1 First Presbyterian Church encourages people to live their lives faithfully, daily, where they are, and with what they have been entrusted, to the glory of God. Our mission is to let our light shine and be beacons of hope, equipping people for life in the world. PRELUDE WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CHORAL INTROIT THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD ORDINATION AND INSTALLATION January 9, 2011 DEEPLY ROOTED IN FAITH (* for those able to stand) CALL TO WORSHIP AND PRAYER FOR THE DAY Leader: Deeply rooted in faith... People: We choose to live in hope. Leader: As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. People: There is one body and one Spirit, just as we are called to the one hope of our calling. Let us pray: Holy God, you sent your Son to be baptized among sinners, to seek and save the lost. May we, who have been baptized in his name, never turn away from the world, but reach out in love, by the mercy of Christ our Lord. Amen. * PROCESSIONAL HYMN 525 Here I Am, Lord
2 PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison) Merciful God, in baptism you promise forgiveness and new life, making us part of the body of Christ. We confess that we remain preoccupied with ourselves, separated from sisters and brothers in Christ. We cling to destructive habits, hold grudges, and show reluctance to welcome one another; we allow the past to hold us hostage. In your loving kindness, have mercy on us, and free us from sin. Remind us of the promises you make in baptism so that we may rise to new life, and live together in grace. (Silent confession) ASSURANCE OF PARDON Leader: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel: People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. RESPONSE TO PARDON Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace) (see insert) PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION (Children in the balcony may now come down to be ready for Children s Time.) FIRST READING Isaiah 42:1-9 The Word of the Lord. (pg , OT) Thanks be to God. CHILDREN S TIME Deb Shetlar (Children may now be seated with their parents or leave for the nursery. Children K-3rd grade may join their leaders at the back of the sanctuary to go to the third floor for Sunday Enrichment class.) ANTHEM Chancel Choir GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 3:13-17 The Word of the Lord. (pg. 8, NT) Thanks be to God SERMON "Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and the Baptized" Jim Hawley *HYMN 492 Baptized in Water Bunessan
3 ORDINATION AND INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS Reaffirmation of the Baptismal Covenant There are a variety of gifts, but it is the same Spirit who gives them. There are different ways of serving God, but it is the same Lord who is served. God works through each person in a unique way, but it is God's purpose that is accomplished. To each is given a gift of the Spirit to be used for the common good. Together we are the body of Christ, and individually members of it. STATEMENT OF ORDINATION AND INSTALLATION REAFFIRMATION OF THE BAPTISMAL COVENANT PROCESSION The Apostle's Creed (The Presbyterian Hymnal pg. 14) THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM The Lord be with you And also with you Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
