7 Rev. Dr. David L. Wheeler We are all aware of how polarized our nation and our world has been in these difficult days. Local churches and even entire denominations in the United States have mirrored the red state / blue state divide in our civic culture. Is it possible to have a purple church, where our common commitment to Christ is stronger than any theological or ideological differences we might have? Of course every church of Jesus Christ is red in the sense that we are redeemed by the blood of his cross; that is, his beautiful and perfect life given for us absorbs the guilt and shame of the sin that separates us from God, and leads us into conflict with one another. FBC was characterized by a good bit of conflict in But in 2015, our lay leadership and our pastoral and worship staff worked together in beautiful harmony. There are differences in our church, but we are indeed united by our commitment to Christ, and our shared call to serve him in the complex environment of downtown Portland. A broadly representative task force, chaired by Rev. Steve Bils, who brings special expertise to the task of church governance, presented our congregation revised by-laws, designed to simplify our procedures and encourage decision making by consensus. As the new by-laws moved our annual meeting from January to December, in order to start the new year with a budget already approved and officers and deacons already in place, we essentially retained the lay leaders who had functioned so ably in 2015 for another year. We also enjoyed remarkable harmony and continuity in our staff. Long term pastoral leaders Rev. Peter Im (30 years!), Rev. Ed Stelle (12 years) and music director Travis Hatton (10 years) were joined in March by Rev. Chris Shade, who carries the portfolio of children, youth and families, but also brings creativity and energy to worship. It s been great to have the team complete. We are also fortunate to have continuity with our musicians and our administrative and support staff. God has also blessed us with financial resources. As I write these words, faith promises toward our 2016 budget are already at a level that bodes well for the new year, with pledges still coming in. With other income streams, from our Bridgetown friends, our parking lot, our lease of the Community Center (which hosts a new church start called Church of the City on Sundays), concerts and other public events, and the Gilmore Foundation grants toward the work of our Drop-in Center feeding program especially capital improvements to our kitchen and dining room we received and invested well over a million dollars in the Lord s work in I have been especially aware of the church s role in recognizing and honoring life-cycle events in A number of long time, faithful members of FBC were called home this year: Gary Kibble, Ron Shepherd, Janet Squier, Alexis Bishop, Zelma Stelle, Rosie and Bob McAllister, Jean Camper, Arnie Anderson. We rejoiced as Lois Knopf celebrated her 100th birthday. At the other end of the life cycle, five babies were born to parents connected to FBC: 3

8 Christian Itsuki, Michael Baranovich, Adelynd Newberg, Eleanor Greer and Rose Oliver. Baby Christian joined his parents to make up the Holy Family in our Christmas Eve live nativity scene. As senior pastor, I continued to provide pulpit ministry in 2015, but other voices joined me in lifting up God s Word in our public worship: Rev. Ed Stelle and Rev. Chris Shade from our own pastoral staff; our regional executive minister and FBC member, Rev. Steve Bils; and four American Baptist missionaries: beloved long-time friends Rev. Lauran Bethell and Revs. Ann & Bruce Borquist, and our new friend Kyle Williams, appointed in 2015 along with his wife Katrina to service in the Congo. Many voices give a rainbow of instruction and inspiration. As your senior pastor, I have continued to represent our Lord and you and make FBC visible in the broader community. I continue to convene a monthly prayer group of downtown pastors, and host the monthly downtown pastors lunch table. Out of that table emerged the shared Lenten services we enjoyed in February and March and the shared Advent services in November and December. Our individual churches are encouraged and the witness of Christ in the city is made stronger when we work together. Perhaps most notably, the sixth annual Downtown Compassion Clinic free medical, dental, visual, chiropractic, foot care services offered to our neighbors in the name of Jesus whose planning team I co-chaired, took place this year here at First Baptist. Our entire plant, save the sanctuary, was transformed in a day into a comprehensive care center. Fifteen FBC volunteers came along side volunteers from many other churches to make this happen. In January, for a fifth year, I organized a group of workshops for the giant, ecumenical Mission ConneXion event, on the theme of Jesus and Justice. Rev. Lauran Bethell and Rev. Peter Im were among the presenters I recruited. During the year I was privileged to participate in several activities and events outside of Portland. In February I participated again in the annual MMBB Pastors Colloquium in San Diego, where pastors of multi-staff ABC churches share experiences, strategies and our personal journeys. In June, Carol and I attended the ABCUSA Mission Summit in Overland Park, KS. I presented a paper on the biblical basis for creation care in the theologians conference that proceeded the Mission Summit. In September I offered an intensive Introduction to Christian Theology to Spanish-language ministry candidates of the Southern California Region of the Christian Church Disciples of Christ, in Claremont, CA. From there I journeyed to Baja California, Mexico, at the invitation of our ABC missionary, Rev. Tim Long, and the rector of the Dios con Nosotros theological seminary in Mexicali, Rev. Gregorio Gamboa, to share a series of conversations on green theology with pastors and seminarians in Mexicali, Tijuana and Ensenada. As I complete my ninth year as your pastor, I count it a privilege to represent our Lord and you wherever I go and in whatever I do. We are a church with a unique and intensely local ministry linked with a worldwide vision and enjoying global relationships. Thanks be to God. 4

