1 Volume 80, No. 10 A Publication of First Baptist Church Portland, Oregon potluck What do the following have in common: fishing, an open table, grace, a troubled spirit, prom, a warm cup of coffee, angels and holy cows? The answer is you! Since my arrival here, we ve been exploring a variety of thoughts on what is church? and the answer we keep coming back to is - you! You are the church. It is not a building it is the people of God living in the community where God has planted us. I ve greatly appreciated and am honored by the way you have responded to the homework assignments. I have been blessed because you have opened your lives to me, to share some of your faith journey. I have come to appreciate the depth of your faith and the strength of your love for Jesus. I am also thankful for the great tradition that this congregation has and continues to carry forward into the future. God has asked you to do some great things not only here in Portland ut also around the world and you have responded faithfully to the call. I hope you are excited to discover what God has in store for your future. In the coming weeks, you will have an opportunity to come together and share what God has done in the life of this congregation and what you think God is calling you to be and do. If you have not already done so, save Wednesday nights as a time when you come out for supper and discussion about the present and future ministry of the church. The great preacher Fred Craddock once said, The question is not whether the church is dying, but whether it is giving its life for the world. I celebrate your willingness to give your life for Portland and for the world! I have survived the first month of the great Baptist dinners. You all love to eat! The joke going around is how long it will take me to gain the freshman 15 pounds. After the first month, I can say thst it will not take long! I m willing to put on the weight to be able to have you come together for fellowship, discussion and study. FYI- we are blessed to have such a beautiful building that is in high demand. Unlike far too many church buildings, our building is used almost all day, every day. We have people from all walks of life and from different organizations who enjoy and count on the use of the building. One of the issues that is always on our minds as a staff is the safety of all who come through our doors. To ensure that our building is safe and secure, we would ask that when you come to the church during the week, you enter through the office door on 11 th street and let the receptionist know that you are in the building. When you leave the church, we would ask you to let the receptionist know you are leaving. If you have been issued a fob, you may enter either through the 12 th street back gate or use 11 th street door. Thank you for your help in making the building safe and secure. Thank you for your ministry and thank you for the privilege to walk with you in your faith journey. Rev. Sam Brink

3 Fear Change? Change Fear. It is interesting to look at fear in this regard: not as something to be avoided, but rather as something to be used. Fear spikes a rush of adrenaline, which aids one in the fight or flight response. If the response is fight, the adrenaline produces strength; for flight it aids one with speed and endurance so escape is more likely. It can also make one laser-focused in order to quickly solve a problem. For instance, when people are about to get into a car accident they claim that time slows down and they see everything about to happen before it happens. Focus is heightened and reflexes are maximized. Perhaps this is why horror movies and roller coasters are so popular. They provide a safe way of recreating that adrenaline boost. It is not all Hulk strength and Flash speed, however. After the adrenaline subsides, the body feels drained. This is the body s way of protecting itself. Too many high-intensity moments will wear a person out. Adrenaline boosts are only intended for extreme circumstances. As such, the body has a natural inclination to avoid situations that create fear. Therefore, if people fear change, it is only natural that change is avoided. I would argue fear of change is actually fear of loss. However, loss does not always accompany change. Great gains can be found if one dares to venture. And even if something is lost, perhaps that loss is necessary to make room for something better to take its place. To find evidence of this, one need to look no further than the Gospel story. Repeatedly, Jesus says, For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever Pastor Chris cleaning out the Sunday School rooms. loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it (Mark 8:35). Jesus was a proponent of change and letting things go, even if it meant his life. For He knew greatness would emerge and love would always triumph. Consequently, ours is not a religion of death, but of Resurrection; not of loss, but of new life. It is fitting that Halloween happens in the fall. Fall is a time to mourn and celebrate death. Leaves change colors and drop to the ground, the days grow shorter, and we