FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PG. 2 from Pastor Charlie... If you follow me on Facebook, I hope that you noticed my Thanksgiving project: Asking people what they were thankful for, having them write it down on a whiteboard, then taking their picture, and posting it online. It was a fun experience; among other things, it forced me to approach strangers, something that I usually find uncomfortable. My thanks to all the FPC members who indulged my persistence. Each answer was just right, but I think my favorite was the person who wrote before November 11th I m thankful for almost finishing the B90 reading. Hahaha! So true! For those who completed the awesome task of reading the Bible in 90 Days, from a group of more than 80 people who signed up for the program and began the readings in August, I m guessing there was a mix of relief, exhaustion and exhilaration to see the program end. The inevitable question now is, What s next? The B90 program offers lots of options. Its BNEXT program offers Old and New Testament Overview studies to learn the major themes of God s Word. There are more in-depth Book studies, and a Topical series as well. In addition, B90 offers the BEYOND ministry, which, according to its promotional materials, seeks to help you move beyond just talking about biblical truth to living it. It includes radio podcasts and other resources. To be truthful, if you are like me, perhaps what s most needed now is a little rest. (I d like to go back to the library and find some good fiction to read with my regained spare time.) From an educational standpoint, I m planning on resuming the Wired Word current-events-biblical study in January on Tuesdays at noon. And the Adult Education Committee already has planned some very good classes now and in the near future. My hope and prayer is that those who participated in the B90 program will continue to support further biblical literacy by using the energy and curiosity now awakened to attend classes offered at FPC Salina.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PG. 3 Children s Christian Education (FBI) The children have had a busy November preparing for the craft sale that took place on November 19th. It was a HUGE success with over $500 being raised through purchases of the crafts and baked goods. Thank you to all who supported the craft & bake sale through donations and purchases! The money will be used for the children to pursue service projects later in the year. As we continue through the coming weeks, the children will be working on their Christmas Program! This year, we will include significantly more singing than in years past. We are excited to share our voices and talents with the congregation. The children have worked hard to learn the songs and will continue to work hard to create a memorable performance for you. Please plan to join us on December 10th during worship for the Children's Christmas Program! It is difficult to believe that the children's program is already half way done for the school year! It is flying by! It is certainly a blessing to get to enjoy laughter, exploration, and fellowship with the children each Wednesday. Our biggest prayer for them is a healthy, safe, and happy upcoming year! Love, Shelby Dickson NURSERY CLOSED Christmas Eve - Dec. 24 New Years Eve - Dec. 31

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PG. 4 God Squad - Mid High Youth Group These last few months have been filled with delicious food from a number of different Salina restaurants. We've enjoyed everything from Blue Skye to Jalisco's to Sonic (and more)! Each and every Tuesday of our mid-high, God Squad, gatherings is filled with prayer, laughter, fellowship, and learning experiences. It is so neat to get to know the mid-high youth more and more as the year continues. In November, we were excited to begin a new monthly dining tradition by joining the Denning Family at their home for one of our Tuesday evening dinners. They prepared a delicious meal of chili, cinnamon rolls, queso, veggies, and more for our God Squad group. A number of families from the Children, Youth, and Young Adults committee have opened up their homes to invite the mid-high in for dinner one Tuesday a month. We are so grateful to those who've offered to host our group- we are so excited for the opportunity to get to know these families more while enjoying dinner with one another. As always, we are so grateful for the support of the congregation. Love, Shelby Dickson HeBrews Senior High Youth Group We gathered three Thursdays in November, with time off for the Thanksgiving holiday on November 23rd. The daily devotionals covered the following topics: A God of Second Chances God s mercy endures forever. Jesus told Peter to forgive those who sinned against him seventy times seven. We are in turn to show mercy and forgiveness to others over and over again. Faith Plus a faith plus evidence or knowledge of the things not seen Jesus wants us to explore, which ties to our Mission Statement words of Think, Question, Grow I m Blessed We agreed we all have Many blessings, including forgiveness of sins. We all wrote down one thing or person for which we give thanks. Those gathering received Presbyterian beliefs to ponder on these questions: Does God will evil and suffering in the world and in our lives? God does not override our freedom to make choices that result in evil. Why does the prayer of confession list sins I never commit? Corporate prayers of confession are ways of praying on behalf of those in the human family, as well as for ourselves. What does the Holy Spirit do? The Holy Spirit worked to cause Scripture to be written and the Holy Spirit works in the church and in the lives of Christians, leading, guiding comforting and challenging. If there are any Senior-High students that can t logistically attend the Mokas gathering on Thursday s at 6:45 a.m., and wish to receive a text of the weekly devotional and Presbyterian beliefs, simply text your cell phone number to me at and I will add you to the text. Material covered one week is not tied to the next week, so don t hesitate to drop in, anytime you are able. Randy Graham