21 Pastor Peter Im Cambodian Pastor Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Philippians 3:12 Each ministry year, I am very excited and glad to pause and recognize the blessings of our Lord and Savior who answers our prayer requests according his will and purposes for His Kingdom. Each year we have different goals and some are similar to each other for the growth of the ministry, both the Cambodian ministry here at FBC and in the children s ministry in Cambodia. With the visions of FBC and individual counsel of supporters and donors, we strive to move forward, reaching the goals that are set before us was another special year for the Cambodian people and our Cambodian ministry here at FBC because it was the 40th anniversary of our ministry here at FBC and 40 years since communist took over Cambodia in We are here to testify to the grace of God for his delivery of us from that communist regime by his loving-kindness and from the bondage of sin by the redeeming work of Christ on the cross. Our ministries are sharing the Lord here in this community and in Cambodia. We thank God for the opportunity to serve our Lord, Master and Savior who is full of love and compassion, along with our church, and supporters and ministry partners. Here are the 2015 highlights: We held many monthly potlucks full of unity and fellowship at FBC. We thank you all for your financial contributions each time. We hosted three fellowship dinner programs. There was prayer for the mission trip, a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Cambodian ministry here at FBC, and our mission trip report. There were many certificates of appreciation presented to the individual supporters and ministry partners, given to both members of FBC and non-members as well. We had our tenth annual Cambodian ministry camping trip at Ft. Stevens. Our first annual camping trip, ten years ago, had 36 members. Last year we had around 200, including people from Eugene to Seattle. We are so glad that Pastor Chris Shade was a part of the spiritual leadership of that tenth annual camping trip as well. For the growth of spiritual leadership and fellowship among Pacific Northwest Cambodian churches, we joined an Easter celebration at Khmer church in Tacoma, the All Church Picnic in Olympia, WA., and a Christmas celebration in Seattle. We had our own Cambodian Thanksgiving celebration and Christmas celebration with our FBC pastors joining us as well. We also are so blessed by our participation in the All Church Fellowship Dinners, full of many good programs and great food by our chef Mary Olson and her team as well. The second activity building of the Cambodian Children Center has been built and paid for by the Willamette Christian Church in West Linn. Their mission team members helped to build it during the mission trip. We are grateful to the Lord for their support. 17

22 There were around 1,000 people, both adults and children, joined the Cambodian Children Ministry Christmas celebration. That celebration has been successful each year because of your prayers and your individual financial contributions. I thank you all for your prompt response to the needs each holiday season. Also we are grateful to our longtime partner, who sponsored 100 chairs for the use of those two activity centers. Shirley and I would like give sincere thanks to all supporters of CCM behind the scenes who made this ministry possible. I want to give thanks to Samual Suo for the 2-year book binding fundraiser, and to everyone who helped support that project. Finally our Cambodian ministry here at FBC started to add more new members and grew, according to our goals and vision to reach out to more souls for His Kingdom. To God be the glory! 18