say goodbye to the sun. But, this is only a temporary necessity. With death comes new life. The sun retreats to make way for the much needed rain. Plants die to replenish the soil, which feeds new plants. There is a lesson there. Change is not something to be feared, but rather something to be embraced, for it is through change that new life arises. Harvest Fest 2018 Do you need an excuse to test-drive this year s Halloween costume? Are your Jack O Lantern skills a bit rusty? Do you love games, prizes and pumpkin spice? Then stay after church on Sunday, October 28 th and join the FBC Harvest Fest. Bring your friends, family, and neighbors! I Call Bingo! This year s Tea and Bingo Benefit was a great success. Thanks to Bev Simmons, Anne Dong, Darcia Hing, Leslie Cody, Barbara Bridges, and all the youth: Claire, Lily, Dylan, Caleb, Jesse, and especially our premier auctioneer, Jasmine. We had a lively time (to say the least) and raised $1,135 for the FBC Youth Mission Fund. (see page 2 for photographs). Pastor Chris Shade Page 3
4 Cambodian M He said to them, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinde Toward the end of this hot summer, we had a great opportunity to come together for a home Bible study hosted by Kakrona & Elizabeth Khem in September. We had a good attendance in our Sunday classes and worship services during the summertime, even though some of our active members were on vacation. We thank our home gardeners, who continue to bring fruits and vegetables from their backyards to share with us weekly. Our Cambodian annual camping retreat was a successful event once again, with the spiritual leadership of Pastor Chris Shade, Pastor Barnabas Mam, and Pastor Mara Kong (besides myself). 117 people joined this event with great food, fellowship, devotions at the campfire, morning devotions, a leadership seminar, and worship services. Our participants included members of the Emerald Bible Fellowship mission team, members from churches in Washington, and relatives of our church Bible Study at the Khem's. Page 4 members who regularly attend this event. Our God is good to bless this event with a new vision to reach more souls for His kingdom. The mission trip is confirmed: October 29 November 19. The opportunity to join this trip is still open. Please contact me if you would like to go with us. You also can participate in the trip by prayer and financial support of this year s projects. For the projects during this trip, we are building a playground for $2,500, a housing project for $2,500, providing shoes for soccer for $1,250, and Vacation Bible School (VBS) for $1,250. We are blessed to have sponsors for both the playground and housing projects, so we are now raising the $2,500 we need for shoes and VBS school supplies. Special thanks to our sponsors of these projects. If the Lord blesses you beyond what you are doing for his ministries now, please consider these

We want to buy fifty pairs of shoes and socks, $25/pair, ($1,250) and 625 school supply packages, $2 each, which is $1,250. There are other needs (such as fixing a bathroom and kitchen) that the mission team members are raising funds. I am grateful for these committed mission trip team members and the CCM committee members, who make every effort to support this organization and to assist me. I have sad news that Mr. Sarom Thean, who was a co-founder of CCM in Cambodia, passed away in August. Sarom worked with World Vision in Phnom Penh for over 20 years, and just retired two years ago. Sarom had worked with us as a volunteer board member and as CCM country director and treasurer from the beginning of this ministry. Sarom s survived by two children, a 12 year old girl and a 14 year old boy, and a wife who is now taking care of these children. We contributed financial support toward abdominal cancer treatment, but his life mission on earth has ended and now he is with his Lord and Savior. He was a great man of God. We thank him and his family for doing children's ministry with us for many years. Playground Project, in progress. Funeral service for Sarom Thean. Finally, I have good news for the CCM ministry and for partners, donors, and supporters: CCM officially became a nonprofit organization. So now you can give to this ministry directly, with your check payable to CCM. Please check our CCM website (CCMnews.org) for more about this exciting change. I am deeply thankful to FBC and their key leaders and financial administrators who supported this ministry without reservation all these years for the sake of the Lord s ministry toward the children of Cambodia. I am proud that FBC is a strong partner of this ministry. Please come to our All Church Fellowship Dinner on Sunday, October 21, right after church for dinner and our mission trip update. We will share details about the CCM ministry and ask for your blessing before we launch our mission trip. Thank you all for your sincere love and faithful support of the Cambodian Ministry here at FBC and the CCM. To God be the glory! You are also invited to join Cambodian potluck right after church on Sunday, October 7, in the dining room. Rev. Peter Im Page 5
