2 From the Editor s desk So did you all notice my big error on the front page of the last issue? My apologies. A minister, Rev Alan Shaw, once shocked us by saying, If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing badly! His point was that if you wait till you are perfect before you start God s work, you will never start because you will never be perfect. Let us just do our best for the Lord. Perhaps my mistake will be encourage those in smaller, struggling Churches. If you feel you ought to start some new venture, don t wait till you feel everything is perfectly ready. Just start and by the power of the Holy Spirit in you, you will succeed. Please remember. Your dates and news for up to 6 th February by Sunday 7 th November to me please at belaw@tiscali.co.uk or at my address in the Plan. Oh, don t forget those articles that FHW used to send to Margaret. Every blessing. If anyone has lost them, can they please contact Anne Lawrence on Getting to know you There are many meetings and events in our new Circuit where people already know each other, especially if they have been involved in early joint meetings. However, in future meetings there will still be people meeting new friends for the first time and introductions can still be helpful. By these, we will all get to know each other better and more be part of the new Circuit. Ann Pope, (Circuit Steward). 3 Dear Friends, Superintendent s Letter It is amazing to think that we have now being living at 72 Wells Road in Fakenham for over a month. A lot of things have happened in that short space of time, including Wednesday 1 st September which was a very special occasion when we launched and dedicated the new Circuit with a vibrant and Spirit lead act of worship. We welcomed the Rev Valerie Spencer (Val) and her husband Chris who have come to us from the Bury St Edmunds Circuit, also a very familiar face in the Rev Rosemary Wakelin, as well as welcoming Sarah & me. As always our District Chair the Revd Graham Thompson preached powerfully and his message was particularly apt reminding us of the need to produce consistent acts of loving service, for every time people who are not yet Christians have a bad or negative experience of Christianity their ability to respond to the gospel message is put back to the very start. A challenge to all of us. It has been mentioned that it would be helpful to list each minister with their pastoral charge: Rev Andrew King: Fakenham, Fulmodeston, Gt. Ryburgh, Sculthorpe, Stibbard & West Raynham. Rev Brian Eagle: Swaffham, Sporle, Litcham, Tittleshall & Wendling Rev David Greenaway: Holt, Blakeney, Hindringham, & Thursford Rev Daphne Lloyd: Minister of Shipdham (Methodist / URC) LEP. Rev Val Spencer: Dereham Trinity, Beetley, Garvestone, Gressenhall, Mattishall & Toftwood Rev Rosemary Wakelin: Wells, New Holkham, Walsingham & Wighton Rev Barbara Winner: Watton, Great Cressingham, Great Ellingham, Hingham, & Saham Hills. (Also a Methodist service is planned at Carbrooke Parish Church usually once a month) With our Harvest Festivals approaching I leave you with this picture. Nature is not always fair and we do not always see the fruit of our labours. Here at the manse, Margaret & Jeff Smith had worked hard caring for all various plants including the fruiting bushes in the garden. I think of the lovely cultivated blackberries growing at the back of the garden shed which we have greatly enjoyed since moving in yet we have done nothing towards their care and preparation. This reminds me of what St Paul wrote in I Corinthians: Who is Paul or Apollos? Only servants through whom you came to believe as the Lord assigned to each their task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. (I Corinthians 3: 5-6) Church life can be like that too; one person has the seed of an idea, another waters it by careful and prayerful planning and action; yet it is God who makes it grow. Often it takes many years to see the fruit of our labour like the child we taught in Sunday School who may not come to faith until she is in her 50 s or older! Therefore we need to remain faithful in our sowing, watering and reaping even if we may not personally see the final harvest. God Bless Your Minister and friend, Andrew News item from David Roebuck, Circuit Treasurer At the Circuit Dedication & Welcome Service at Fakenham on Wednesday 1 st September, the retiring collection for the Pakistan disaster amounted to and this has been passed to M.R.D.F. 3

