2 Grace and peace to you all! Lately, I ve been reflecting a lot about pride. Part of that may be because I have watched the local theater s performance of Bill W. and Dr. Bob many times in my work on the light design. The play is about the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous and their wives, and while it doesn t directly talk about pride, it does demonstrate how pride can manifest itself in addictive and painful ways. Pride is a dangerous thing. There s a reason tradition holds pride as one of the Seven Deadly Sins, and some traditions even went so far as to claim pride as the original sin, at the heart of the decision Adam and Eve made in the Garden to become like God. Pride creeps up when we claim to have all the right answers. Pride is when we declare our thought, opinions, and ideas are the only correct way of thinking. Pride is when we think we have the strength to make it on our own, and don t need to ask for help. Like Bill W. and Dr. Bob, we are all struggling with some sort of addiction. It may not be to alcohol. It can be to our work, our schedules, our technology, our comforts, or any number of other things. Surrendering our pride and admitting our addiction is the first step in making a change in our lives. As you reflect on what your addiction might be, I would encourage you use the Serenity Prayer as a means of opening yourself up to God s grace and guidance, as we let go of our pride and seek help for all our struggles, fears, and needs. God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage the change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardship as a pathway to peace; taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; trusting that You will make all things right if I surrender to Your will; so that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with You forever in the next. Amen. -P.S. Pastor Seth Lenten Workshop March 10 th at 9:45 am As we celebrate the Lenten season, we are hosting a workshop with come crafts and activities for the whole family! 4 Sunday Worship Series: The Power of Prayer Join us on Sundays at 8:30 and 11:00 for our worship series! Prayer is one of the simplest and easiest ways for us to connect with God, but many of us find it hard to pray. In this series we ll explore different kinds of prayers and how they can help us approach God in a healthy, holy way that will help us grow in our faith. Wednesday Worship Series: Creed Join us at our Worship On Wednesdays for our series on the Apostles Creed! This creedal statement used by Churches for centuries is a great summary of the basic beliefs of Christianity, but it also reveals some profound truths of who God is, and how God relates to us. This series is based on the book Creed by Pastor Adam Hamilton, and will coincide with various small group opportunities for anyone who would like to explore the meaning of the Apostles Creed on a deeper level. Lenten Study Series: Creed To help us further explore the themes and lessons in our Wednesday Worship series, we are offering various opportunities for a small-group study using Adam Hamilton s book! If you would like a book, you can find a copy near the Coffee Shop in our Narthex. The different groups that will be using this study are as follows: Sundays at 9:45 am in the Intergenerational Room (L1), led by DiAnn Kleinsasser Tuesdays at 7:30 pm in the Prayer Room (M14), led by Pastor Seth Wednesdays at 12:05 pm in the Prayer Room (M14), led by Tom Dravland 2019 Youth Auction March 3 rd at 12:00 pm Our High School and Middle School youth are gearing up for an exciting trip to Kansas City! This summer, they will be meeting with United Methodist youth from all over the nation for worship, service projects, and teaching sessions. To help cover the cost of this event, we are holding our annual Youth Auction on March 3 rd at noon! There will be a lunch provided for a free-will donation, and this is a great opportunity to not only support our Youth, but to show our appreciation for all the local businesses and people who have donated to this auction. c 4

5 Hello, My name is Gloria Miller, I work with the National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP) in Pierre, South Dakota. The NFJP is a nationally-directed, federally funded and locally administered program for employment and training services and housing assistance for migrant and seasonal farmworkers under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). The NFJP provides grants to community-based organizations and public agencies that assist migrant and seasonal farmworkers (MSFWs) and their families attain greater economic stability. The NFJP has been successfully administered by Black Hills Special Services Cooperative (BHSSC) in South Dakota for the past 20 years. The program helps farmworkers acquire the skills they need to retain agricultural jobs or start new careers. As part of WIOA regulations, NFJP outreach workers and Case Managers must be trained in local office procedures to protect farmworkers against sexual harassment and human trafficking. Sexual harassment and human trafficking are pervasive problems that impact people of all genders, races, ethnicities, and ages in the United States and worldwide. Surveys find that one in four women report workplace harassment in the US and it is estimated that there are 20.9 million victims of human trafficking globally. As a particularly vulnerable and economically disadvantaged group, migrant and seasonal farmworkers are especially likely to face sexual harassment and human trafficking. As part of WIOA regulations, the NFJP are committed to protecting farmworkers from sexual harassment and human trafficking. BHSSC/NFJP staff will be hosting its 2 nd Annual Human Trafficking Awareness conference in Pierre on March 7 & 8 th. Please see link below if you or any of your staff are interested in attending. Additionally, a separate event, free of charge, will be held for parents and educators on Wednesday, March 6 th from 6 7:30 PM at the Riggs High School theater. This event will focus on helping parents learn how to respond to cyber-crimes, situations, concerns, or crimes where computers, phones, tablets, s, clouds, social media or other technology is used to facilitate a crime. This event is open to the public and highly encourage any parent or adult with children to attend. Might we be able to promote this event by providing you with fliers to be handed out to church members? Our Case Manager will gladly print as many as you d like and bring to you to distribute. If you have any questions regarding this, please feel free to call, my direct line is Looking forward to hearing from you. Kind regards, Gloria Important Notice: The Digital Safety presentation is geared toward parents and highly recommended that youth/ students NOT attend due to the mature content. 11 United Methodist Women Vows to Work Across Difference, Create Inclusive Spaces for All Feb. 27, 2019, St. Louis, Mo. As the United Methodist Church concluded its three-day, special session of the General Conference, United Methodist Women vowed to work across differences in the furtherance of mission on behalf of women, children and youth. United Methodist Women CEO Harriett Jane Olson, issued the following statement: The Traditional Plan adopted by General Conference invites clergy, bishops and congregations who do not support the church s stand regarding LGBTQIA persons to leave the denomination and form another expression of Methodism. However, while our membership has many opinions about the matters considered at General Conference, United Methodist Women stands together, committed to serving women, children and youth. Part of the United Methodist Women Purpose is to be a creative supportive fellowship, and that s what we intend to do. For United Methodist Women, commitment to the Purpose and prayer are the only litmus tests for determining who can belong, who can serve and who can devote themselves to mission. Our differences make us stronger. We continue to be open to any woman who chooses to commit to our Purpose and mission. The Special General Conference was difficult for all even the Traditional Plan adopted may not be enforceable but LGBTQIA sisters and brothers bear the brunt of the pain. United Methodist Women will continue to pray for our beloved church and stand in solidarity with all those who are in pain. United Methodist Women will continue our focus on mission, Living out our Christian discipleship together, and addressing the needs of women, children and youth. Posted 2/27/