25 Chris Shade Associate Pastor On one level I cannot believe this is only my first year. I feel so comfortable here, it seems that I have been here for years. On another level, it feels like I just got here as I am still getting to know everyone and the processes and procedures of FBC. For this report I will cover various areas of my ministry and relay some of what has happened this past year and items we are looking forward to seeing in the new year. Youth Before I arrived the youth were working through the book of James. Thanks to Jendy Newman and Lynette Velasquez for keeping the Sunday School going in the interim. When I arrived, I began by establishing a solid base with the youth group by talking about what they wanted to learn, and crafting a Mission Statement that would be the foundation of the group. We also had a bit of fun in planning a sleepover that carried into the Grand Floral Parade where we handed out balloons to kids along the street. Boosted by the funds from our first T-Shirt fund raiser, the youth went on a summer rafting trip down the Deschutes River. It was a great time of adventure, sharing, and bonding. We saw some amazing vistas, hit some treacherous rapids, and climbed a thousand foot mountain. All the while, we shared our journeys with one another and reflected on where we were in life and where we were headed. The youth also had a great time at Camp Arrah Wanna as both campers and camp leaders. In the fall we began a series based on spiritual gifts and corresponding archetypes. Each youth took an evaluation to see what kind of archetype (or Spiritual Hero as we dubbed them) fit their gifts and personality. Then we started talking about ways in which we could promote our gifts in the categories of art, service, Biblical study, and adventuring. This year, I hope to take this process to the next level by making the goals more personal and sending each of the youth on their own quest. Additionally, in 2016 my intention is to expand the youth group. We do a number of fun and rewarding activities and I would like to invite others to join us and grow. I also hope to provide more opportunities for mission work in our community and beyond. Children The children s ministry was boosted with some new activities this year, and I hope to keep that going in This past year we started a new curriculum based on the lectionary called Whirl. We also made sandwiches for the drop in center, helped the leaders at the All Church Picnic, and participated in both the Palm Sunday and Family Christmas services. The children are an important part of the life and work of FBC and we must cherish them as such. 21

26 In the new year, we hope to continue the children s participation in worship and give an overhaul to the Sunday School rooms to bring them up to date technologically and aesthetically. Worship I am very fortunate to be invited to participate in worship and preach from time to time. I am thankful for the collaborative nature Pastor David brings to planning and executing worship and I believe our worship presence along with Pastor Ed is a cohesive unit. I have experimented with bringing dramatic elements, conversational sermons, and multimedia into worship with some success. I hope to continue this practice with the intention of reaching out to a wider base while remaining devoted to the importance the message. I have also dropped in from time to time on the Cambodian language service and have been blessed to help Pastor Peter with its various aspects including reading scripture and offering communion. I was also privileged to lead the youth and preach at the Cambodian Camping Trip, an event I intend to join in upcoming years. One aspect of worship I was proud to see was the involvement of youth and children. The youth remain faithful readers and worship leaders, and the children shared their voices and talents. In 2016 I will look for creative and meaningful ways to expand their participation as a blessing to us all. Lastly, in 2015 I conceived of a worship and devotional service called Friday Night Light. Although, technically this service did not begin until 2016, much of the planning for it took place last year. I am excited and intrigued to see where it will go this year. Personal This was a very big year for Renee and me. We both quit jobs and moved to a different apartment in a different state. I started at FBC and Renee embarked on a project in clean energy funding and development. In July we found out that Renee was pregnant with our first child, which we now know will be a boy. We both look forward to new experiences in 2016 including being parents and expanding job prospects. We appreciate all the prayers the church has offered on our behalf and feel blessed to be here. 22