The SR Committee of the old Fakenham, Wells & Holt Circuit has passed many of its former activities to Churches Together in Fakenham and we need to consider what the role of the (hopefully!) enlarged Committee should be in the new Circuit. Issues to be considered will include Fair Trade, support for MRDF, immigrant workers, One World Week and Interfaith Week activities, Holocaust Memorial Day commemorations, rural issues (e.g. affordable housing) that may need to be raised with MPs, liaison with local schools on matters of social concern and anything else you may wish to raise so long as the meeting closes at 9.00 p.m.! Music of the Sphere! - a One World Week celebration in Fulmodeston Established as a Christian initiative in 1978, One World Week has grown into a worldwide movement of people from diverse backgrounds who come together to : o learn about global justice and share in the care of the earth and its resources; o stage local events which celebrate the diversity of cultures in their communities; o take action, locally and globally for justice, equality, peace and fullness of life for all. On 18 th October (7.30 p.m.), Fulmodeston Methodist Chapel will be collaborating with the Anglican churches in Fulmodeston and Barney to hold a celebration of our One World in Christ Church, Fulmodeston. The event will be led by Alison Cox, the Head of Composition at the Purcell School of Music, who has a second home in Fulmodeston. Alison reminds us that, Our world is resounding with fascinating musicians, instruments and sounds! During the past five years, she has encountered many amazing artists through her Commonwealth connections, and has helped bring them together through her international programmes to learn new skills from one another and forge strong, lasting friendships. She is always delighted when this happens and is keen to share some of these experiences with us. During the event there will be live performances by musicians from the local community 8

10 VARIETY SHOW AT HINGHAM METHODIST CHURCH We have been putting on these shows for several years now. It all began in 2004, when fund raising in a big way was needed, in order to refurbish our Chapel, provide toilets, kitchen, and storeroom, and sort out the Schoolroom! F.R.E.N.S (fund raising efforts never stop) was formed and fund raising in the form of fetes, band concerts and strawberry teas and variety shows began. The first three all singing, all dancing Variety Shows took place in the Lincoln Hall in Hingham and all were sellouts. Following this, we decided to leave it there, but due to popular demand and pressure to continue, we have now presented three shows in the Chapel itself. These were obviously not on such a large scale as the first three but were still full of local talent and guaranteed to amuse and delight all those who came along. At the first show a character called Miss Fitt appeared. Her full name being Miss Bluebell Fitt! It seems she was so popular with the audience, what with her Norfolk Dialect and the poems that she writes being so well received, that she has hosted every show since. Bluebell now has a huge Fan Club! Last November she shocked everyone by introducing her fiancée, Ivor Wood! It would seem that Ivor, new to Hingham Methodist Church, had won Bluebell s heart. The wedding was due to take place in May this year. Bluebell, as many of you will know, has always been a huge fan of Rolf Harris and he usually makes an appearance in the shows. On hearing of Bluebell s and Ivor s impending nuptials, Rolf offered them a home on his Australian ranch. NO ONE could imagine that Bluebell would travel outside her native Norfolk, let alone go to the other side of the world, but go she did! So now what will we do without her? WATCH THIS SPACE as they say and come and see for yourself, when we present ---- A WORLD OF VARIETY SATURDAY NOVEMBER 13 TH AT 7.30 PM HINGHAM METHODIST CHURCH TICKETS 6.00 EACH With a lucky numbered ticket will win a meal for two at Lincoln s Restaurant, Hingham! Hope to see you there! TICKETS AVAILABLE FROM: HEATHER PARLE (Snr. Steward, Hingham) A father was approached by his small son, who told him proudly, I know what the Bible means! The father smiled and replied, What do you mean, you know what the Bible means? The son said, I do know. OK, said the father, so what does the Bible mean? That s easy, Dad, he crowed, BIBLE stands for Basic Information Before Leaving Earth. 10
