1 Richmond Hill Pentecostal Church Vision 2014 Come Boldly Metropolitan Multicultural Multigenerational Exalting Jesus Empowering People Evangelizing Nations 1

2 Welcome to Vision 2014! In this brochure, we have outlined our plans for the coming year of ministry at Richmond Hill Pentecostal Church. It is my hope that this vision serves to encourage, equip, and empower you to share in all our ministry and mission events throughout the year. Our theme for 2014 is Come Boldly! Hebrews 4:16 says, Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. It is my prayer that we will come boldly into his presence, come boldly into his provision, and come boldly into his power in 2014! Points to Consider: 1. Serving Together We are all different. We are all from different backgrounds, cultures, language groups; we are all at different stages of life, different levels of faith, different abilities, gifts, and commitments. We recognize that not everyone can provide the same amount of resources, time, or skill as another. Nevertheless, we are all called to serve. Vision 2014 is not intended for spectators; I am inviting you to participate. Be yourself, bring your unique gifts, and embrace a willing spirit. God wants to use you in his Kingdom community. 2. Reaching the Emerging Generation God is calling RHPC to proclaim the lifetransforming message of Christ to the emerging generation. Too often we can remain focused on how the church can meet our individual needs. The danger with this perspective is that we can continue to long for things that make us comfortable, safe, and sentimental. Yet, if we do not embrace the next generation, we will soon find ourselves with an aging congregation that is no longer relevant in the current context. We are looking for out-of-the-box thinking, envisioning new ministries, and fresh possibilities in proclaiming the timeless gospel in new and meaningful ways. Let s not fear change, but step out of our comfort zone with our eyes fixed on Christ. 3. Tithing and Volunteering Simply applied, I believe if every person in the church a) tithed 10% of their income according to the Word of God and b) volunteered in one regular ministry of the church, we would never lack finances and we would never lack workers. The burden of giving and volunteering should never fall to the few but should be spread out among the majority. If we all do our part, God brings the increase. 2

12 Reaching Unchurched People By Carey Nieuwhof Check out careynieuwhof.com If you re like many Christians, you have an authentic desire to share your faith with people who don t yet follow Jesus. One of my deepest longings is that every person would come to know the love and salvation that Jesus extends to them. Even since I started ministry 18 years ago, there s been a big shift in how unchurched people think. Particularly here in Canada, we are a bit of a hybrid between the US and Europe. Canadians are less religious than Americans, but less secular than Europeans. Postmodernism has a deeper toe-hold here than in almost anywhere in America except perhaps the Northwest and New England, where it might be about the same. Some are characteristics of unchurched people: 1. They don t all have big problems or are living in crisis. Most are very content with their lives. What does the church offer someone who is very pleased with the direction of their life? 2. They feel less guilty about their soul than you think. Many are not worried about their soul, but are longing for a deeper connection with God. 3. Occasional church attendance is regular church attendance. Unless you ve been raised in church from childhood, the thought of attending church every single Sunday is unusual. 4. Most unchurched people are still spiritual. Atheism is very rare. 5. You can t call them back to something they never knew. Telling them we need revival means nothing to them. Speaking about reviving a past spirituality is largely unhelpful. 6. If they re searching, they want to see authentic Christian faith living and active in YOU first before they re willing to give it a shot. 7. They re intelligent, educated, and intuitive. Speak to their intellect as well as their spirit. 8. They hate hypocrisy. They love transparency. Don t be afraid to show your struggles, doubts, and fears. Let them know that we re all in this together and there s nothing to hide. 9. They invite their friends if they like what they re discovering. They can become your greatest means of church growth. 10. Many of them wish to remain anonymous for a while. But when they commit, they usually commit with enthusiasm and excellence. 12

13 Top 10 Things First-Time Visitors Don't Want to Hear It is so important for churches to make a good impression on first-time church visitors from the moment they walk into church. Here is a list of 10 statements that just might do the opposite and turn first time visitors away. 1. Our pastor isn't normally this. Insert whatever you want in this blank: loud, obnoxious, offensive, long-winded. If you have to explain part of your pastor's style because you know that outsiders won't like it, you've got a problem. Talk with your pastor about that. 2. We're full. Sorry. Always have a backup plan. If someone sees that your service is full once, they'll deal with it. But they probably won't come back if they don't see a plan you have in place. 3. What are YOU doing here? At some point, someone you know from your neighbourhood or workplace will suddenly show up in your church. You will be shocked and surprised. Love them like you would anyone else. 4. No sorry, you can't get involved yet you've got to be a member first. Why would someone become a member if they've never had the chance to serve? 5. We don't believe in serving coffee on Sunday mornings. This suggests your church is way too spiritual to be of any earthly good. 6. What's your address? I didn't catch it on the first 6 forms you filled out. Respect people s desire for privacy. 7. You want to join our ministry team? You'll have to wait until next Fall. If you ask people to wait more than a month to join a ministry, they'll often look elsewhere. 8. If you don't like it, you can leave. They probably will. If people express a concern or complaint, listen and seek to understand. 9. You re sitting in my spot. Be happy to make room for others! 10. Next time, could you make sure to wear. Fill in the blank with "something nicer," "something that s clean or something a little more appropriate for church and you've offended someone unnecessarily. Creating a "come as you are" culture should be our aim, not creating a "come as I am" culture. 13