27 Keith Ponce Facilities There are not many buildings in downtown Portland that are 122 years old. Let alone owned and operated by the original organization that built it. If someone from that era could see the building today they would surely recognize the building. It s a testament to the people that designed and built First Baptist Church. They would appreciate some of the improvements, like the heating and cooling system. Most of that is all good but as the building ages so do items that just wear out. The Fellowship Hall flooring is an example. It was replaced this year with a material that can be cleaned easier and will last for several years to come. We had the walls in the kitchen improved with a water/mold resistant material. We continue to make improvements to the kitchen with funds from the Gilmore Foundation that make the kitchen and adjoining areas more functional and clean looking. New ranges are on order payed for by the Gilmore Fund. Lighting in several areas that get use every day has been changed to LED s which not only save electricity but last for years rather than months. They will pay for themselves just in the labor saving of having to change out fluorescent bulbs. We also repaired the Taylor street sidewalk, damaged by tree roots, this will continue to be a problem in the years to come. Unfortunately the city would not allow tree removal and a complete rebuild of the sidewalk. We signed a three year lease with City Center Parking this last year. The parking lot is kept cleaner and the lighting has been repaired. Bridgetown signed for 2016 and made a verbal commitment for We are in the fifth year of a long term lease with Powers. It is operating in the black. The ailing FBC server was replaced with a newer, advanced unit that will reduce the amount of downtime and allow for future upgrades as technology advances. But it also is an old building with some deficiencies that will need to be addressed. The windows on the east and west walls are failing and will need to be re-glazed or replaced. The furnace is severely under powered for the size of building and has to work hard to heat the space. This will continue to cause higher than normal repair needs. 23

29 Travis Hatton Music Ministry Although 2015 was a year that saw the Temple Choir slightly diminished in numbers, the choir continues to present musical selections that include pieces designed for various parts of the worship service (for example, a choral call to worship) as well as weekly choral anthems. The choir has adopted a policy of coming down from the choir loft during the offertory for most services, with the exception of communion or special celebrations, such as Pentecost or Easter. The choir also sang special music at the Christmas Eve service and with a professional brass quintet at our 11:00 service on the Christmas service on December 20. We were also able to bring in a small string group of 4 players for our Easter service. This group accompanied the Temple Choir as well as the Cambodian Choir and the congregation in all the hymns. Thanks to some extra financial contributions from the Foley Fund, we were able to bring extra musicians into the 11:00 AM service during Advent as well as have an extra string group accompany us on the Sunday after Christmas (December 27). An adult handbell choir of about 10 members made appearances at our Easter service, and a smaller group of 6 appeared at the Christmas Eve service. As I was unexpectedly out of town on Sunday, December 20th (our combined Christmas service), the planned appearance by the handbell choir had to be cancelled. There was also a handbell group (of 8 members) that played as special music for one of the summer services. The handbell choir continues to be active and will work to expand our repertoire in The music presented at the early service during 2015 was mostly covered by the Voices In Praise (the VIPs). The Joyful Noise group suffered the loss of Bass player Dan Velazquez, who had to bow out because of health issues. This group is still around, but has been less active in the last months of There was a couple of services that were lead by Jonathan Khem, Tony Im, and Julio Guzman. Notably the Christmas service on December 20. Summer music in 2015 included a wide variety of singers and instrumentalists who performed special music. Among these musicians (in addition to participation from members of our own congregation) were guest singers and instrumentalists. Norm Lawson s barber shop quartet was one of the guest groups. 25

33 Moderator s Report 2015 The year of 2015 has been another memorable period for what I call this Grand Old Church in the heart of downtown Portland. We have been called the Crown Jewel of downtown Churches. Whatever we are called, we certainly have been teaching the Resurrection Gospel and Grace of Jesus Christ for over one hundred sixty years. As a member of our Temple Choir, I feel every time we enter our Sanctuary, the Spirit of God is present and must confess that I often begin to feel tears as I also do when I am privileged to be asked to read one of the scriptures for the service. Other members and staff will report on the organization, of the many programs and of budgets and money. I have in the past done the same, with a high regard for those efforts. There is a matter that I wish to make the congregation aware. Senior Pastor and I have been contacted by a several developers and are currently in conversation with one firm. If after these conversations and if the Diaconate approves, we would bring the matter to the congregation for its approval before any agreement could result. I speak to you, of all the members here and now, and of the past. I speak to the volunteers here and now, and of the past, to all the members who would attend, but cannot, all who have committed themselves and their lives and their treasure, in the past and now to the Lord s work through this church, First Baptist Church of Portland, Oregon, an American Baptist Church. God Bless Us All. Submitted by Wayne Cody Moderator 29

