1 Volume 73, No. 3 Easter! For in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died (1 Corinthians 15:20). Our Christian faith is based on an amazing claim: Christ was dead, and now he is alive. Paul s enumeration of eye witnesses to the resurrection and his explanation of its absolute centrality to our faith, as found in 1 Corinthians 15, is the oldest written testimony to the resurrection. 1 Corinthians was written in the early 50 s A.D., before any of the four Gospels, and many of Jesus original companions the witnesses to the founding events of the Christian movement were still part of the communities of believers. Still, our modern skepticism balks at Paul s narrative. (It is harder to balk at his argumentation. What good would it be to bet your life on illusion?) And yet no matter how far the natural sciences go in explaining the processes of life and the dimensions of our universe, the very fact that we are, and that this amazing world of which we are a part is, in all of its astounding diversity, is a miracle beyond imagining. According to scripture, the heavens and the earth are the joyful, exuberant, intentional handiwork of our Creator. They burst into being as the product of the Creator s love. And we humans bear in our hearts and minds the imprint of that love; we are fitted by nature to be the Creator s partners in enjoying and 2011 Easter Offering By vote of the diaconate, our 2011 First Baptist Church Easter Offering will be divided equally between Camp Arrah Wanna and United Mission. Camp Arrah Wanna, our historic Oregon Baptist camp in Welches, Oregon, hosts children and youth camps for students of all ages, events for American Baptist Men and Women, and many other activities. They are making major capital improvements to serve us better. United Mission is the bread and butter of our life together as American Baptists in Oregon and across the United States, and connects us in mission and ministry to other Baptists around the world. United Mission funds regional ministries and the home operations of our international and national mission boards. Please mark your donation Easter Offering. caring for created reality. So then it is a small thing and yet it is everything that the One who loved us into being will never let us go, will enter into our brokenness and take upon himself the curse of death, that we may live. Death has been swallowed up in victory (1 Corinthians 15:54). Experience the Glory of Eastertide this year with your brothers and sisters in the faith. Join the roster of witnesses whom Paul calls out in 1 Corinthians 15. Continued on page 2 FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH SW 12th and Taylor, Portland, Oregon
2 Easter! Continued from page 1: Palm Sunday, April 17: Worship at 9 & 11. At the 11 AM service our children will process waving the palm fronds, reminding us of that first Palm Sunday when the King of Kings entered Jerusalem humbly, riding on a donkey, welcomed joyfully by the common people and feared and resented by the ruling classes. I will be preaching from Matthew 21 on the theme Open the Gate! Maundy Thursday, April 21: Solemn service of readings, music and Holy Communion at 7:00 pm. Good Friday, April 22: We join brothers and sisters of our neighbor congregations at noon at the First Congregational Church, 1126 SW Park Avenue, for a service of the Seven Last Words. Easter Sunday, April 24: Worship at 9 & 11. At 11 our English and Cambodian congregations will join together for a glorious festival of faith including the celebration of Believers Baptism. I will be preaching from Matthew 28 on the theme Don t Be Afraid! May our Easter faith ring out boldly and joyfully this year, in a world starving for hope. 4 Mission Trip 2011 Summer is sneaking upon us despite all the rain and dark days we have been experiencing it s coming! Our youth are preparing to serve this year, on the annual mission trip, in Yakima, WA, on the White Swan Indian Reservation, June 26 July 3. We will be doing lots of hard labor (especially after the massive fire that spread through the reservation in February) and working with the children s program. We would love your prayers and your support as we prepare! A glimpse of our students this past month Mission Trip Fundraisers We need you! Calling all church family and friends: we need your help raising money to send our youth on this year s mission trip. there are many opportunities to show your support, such as: APRIL 10: SPAGHETTI LUNCH immediately following the 11am service our youth will have prepared a delicious lunch for any and all people to come and hear about what we will do, past mission trip experiences and donate money. We will have a fun raffle my mom has always told me if you don t enter, you can t win. So, don t forget to enter! STOCKS: We will be selling stocks again this year for $20.00 (and there is no limit as to how many you can purchase!). Stocks are a great way to invest personally in the lives of our youth. This is how they work: you buy a certificate for $20.00 and will receive a handwritten note during the mission trip and an invitation to a stock holders dessert and slide show! CHANGE DRIVE: This fundraiser makes cents so we are asking any and all to save their pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters and help our youth fill their change jars. We would love to meet the goal of raising $500 in change! We can t do it without you!