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PG. 5 It was far from the usual Sunday worship service at First Presbyterian, Salina. It was Youth Mission Sunday, presented in the form of a faux newscast, Heifer Holler, in Blair Hall, with contemporary music during the commercial breaks. It was all designed to tell the congregation about the awesome, lifechanging experience of youth and their adult sponsors who traveled and worked for a week at Heifer Ranch in Arkansas last July. The Youth Mission Sunday program also sought to raise awareness of Heifer International s programs both home and abroad. FPC this year will again have tables in the parlor during Advent to raise money to buy animals to help feed the world. Books and gift cards for Heifer also will be sold. Or you may also make a monetary contribution to Heifer through the church. As part of a new fundraising effort sponsored by FPC Youth, clear plastic tubes will be displayed at the church through the year; the larger tube, when filled with 480 quarters, will raise $120, which will buy a goat, a sheep or a pig. The smaller tube, when filled with 240 quarters, or $60, will buy a flock of hope a combination of chicks, ducks and goslings or rabbits. What did we learn from Heifer Holler? That it was hot brutally hot and muggy, three-changes-of-clothes-and-showers hot in Arkansas in July. That the mission team split into three groups, maintenance, gardening and livestock. That they spent one educational night in the Guatemala and refugee sectors of a global village. And that it s important to have lots of snacks for hungry youth! Heifer International is a global nonprofit humanitarian assistance organization working to help end hunger and poverty, and at the same time protect the environment and care for the Earth. Heifer provides living gifts of area appropriate livestock and training in environmentally sound agricultural practices to families in need to help lift them out of poverty to become self-reliant. Thanks to those Youth and adults who traveled to Heifer Ranch and took part in Heifer Holler on Youth Mission Sunday: Cooper Cobb, Mason Gary, Will Hayes, Melissa Lidgett, Carson Michaelis, Azbey Peckham, Chloe White, Cindric White, Cora White, and Peyton Wood, and adult sponsors Stan Amick, Tricia Cobb, Randy Graham, and Seara Weir.

Join us in the parlor for Advent Trivia, before church Sunday, December 10th, at 9 a.m. This friendly but competitive game will be hosted by none other than Charlie Smith! There will be new categories and questions this year, with plenty of holiday treats to share. Of course coffee or hot chocolate too. This is fun for the whole family so please plan to be there! Led by Christ, Together in Faith and Love, We Joyfully Think, Question, Grow and Serve!

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PG. 7 Walk to Bethlehem (W2B) Talk about falalalalalala: Walk 2 Bethlehem is making tracks! As I am writing this on Nov. 20th, we are already 55% of the way to our 6,713 mile goal. That s 3,692 miles down and fewer than 3,100 miles to go. It s so fun each week to see the totals come rolling in. Our thanks to all the faithful trekers to Bethlehem. December 22nd is the last day. Don t stop now. Keep moving and keep reporting and we ll be in Bethlehem right before Christmas Eve. Look for the display outside the sanctuary to pick up a mileage tracker/calendar plus the activities list. The weekly devotions that are in your weekly reminder will also be there. Just as it is never too late to follow Christ, it is never too late to hop on this Walk 2 Bethlehem! All are welcome. See you on the trail to Bethlehem! Contact: Brigid Hall bdhall@swbell.net OR Diana Smith Christmas Joy Offering - December 17 & 24 The Christmas Joy Offering celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, the truly indescribable gift, as well as the gifts of church leaders - past, present, and future. In the second letter to the Corinthians, Paul talks of a generous gift that has been promised. As he sends folks ahead to make arrangements for this gift, he takes the opportunity to illuminate the impact of generosity. Paul grounds readers first in God s generosity, reminding us that God not only provides seed for sowing and bread for food, but God goes further, partnering in human generosity both as source and as amplification. The gifts we give are from God, and they are multiplied and increased by God as we give. The result of the generous gift made by the Corinthians therefore has a compounding effect, enriching the Corinthians in every way. It results in impact to those whose need is met, and the ministry made possible by the gift - to the giver of the gift as well. It then overflows in thanksgiving to God and benefits