37 Worship Committee 1 will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips. Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt His name together. Psalm 34: 1, 3 The goal of the Worship Ministry Team for 2016 is to assist the pastors of our church in creating an environment for worship that will embody the words of this psalm and many others like it. Our pastors have been trained in their seminaries to offer worship that will lead us all to a deeper relationship with God. Our worship ministry team cooperates and coordinates certain worship experiences to enhance and support the ministry of our pastors to the people. We meet monthly with Pastor Wheeler and Travis Hatton to prepare for oncoming worship events. Senior Pastor David Wheeler, Senior Adult Pastor Ed Stelle and Cambodian Pastor Peter Im were joined by Associate Pastor Chris Shade in We thank God for his ministry this year. Our pastoral team has brought some new aspects of worship to us that aids us in being touched by God s Spirit. We look forward to other worship experiences as Pastor David and Pastor Chris share pulpit ministry in All of our pastors and lay leaders work together through Diaconate planning to enlarge the ministry to our neighborhood and to the world. The Worship Ministry Team has made two personnel changes this year. Rev. Anne Weld-Martin felt called to minister in other areas of church life at First Baptist Church. And, Jendy Newman has come to work with our Worship Ministry Team since July. We are pleased to know that God is working through both of these gifted ladies. For detailed events in worship ministry happening in 2015, review the report following, prepared by our Worship Ministry Team secretary, Robert Boughner. Bob has been our secretary for many years and keeps a good record of all worship plans and achievements, then and now. Last January, as I wrote my report, I asked for prayer for our worship ministry team and for me. I ask you still to pray on our behalf, that we will do God s will in cooperation with our pastors and that we will all feel God s Spirit alive in us at worship and as we live for Him in this world. May God bless us all as we live the words of Psalm 34:1,3 daily. Submitted by Rev. Norm Lawson 33

38 Worship Committee The Bylaws of FBC Portland direct the Worship Committee to supervise arrangements for Church services, and for the stated and special services of the church except for those provided specifically by another Committee. 42 Mission Outreach First Baptist Church is known for being a mission minded church. It has many mission outreach programs not only regionally and internationally but also locally. We are so grateful to our missionaries that God has called them to go to many different places to tell others about God s love for them. Our emphasis on learning about mission work both at home and abroad and giving of our financial means shows our strong commitment to various programs that show our Christian concern. Drop-In Food Ministry Another year has passed and the Drop In Center continues to minister to those among us who are less fortunate. In this past year we have served approximately 23,767 meals and have filled over 889 food box requests. The boxes are given to those folks who present a voucher from a local agency that confirms their eligibility to receive extra help. First Baptist Church is one of perhaps two that is able to both serve a meal and give out food boxes. We also provide a table with 800 to 1000 pounds of food twice a week that our guests are welcome to take home with them. We are extremely blessed for the support we receive from the church, the Oregon Food Bank, Oregon Culinary Institute,Starbucks, and Safeway in their help in providing food for us to use. Also this program would be impossible without all the faithful volunteers that make this ministry possible along with the gifts from the Gilmore Foundation and the Vincent Fund (Hatfield Family). This year drop in purchased a new walk in freezer, a new van and new gas range for the church kitchen with the funds from the Gilmore Foundation. Submitted by Jack Brophy 38

