2 America s Distribution Center Memphis is known for her role as America s distribution center, and the Chamber of Commerce promotes our runways, roads, rail and river as great assets. Memphis therefor has much in common with New Testament era Corinth, except for the runways and rails. Corinth too was a major distribution center in the time of Christ, situated at crossroads by sea and land. Corinth, and the churches in Corinth were dealing with problems that continue to plague Memphis and her churches: broken relationships among citizens, spiritual confusion and pervasive immorality. I hope you will join us in Sunday School as we begin our study of First and Second Corinthians on Sunday, March 4. You will discover that the timeless truth of the Word of God applies to us in the twenty-first century, just as it did to the citizens of Corinth in the middle of the first century. May our Lord Jesus bless you and keep you. In Christ, Dr. Gary Redding At a recent Senior Adult Ministry luncheon, Roger Webb, CPA, (our Chairman of Deacons and Chairman of our Budget and Finance Committee) spoke about the new tax law and the potential benefit of making charitable donations from your IRA Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) directly to the church or another charity, rather than taking it as income and then making your donation. This is known as a Qualifying Charitable Distribution (QCD). Here is some of the information he shared: You no longer have to wait until December to give from your RMD to charity. You can give from your RMD to charity anytime during the year. If you are 70½ or older, you can transfer up to $100,000 to charity tax-free each year -- even if that s more than your RMD. The money counts as your required minimum distribution but isn t included in your adjusted gross income. But, you have to wait until you actually turn age 70½ to make the tax-free transfer to charity. Unfortunately, only funds from an IRA can be used for a taxfree transfer. 401(k) and ongoing SEP and SIMPLE IRA plans do not qualify. It is not tax-free if you withdraw the funds first. The contribution must go directly from the IRA account to the church or other charity to be tax-free. Otherwise it will be counted as income to you first. A tax-free transfer from your IRA to the church or another charity can possibly reduce your Medicare premium surcharge and/or reduce the tax on your Social Security benefits. QCDs are limited to the amount that would be included in income. Therefore it does not include non-deductible IRAs. QCDs will be reported on form 1099R at the end of the year. You will need to keep records to document the amount given to charity so that you can reduce the amount showing as taxable on the form 1099R. You will still need to obtain the acknowledgement from the charity to prove the contribution. It is always recommended that you prepare a projected tax return for 2018 or consult with your tax advisor to determine the amount of potential tax savings before implementing a QCD and to make sure you are following all the rules. Depending on tax brackets, for some there could be no benefit but for others, the tax savings could be substantial. If you have any questions about using your IRA or other assets to support the ministries of FBC Fisherville, please contact Dr. Gary Redding at gredding@fisherville.org, or contact your financial advisor.

5 Sympathy to: David Harrison on the loss of his brother-in-law, Steve. Murray O Kelly on the loss of his sister. Gladys Davis & family on the loss of Gladys aunt, Margaret Breland. Keith Allen on the loss of his aunt, Jean Allen. Kevin German on the loss of his father, James This week I ve been singing the words to the Steve Green song Find us Faithful in my head. It s just a song that has always encouraged me to try my best to be an example of faithfulness to all of those around me. As the news of Billy Graham s passing came out today, I think of how he heard those words; Well done my good and faithful servant. I hope as you read the lyrics below it will encourage you and maybe you will be singing it in your head all week as well. God has been so faithful to us. What will folks say about us after we ve left this earth? Bart Starr We re pilgrims on the journey Of the narrow road And those who ve gone before us line the way Cheering on the faithful, encouraging the weary Their lives a stirring testament to God s sustaining grace Please continue to be in prayer for our pastor search committee. They are diligently praying and meeting in the search for our new pastor. Listed below are the names of those serving on the committee so you can pray for them by name. Chuck Beaver, Tony Bond, Martha Beckett, Kathy Hamner, Chris Trout, Nathan Sullivan & Drew Webb. Surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses Let us run the race not only for the prize But as those who ve gone before us Let us leave to those behind us The heritage of faithfulness Passed on through godly lives After all our hopes and dreams have come and gone And our children sift through all we ve left behind May the clues that they discover And the memories they uncover Become the light that leads them To the road we each must find Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful May the fire of our devotion light their way May the footprints that we leave Lead them to believe And the lives we live inspire them to obey Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful
6 Dear Friend, My father, Billy Graham, went into the presence of the Lord on February 21, The Bible tells us in Revelation 14:13: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them (NKJV). Many have said that his death ends an era, but he would be the first to say that when God s ambassadors die in Christ, the Lord raises up others, because the preaching of the Gospel will go forward until the end of the age. God s blessing continues as He opens doors for the Gospel around the world. BGEA remains committed to preach the Word in season and out of season across the globe. My siblings and I would appreciate your prayers in the days ahead as we honor a man who served the Lord with his life, loved his family, and was always grateful for God s faithful people who supported him in the work of the ministry in Jesus Name. As we lay to rest this very public ambassador, please pray with us that the testimony he leaves behind will touch many lives and point them to salvation in Jesus Christ. My father s journey of faith on earth has ended. He has been reunited with my mother and has stepped into the eternal joy of Heaven in the presence of his Savior, in whom he placed his hope. If you would like to know more about my father s life, share a memory, or read public visitation details, please visit BillyGraham.org. God bless you, and thank you for your prayers for our family and the staff of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Sincerely, Franklin Graham BillyGraham.org 2018 BGEA 04229
