2 Grace and peace to you all, and Happy New Year! I hope that as we begin 2019, you may be filled with excitement and joy about the opportunities that a new year can bring. I know many have looked back on 2018 and envisioned something of a dumpster fire (in other words, they are glad to see the year gone). And yet no matter how terrible our 2018 may (or may not) have been, we are still here. Our Church has seen its fair share of struggles, changes, aches, and pains, but we are still here. And because of that fact, I praise God! I praise God that we are able to continue in our ministry in this community! The journey ahead may be long, treacherous, and difficult, but God has been faithful to us throughout the years, and will continue to be faithful as we look ahead to There is a song that our Praise Team has lead around this time of year entitled For All That You Have Done. It was written by Rend Collective to the tune of Auld Lang Syne. The lyrics of this song are all about God s faithfulness through the ages, and how God has been with us from mountain top to valley low, through laughter and through tears. It also talks about how as we look ahead to the future, we will stand together as one. As family we ll go, shoulder to shoulder, hand in hand, into the great unknown. Friends, 2019 is still a great unknown. There are numerous opportunities for the year to become a dumpster fire like years past, not the least of which being the great crossroad the global United Methodist Church will be facing just next month. But no matter how things turn out for our Church globally or locally, God is faithful. This congregation will still exist. Our mission will not change. So I hope that in this new year, you will continue to stand together as one family of faith so that we can continue to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. May we step boldly into the great unknown, filled with the confidence of knowing, as John Wesley said, that the best of all is, God is with us! May this New Year fill your life with love, your heart with hope, and our world with peace. Amen. -P.S. Pastor Seth Shelley Nielson
3 Boys and Girls Club The Leadership Board of Pierre First UMC would like to let the congregation know that our Church has been approached by the Boys and Girls Club about the possibility of opening our doors to their students while their current facility undergoes renovation in In the 1950 s, our Church opened its doors to the Pierre School District in a similar situation. You can find more information regarding this request in the Leadership Board Minutes (available online and in the Church Office), but the Leadership Board wants to ensure that the congregation can help address any concerns or questions regarding this opportunity. To that end, the Board has asked Tom Dravland, Jeanne Goodman, and Scott Jones to review this request and help facilitate discussion between the Church and the Boys and Girls Club. If you have any questions or comments you d like to share regarding this opportunity, please contact Pastor Seth, Tom Dravland, Jeanne Goodman, or Scott Jones. There is an informative meeting on this subject on January 13 between services in the Sanctuary. Dear Church Family, As you are making your New Year's Resolutions, prayerfully consider how you can best serve the church and our mission of making new disciples for the transformation of the world. If you are led to help out with WOW meals, the church nursery, Pathfinder Sunday school or Journey Wednesday school, please let me know. Thanks! Happy New Year! Peace, Shelley Nielson
4 One Thing for January: Chunky or Progresso Soups As the weather turns colder, one of the items that can be comforting is a nice hot bowl of soup. Bring cans to the Church at any time over the month of January and you can help make a difference! Thank you for your generosity! Thank you! Thank you! In December the one thing was socks (all sizes) to be distributed to Missouri Shores and Tree of Life ministries. The goal was 150 pairs of socks. Thanks to everyone s generosity we collected 411 pairs of socks! The mission Team would like to thank the congregation for generously giving to this ministry!! January Loose Change Offering: Nourish Body & Soul (NBS) For the month of January, our Loose Change offering will support our own NBS. Your spare change can help support their mission to furnish warm clothing and food to persons needing help in our community. Nourish Body and Soul is a group in our church that makes up boxes of food and any warm clothing that we might have and gets them to needy persons in our community. T Shirts Are needed, if you have old T Shirts you no longer want (they can have stains) the church would like them. They are cut into strips and crocheted into mats Please Pray for the Following Nikole Cheskey (Lorrie Pederson s daughter now has pneumonia); Jim Riswold (Kayla Pochop s Father-in Law battling Metastic Colon Cancer); The Family of Doris M. The United Methodist Women (UMW) Purpose The Organized Unit of the United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. Pierre First United Methodist Women has four circles. Circles do not meet in the Summer instead we have an informal coffee once a month on the 4th Tuesday at 9:00 am in Wesley Hall Elizabeth Circle, meets at the Church in Wesley Hall the second Wednesday of the month at 1:15 pm Dorothy Collett Lydia Circle, meets at the Church in the Cooking Center the first Saturday of the month at 9:30 am Mary Weischedel Martha Circle, meets at the Church in the Cooking Center the second Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm Elaine Scott (We start-up in September) Reading Group, meets at the Church in the Inter-Generational Room the 4th Sunday at 3:00 pm. They read and report on some very interesting books. Penny Galinat The United Methodist Women (UMW) was very happy to give away the pins we have been holding on to for quite some time. The recipients were: Bonnie Schroyer, Ron Smith, Shelley Nielsen and Barb Sogaard. A money gift was sent to mission in their names and they were given a pin to wear. These four were very deserving of the pins. We try to pick persons each year that don t always get recognized for all they do in the church and community. We want them to know that their generosity does not go unnoticed. The United Methodist Women s next big event will be the Valentine Luncheon on February 9, 2019, this is for men and women. Make plans now to attend for a fun time and great food. Address for Willa Hieb s Daughter: Janet Herman Rolling Ridge RD Omaha NE