43 Local Ministries Angel Tree Ministry In 2015, we agreed to handle 25 children in households where there is an incarcerated parent. We finished with 24 of the 25 requested. To accomplish this, I needed three callers who would make contact with the guardian at the home to ask what gifts would be appropriate for the children in the home. In addition to these, six persons were needed to deliver the gifts. There were 18 persons who removed angels from the Angel Tree to purchase, wrap and return to the Angel Tree for delivery. All of the volunteers worked very well in their respective duties and all of the 48 gifts were delivered on Saturday and Sunday, December 19 20, to 24 delighted children. The Angel Tree program was initiated about 25 years ago by Prison Fellowship, founded by Charles Colson, who believed in Jesus as his Savior while held in prison for his part in the 1973 Watergate Scandal as an aide to then President Nixon. A former member of our church, Lloyd Harris, informed us of this ministry 22 years ago and we have participated every year since then. Submitted by Rev. Norm Lawson Dinner + A Movie We are so thankful for the continued partnership with First Baptist Church. Your support is so valuable to our program. Thank you for helping us to serve those in need. 44 FOCUS FOCUS continues to minister to the needs of international students at Portland State University as well as area colleges and English language programs. Our FOCUS Friday Nights (FFN) held at FBC continues to be a primary means of building relationships with students. We continue to have about students (around 100 total each week) mostly from Asia but also India and the Middle East. FFN is designed to be a safe space for students to come, have a simple meal, and discuss topics relevant to international students. Our volunteers are encouraged to build on the relationships that start on Friday night. As part of that we have been focusing this year to also go where the students are i.e. get to the campus and student activities. Our various other programs such as English conversation groups, airport pickups, homestays, etc. also are going well. We had the largest amount of airport pickups this fall! We thank FBC so much for the opportunity to serve students in this way through this partnership. We could not do it without you! Submitted by Andy Peloquin Alcoholics Anonymous The Eye Opener AA group continues to meet at 7:00 am daily in the FBC drop-in center. Average daily attendance varies between 25 and 50 people. As the only large,stable,daily,early-morning AA meeting in the downtown Portland area, the Eye Opener has always been a central part of the city s recovery resources, and it has continued to serve that purpose for the last year. More importantly, it has continued to help a great many broken men and women find a spiritual solution to drinking problems that are essentially symptoms of spiritual disease. We witness daily miracles in AA, and we feel the undeniable presence of a power greater than ourselves watching over us. The last several months in particular have brought an unusual influx of homeless, drug-addicted, and/or mentally ill people whose behavior in and around our meeting space has affected our ability to carry out our core mission, but we remain committed. We have made changes in consultation with church staff and leadership that we hope will improve security for AA members and others who arrive at FBC early each morning. The Eye Opener greatly appreciates the support, good will, and tolerance we have so consistently experienced from everyone at FBC during our long tenure in this good space. 45 Special Interest Missionaries The Mission Outreach Committee is responsible for receiving and hosting Missionaries who come to visit us and for promoting the raising of funds for Mission trips. Missionary Visits This year we have been blessed as a church to have special interest missionaries. Come and visit with us. On January 18 Lauran Bethell spoke to a combined Sunday school session and 11:00 AM service. She is our American Baptist Global Missionary whose specialty is bringing awareness and help to the world wide problem of human trafficking. Later on June 14th, Kyle Williams from Everett, Washington, who is now preparing for missionary work in the Congo with his family, spoke about his ministry and his preparing for the Congo field. He will be assisting in training of pastors and their spouses in theology. We were blessed as a church to have two of our special interest missionaries, Bruce and Ann Borquist come on October 4th and participate in all of our services and Sunday school worship activities. We are grateful for their years of ministry in Brazil, and their close association with us at church. Bruce and Ann will be beginning a new ministry as regional missionaries for Southeast Asia in 2016 providing training in servant leadership, integral mission, cross cultural mission skill and economic development. It s a privilege to support them as they serve and help people around the world. 47 Stewardship Committee The combined committee consisted of Bruce Bridgess, Margaret Marcuson, Pat Forrester, John Hartup as chairman of the First Baptist Foundation. Also staff members Keith Ponce, Cathy Francis and Pastor David Wheeler were members that regularly added their expertise to the committee. Several property projects were completed this year. They fell into three categories: 1) Safety Repairs [Sidewalks, entry way floor upgrade and water damage repair], 2) Computer and computer software upgrade making our systems more secure from cyber-attacks, 3) Upgrades of the Drop-In-Ministry facilities (Walk in Freezer, Van for food pick-up, new stoves, and miscellaneous kitchen repairs. We ended the year with expenditures exceeding revenue by $64k. This is mostly attributable to the Drop-In-Ministry upgrades where we spent designated funds recognized as income in prior years. We enter 2016 with significant increases in rental income from our Parking Lot and Bridgetown. We can rejoice in the ministries we support in down town Portland as a result of God s blessing us with the necessary resources and his guidance in the management of those assets. 48 Membership, Faith and Witness The Membership, Faith, and Witness Committee is alive and going strong! We are meeting regularly and have facilitated planning and execution of a number of events to strengthen the fellowship and deepen relationships within the congregation. Some of the high lights of this year include: EASTER FLOWERS were delivered to shut-ins in April. Balloons, coffee, punch and available rest-rooms were provided for visitors during the ROSE FESTIVAL in June Our ALL CHURCH PICNIC was held in July and as usual, there was wonderful food, a drawing for prizes, and fun for all. In July we contracted with Life Touch Studio to take congregational pictures and compile a new Church Directory. FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH COFFEE MUGS were made available for all new visitors and church members at our WELCOME CENTER. THANKSGIVING DINNER was coordinated by our committee and it was a wonderful time of food and fellowship for all. Christmas season was ushered in the 1st weekend in December with our annual CRAFT NIGHT. Many wreaths, centerpieces and crafts were made while partaking of the great food provided. CHRISTMAS FLOWERS were delivered to our shut-ins in December which finished out a great year. We were privileged to host several memorial RECEPTIONS for families of church members. Our committee, as well as many others gave hands-on support to the events enumerated above. We all share the responsibility of making this a warm, welcoming church where God is always present. 49 Christian Education Committee It was a very good year Our mission is to raise kids/youth to love Jesus Christ and understand the Word of God by providing solid Biblical theology in a fun, active, and safe environment that engages each child at his/her stage of life.(misssion statement.) The committee s priorities are Biblical teaching, active fun, and safety, We welcomed Pastor Chris Shade in March 2015 as Associate Pastor with responsibilities for youth leadership. Chris has introduced curriculum changes using the Church lectionery series for coordination of teaching. It uses appropriate cd presentations for the children. The coordination of children s sermons has been helpful for good follow-up. Pastor Chris gives leadership and assistance to the second hour program monthly. We will be reviewing the curriculum and technology used to address the changes in attendance between the 10am and 11am classes. Classroom data base will be finalized. The children participated in gift boxes for Samaritan s Purse. It was successful and the goal will be to start participation earlier. Thanks again to members who donated funds for the postage. We have been involved sending cards and notes to shut-ins. Recruitment of teachers and volunteers is on-going. We appreciate efforts and dedication of our current staff. We welcome new families and the opportunity to help nurture the whole family. We look forward to a much needed Sunday School rooms re-designing and use of updated technology. We will be encouraging intergenerational programs for our youth and children and FBC members. The youth participated in a Run to end Homelessness this fall. Craft Night was enjoyed by children, youth and adults in December. We are looking to 2016! Submitted by Bev Simmons 45

