1 Maundy Thursday Service March 28, 2013 Central Presbyterian Church Central Presbyterian Church seeks to glorify the Triune God by embracing the gospel, building our community, making disciples, and transforming societies
2 The Season of Lent The season of Lent is a forty- day period during which the church prepares for the celebra8on of Easter The color purple symbolizes Jesus royalty and the spirit of penitence that should characterize our lives as followers of this king Lent began as a 8me of intense instruc8on, fas8ng, and prayer for converts to the Chris8an faith in the days leading up to their bap8sm at Easter It has since become a season of reflec8on, self- examina8on, and repentance for the whole church as we meditate on the life of Jesus and his call for us to follow him as his disciples During Lent, we focus on Christ s humilia8on and suffering as he sacrificed himself to serve a fallen and broken world even to the point of death on a cross We also lament the brokenness of ourselves and our world, and we consider new ways to heed Jesus summons to take up our own cross and follow the path of suffering service for the sake of God s kingdom that he first followed on our behalf as the Suffering Servant- King Therefore, observing Lent can be viewed as a spiritual spring cleaning, a 8me to give special focus to cleaning out the sinful aotudes and habits that hinder us from following Jesus and to establishing new habits and prac8ces that enable us to experience the abundant life that we can find only in loving and serving God While we should, of course, repent of our sins and seek spiritual growth at all 8mes, observing Lent provides a regular, special focus for examina8on and repentance in our lives as individuals and as a church body If we trust in Christ, we find mo8va8on and strength to do this from being united to the resurrected Jesus, the conqueror of sin and death Filled with his Holy Spirit, we can face our own sins and weaknesses with faith and hope In Jesus, we know that we are forgiven and accepted by God, and we have hope for real healing and transforma8on in our lives Maundy Thursday Maundy Thursday, or Holy Thursday, commemorates the evening of Jesus final week when he ate the Last Supper with his disciples In the seong of that Passover meal, Jesus taught his followers about his impending death, and he established the Lord s Supper, or Eucharist, as a regular celebra8on for the church The term Maundy is derived from the new commandment (La8n: mandatum) to love one another as Jesus loves us (John 13:34), which Jesus gave to his disciples in his teaching at the Last Supper Maundy Thursday services, therefore, have historically focused on both the pa[ern that Jesus life and death establish for our lives and the spiritual nourishment that Jesus gives us to empower that kind of radical commitment and service Just as Jesus loved us by laying down his life for us, so we also ought to love by laying down our lives for one another The love and the strength to follow Jesus radical commandment comes only from the spiritual sustenance that Jesus gives by his Holy Spirit to everyone who trusts and follows him That sustenance of Jesus own love and life is what he gives tangibly to his people in the Lord s Supper For more resources on Chris8an worship, see centralpresworshipnet

7 SEATED God instructs us in scripture reading John 13: A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another 36 Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where are you going? Jesus answered him, Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow aherward 37 Peter said to him, Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you 38 Jesus answered, Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow 8ll you have denied me three 8mes John 15:12-15a 12 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends John 21: When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you He said to him, Feed my lambs 16 He said to him a second 8me, Simon, son of John, do you love me? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you He said to him, Tend my sheep 17 He said to him the third 8me, Simon, son of John, do you love me? Peter was grieved because he said to him the third 8me, Do you love me? and he said to him, Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you Jesus said to him, Feed my sheep 18 Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go 19 (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God) And aher saying this he said to him, Follow me page 5