the whole church as it inspires and testifies to the gracious work of God through Christ. It is that grace, then, that Paul describes as indescribable. Through the work of the Christmas Joy Offering, we seek the living of this truth: that God s generosity is the source, the support, and the outcome of our own. We give because God has freely given. We give to support the needs of our church leaders - past, present, and future - and God amplifies and extends those gifts through the ministry of those leaders. Their gifts of ministry extend and amplify as well, overflowing in thanksgiving to God, and the entire environment of generosity bears witness to God s grace, a truly indescribable gift. A church worker in a time of need receives the generosity of the church in the same way they have been generous in their service to it - then turns around and makes a gift himself to help other church leaders in need. A student at Presbyterian Pan American School receives the generosity of the church and responds by dedicating his life to serving the church. The work of the Offering is compounding generosities, with unending expansion and ceaseless increase. In gratitude to God for the gift of Jesus, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) invites congregations to join this celebration of God s presence with us by supporting those in need of help and hope. Thank you for your support of this life-changing offering. Three Ways You May Give: 1. Place your offering in the special "Christmas Joy" pew envelopes on either Sunday, Dec. 17 or 24. Please make your check out to "First Presbyterian Church", and include "Christmas Joy" in the memo. 2. Text JOY to to give $10 3. Give online at: presbyterianmission.org/give/ christmasjoy

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PG. 8 Stewardship 2018 The Stewardship Campaign is drawing to a successful close. However, it is not too late to mail your pledge, bring it to the church office or simply call Melanie at and provide her with your pledge. We want everyone that is able, to have the opportunity to participate in the support of the ministry of FPC. If you did not receive a pledge card or if you believe you may have misplaced it, just give Melanie a call at the number above and she will make arrangements to provide you one. The Budget Committee will soon be organizing its meeting times, so your prompt response would be much appreciated, in order to determine the amount of funding available for the rapidly approaching new year. Once again, thank you to all who have made a pledge, all who have worked on the campaign and all who support FPC in so many ways with time, talents and treasure. The Stewardship Committee, Peter Johnston, Randy Graham, Kathy Hanson, Amanda Michaelis, and Martha Rhea Did You Know You Can Pay Your Pledge Online? Visit our website at: There, you have the option to setup an account (you must do this, if you want to contribute via bank account) or you may utilize "quick give" without going through the initial setup process. Setting up a contributor account is encouraged, as you will have access to all giving history via this method, have the option to setup recurring gifts, and many other features! In addition to your pledge, there are many other ways you may contribute to the church. Select the fund you want to contribute to in the drop down menu when remitting online. We accept donations via all payment methods. For credit cards, we have enabled the option of the donor contributing towards the processing fees associated with credit card acceptance. If you are making an in-kind contribution or paying your pledge, the additional 2.75% processing fee is also tax deductible. MidWeek Manna Worship Service FPC Salina s MidWeek Manna meal and worship service on Wednesdays will be taking intermittent breaks during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. Since this is a season of thanks and gifts, and the New Year brings a time for resolutions, consider this: Each of you who attend the MWM meal and worship service are a gift for which we give thanks. The service continues to be popular, with an average of about 30 people regularly attending. The service is fulfilling its purpose of being a mix of mission outreach, with non-members attending, and a viable worship option for over-scheduled and over-burdened families with kids. With the new year, our prayer is that more FPC members would resolve to support MWM by attending regularly. 10 FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PG. 9 Advent at FPC When you think of the word Christmas, what comes to mind? The holiday is truly a feast for the senses sight, sounds, touch, feel, taste isn t it? Join us at First Presbyterian Church, Salina, for worship during the Advent and Christmas seasons as we explore the senses of Christmas. On the First Sunday of Advent, December 3 rd, we ll be exploring the tastes of Christmas, looking at the reason why Jesus came, as we partake of the bread and the juice of communion as a reminder of the body and blood of the Lord. On the Second Sunday of Advent, December 10 th, we ll look at the touch of Christmas, and how Elizabeth s baby touched her and leaped in her womb when Mary, who was expecting Jesus, came to visit her. On the Third Sunday of Advent, December 17 th, we ll look at the sounds of Christmas, as we listen to the sound of activity, the sound of silence, the sound of joy, and the sound of crying. On the Fourth