated beyond measure. Everything we do to support this project directly impacts many lives that have so very little. Thank you Diane for representing Bethel, and for so kindly touching the lives of those children. Don t forget, to help those in our community in need, we are always collecting food for our food pantry. Thank you Judy LaPorte for coordinating our food pantry! Remember we are always collecting pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House Charities. They help keep sick children and their families together, and near the resources they need. The collection bin is just inside the Fellowship Hall. Thank you Ann Callender for being our champion for this project! Prayers of thanks for your giving hearts, Karen Johnston Mission Outreach Chair B E T H E L B E L L
