If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not prachce the truth. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. stanzas 1, 2, and 3 of Come, Ye Sinners (next page) We confess our sin based on John 9:1-25 Liturgist: All: God of truth, you have called us out of darkness to see ourselves truly in the light of your word, and to seek you honestly in light of your mercy. But we are a people who oeen love darkness rather than light and blind ourselves to our own failing. We think we are humble, but we think more highly of ourselves than we ought. We think we are honest, but we twist the truth for our own gain. We think we are generous, but we do not truly sacrifice ourselves to serve. We think we are kind, but we get angry at the smallest offense. We think we are faithful, but our faith withers when we face the smallest trouble. Prayer for Those Searching Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Help me to be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent and convincing and that leads to the life you promise. Amen. Prayer of New Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared believe, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserved in order to offer me complete forgiveness.