62 58

63 First Baptist Foundation (Established in 1962) The stock market in 2015 had much volatility and very little growth. The return on invested capital of the First Baptist Foundation was flat. This is to be expected now and then. On the positive side the First Baptist Foundation has averaged 7% over the past five years. Foundation investments are monitored by an investment committee and discussed at each Foundation Meeting. Total assets of the Foundation (market value) on December 31st, 2015 was $2,486, In 2015, the Foundation had the following income: Gifts: $ 2, Income earned from stocks and mutual funds $ 129, FBC Community Center loan interest $ 5, Total $ 137, The Foundation continues to work closely with First Baptist Church in supporting its basic budget and its various ministries. In 2015, the following distributions were made: First Baptist Church unified budget $ 102, Church computer system upgrade $ 10, Camp Arrah Wanna $ Rainbow Acres $ Cambodian Children s Ministry $ Meissner-Foley Fund worship enhancement $ Total $ 120, A special thanks to all the people who included the Foundation in their will and to those who contributed to the Foundation this past year. Federal Income Tax laws were recently changed. People over 70½ can now make distributions from their IRAs to a tax-exempt organization and deduct the gift from their required annual minimum distribution. This change has many positive tax-saving features. For more information talk to John Hartup, President of the Foundation. There are many ways a person can give to the Foundation and receive tax benefits. Any member of the Foundation would be happy to work with you or supply information. Submitted by John Hartup, FBF President 59
