Roy Ellis (73340) Sound System We had two very successful sound training sessions and we re looking forward to using everyone on the sound desk at some time. 3 What a lot of rubbish! Our waste and recycling bins have been moved because the place where we kept them in the past will become an alleyway between our property and the affordable homes. Our bins can now be found by going out the rear fire exit (by the toilets) and turning left. On bin days we ll take them out through the side gate and leave them at the edge of the property in front of the kitchen doors. David Hasson : Property Steward (75818) Church Chairs As you ll have noticed, the chairs have still not arrived! However, we ve been promised they ll arrive this coming week so hopefully next Sunday we can finally use them! Memorabilia : While clearing the kitchen we found a number of plates stamped Keswick Methodist Church. If you d like some, please feel free to take them. There s also a table with the last of the surplus stuff we found when moving! Please take anything you like. What s left will go to charity shops. Car Park You ll have noticed that our car park has suddenly become much smaller! That s because Sharp Edge Construction are in the process of building a new boundary wall, ready for the sale of the old hall to Keswick Community Housing Trust for affordable housing. At the same time they re erecting a shed for us, where we ll store some of our equipment that will be used only occasionally. We trust you ll bear with us while this work s in progress. Thank you.

4 The Prudhoe Gleemen in Concert : Saturday 23 June 7pm Tickets for our first concert in our redeveloped church are now on sale at 10 to include refreshments. The popular Prudhoe Gleemen Male Voice Choir was founded in 1903 and has an extensive repertoire ranging from "Nessun Dorma" to "You raise me up", taking in such standards as Fishermen of England, Cantique de Jean Racine and My Lord what a morning along the way! There should be something for everyone, so please buy your ticket now or just turn up on Saturday night. Convention Rota Yes, it's that time of year again, and we need your help! As you re aware, we're serving refreshments as usual for the three weeks of the Convention. This is a major part of our Church mission and the Conventioners are always extremely grateful for our welcome and hospitality. The money raised this year, as we ve now finished our Vision 21 fundraising, will be for our Circuit mission (as agreed at the Church Council in February). The new church set up should make everything easy to manage and will certainly involve less walking than last year! It will also be a good chance to try out the new kitchen (and dishwasher!). There are various job roles and they re all explained on a separate sheet next to the rota. Please read these carefully so you know what job you'll be expected to do (or you re letting yourself in for!). As always we really appreciate all your help and hard work. Thank you. 5 Calling all bakers! As part of our church mission of hospitality, we ll be welcoming our visitors to Keswick during the three weeks of the Convention by serving our usual refresments. This year the Church Council decided that the money we raise will be for our Circuit mission needs. So, we d be very grateful to receive cakes, traybakes, scones and biscuits of any variety (see the noticeboard for ideas). These can be brought to church at any time from now on and placed in the freezer in our new kitchen, which is looking very empty at the moment! We ll also be serving refreshments to our visitors during our Open Day on 7 July from 10am until 4pm. If you feel you could spare the time to bake something for this event also, that would be very much appreciated, but the Convention is the priority. If you d like your baking to be used specifically for one of these occasions it would be helpful if you could label your baking with either Open Day or Convention. Please also label them with a description (eg Lemon Drizzle), date baked and, if possible, any allergens contained (allergens are usually listed on ingredients and there are lists of allergens on the freezer in the kitchen please take one if you need it). Your help as always is very much appreciated. Thank you. 6 Bulletin 3 : Joint Leadership Team Meetings of the Whitehaven Circuit and the Keswick & Cockermouth Circuit Haig Pit 1. A report was given on financial progress. Both Circuits in similar position. Mandy and Nigel working towards a conservative 5 year plan. 2. Draft information for the profiles has been collected. A first meeting of the invitation committee is being arranged with the District Rep to begin work on the Presbyter and Deacon profiles. 3. We revisited the resolution about the name change. An amendment will be brought to the Whitehaven Circuit Meeting which will allow the resolution not to come into effect without any further action if the Keswick & Cockermouth Circuit does not agree to the merger. The amendment will take the form of adding the words If the trustees of the Keswick & Cockermouth Methodist Circuit agree to the merger to the start of the resolution. 4. We noted that the preaching plans start at different times. We agreed that the Whitehaven Circuit would produce a 2 month plan before September 2019 so that a joint plan can begin on 1 September We looked at positives and negatives for the merger. a. Positives i. We believe God is leading us in this direction. ii. We are being Christians supporting each other in difficult situations. iii. The merger is innovative and forward thinking rather than just trying to hold our own or catch up. iv. We would maximise the impact of our resources across the area and ecumenically.

7 v. Maximise the probability of successful stationing (16 people into ministerial training & 100 retiring means there is a massive shortage). vi. The Connexion encourages the cessation of single stations and therefore would look favourably upon this merger. vii. An enlarged circuit could draw on resources not available to a smaller one. viii. We would release human resources due to not having to duplicate Circuit Officers. ix. The Circuit Administrator role would free up ministers to do the tasks they were trained to, and want to, do x. There will be economies of scale. b. Minuses i. The amount of travelling needed would be problematic and we will need to be innovative about this. ii. Whitehaven could be seen as losing a minister to Cockermouth but we are looking at all staffing across the circuit while planning for a Deacon to be part of the staff team. iii. The plan could be more difficult to manage and fill but there are examples of good practice elsewhere which we could draw on. iv. There is a danger that churches on the extreme edges may feel excluded and we will need to watch that doesn t happen. v. Circuit Officers jobs may seem too big so preventing people coming forward. This shouldn t be the case but we would have to carefully monitor that. vi. There could be a loss of circuit identity but any new circuit would be working to build an identity. vii. Some may feel that we don t need this and can manage without a minister. Experience says churches can manage without a minister for a short time but then the load on the lay leaders becomes too much. There is also a loss of visionary leadership which we need to ensure any incoming minister has. 6. Our next meeting is Tuesday 14 August if the decision is taken on 20 June that the Circuits will merge. Both Circuit Meetings are meeting at the same time on 20 June when major decisions about the merger will be made. Please pray for those involved in these meetings that they might discern God s way forward for the future of the two circuits.

These are good ways to keep up to date on what we re doing. Vision 21 We re looking at how we as a church can move forward in the coming years. Stage 1 was raising money to redevelop our building to be more usable and easy to maintain. Stage 2 was having our plans made a reality, courtesy of our architect and our builders, Sharp Edge Construction. Stage 3 is living with the changes and sorting out any snags whilst moving on to Stage 4 and our vision! Follow our progress on our Facebook page, in the Newsletter and on the website.