Sunday of Advent, the morning of December 24 th, we ll look at the smells of Christmas, smelling the stable full of humility. We will smell the baby and his approachableness and the full extent of Christ s love. Finally, on Christmas Eve, the evening of December 24 th, we ll talk about the sights of Christmas, and what we might have seen that first Christmas. Of course, what would the Christmas season be without tradition? During Advent, we ll have the traditional lighting of the Advent wreath. On December 10 th, the FPC FBI children will present their Christmas program. In the Parlor, Advent Trivia will be played before the service, sponsored by the Adult Education Committee. On December 17 th, the Chancel Choir will present a Lessons and Carols concert. This service tells the story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus in Bible readings from Genesis, the prophetic books and the Gospels, interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols, hymns and choir music. FPC Salina will celebrate two Christmas Eve services at 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. on December 24 th (in addition to the regular 10 a.m. worship that day to mark the Fourth Sunday of Advent). The 5 p.m. family-friendly worship service will feature carols, candle lighting, and the return of the popular Christingles ( Christ lights ), introduced last year, that are used to celebrate Jesus Christ as the light of the world. Christingles, which originated in the Moravian Church, are oranges decorated with a candle, ribbon, fruit and sweets. The 10 p.m. traditional worship service will include candle lighting and music from the Chancel Choir.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PG. 10 Haul out the holly; Put up the tree before my spirit falls again. Fill up the stocking, I may be rushing things, but deck the halls again now. For we need a little Christmas Right this very minute, Candles in the window, Carols at the spinet. So, let s get festive! The words to the song, from the musical Mame, may not be deeply theological, but it s true, you know: We all really do need a little Christmas. And the first step in creating the right mood is decorating. So, on Sunday, December 3 rd, the First Sunday of Advent, to prepare for Christ s coming, we ll celebrate with a Hanging of the Greens, including greenery traditionally associated with everlasting life. Greens such as cedar symbolize royalty, fir and pine boughs are associated with everlasting life, holly symbolizes Jesus death, and ivy represents the resurrection. When you arrive at church that day, you ll notice that much of the preparation and hanging have already been done. Be assured, though, that we need you to play a part, too, with the hanging of ornaments on the Sanctuary tree. Who knows? You might even discover a picture of yourself, either from our I m a Star! selfies last year or the I m Thankful For Facebook project this year. Christingle Workshop Please join us at 9 a.m. on December 17th in Blair Hall to make Christingle's that will be used at our 5 p.m. Christmas Eve Service. Last year, many of our children and families helped to make this- we hope that you'll join us again to do so! As a reminder, a Christingle is a symbolic object that means 'Christ's light'- come help us celebrate Jesus Christ as the "Light of the World."

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PG. 11 On Sunday, Dec. 17 at 10:00 a.m., the First Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir, accompanied by an ensemble of 15 musicians, will present Lessons and Carols during worship. Lessons and Carols is a time honored and much beloved holiday tradition, featuring a heartwarming blend of your favorite scriptures with both traditional Christmas music and newer pieces destined to become part of this wonderful tradition. Don't miss this wonderful event on Sunday, Dec. 17, 10:00 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Salina. Advent Devotional Now Available Presbyterians Today 2017 Advent Devotional Let Love Speak: Words and Actions to Pave the Way of the Lord is a devotional guide written by Magdalena I. García, PC(USA) minister of Word and Sacrament and hospital chaplain for Vitas Healthcare in Chicago. 13 FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PG. 12 New Online Church Directory Tis the season. The Christmas season, yes, but also the dreaded Christmas card season. Some Christmas cards, and the pictures that go with it, are masterpieces. Perfect, beautiful pictures, and lyrical prose that positively sings. Then there are the exceptions: Too-long, boring letters and pictures that should never have seen the light of day. (I ve included in a few examples of what I know you already can recognize: Even after all these years, these pictures make me tremble. And I ve cropped out everyone but myself to spare others the pain and embarrassment.) So, if this is the season that your family will be gathering for a formal picture, make a note to yourself to make an extra copy to submit to the church office for our new online directory. If you already have a picture that you d like to submit, now is the time. We even make it easy for you by providing photographers who will take your picture after worship services on Sunday and Wednesday. We d like to wrap up the picture-collecting phase of the new directory soon. You may expect a call in the new year to try to arrange how to collect your photo. Many thanks!
