Holy Spirit Catholic School Newsletter -- September 15, 2017 The Mission of Holy Spirit Catholic School is to develop independent, life-long learners who can and will live for Christ! A good time was had by all at the Fun Fair! It was a beautiful evening filled with games, food, fun, and friends! Thank you to all who gave of themselves for this important event! The kids look forward to it every year! Each child is a masterpiece of God created with precision for a specific purpose." Catholic WOW (Word of the Week) Doxology - A prayer praising the Blessed Trinity. The greater doxology is the Glory to God (Gloria) prayer in the Mass; the lesser doxology is the prayer Glory to the Father. And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. -- John 20:22
Dear Holy Spirit Families: Hurricane Harvey recently took place in Texas and has devastated many families. We would like to host a canned food drive to help families not to worry about their next meal and allow them the opportunity to place their financial efforts toward restoring their homes and belongings. From September 11-22, we invite Holy Spirit Families to help us with this effort. Your child may bring canned goods to school, and the class who brings in the most cans will receive a pizza party. Thank you for your time and consideration. Have a blessed weekend. Halle, Grace, and Alexandra 8th grade students at Holy Spirit Join us in praying for: Jillian Blackhall -- Alumni Jessica Satterfield Alumni Gym Update This week, the concrete has been drying and the new wood has been brought into the gym so that it can acclimate to the humidity of our building. 3 Keeping Kids Safe Online All parents are invited to a Keeping Kids Safe Online presentation by Sunflower House on the following dates in September: Tuesday, September 19 th at 2:00 pm in the Holy Spirit AV room Tuesday, September 19 th at 7:00 pm in the Holy Spirit Library Keeping Kids Safe Online is a program designed by Sunflower House, the Overland Park Police Department, and the FBI Cyber Crime Task Force. The purpose is to teach parents about the possible danger of internet usage, practical safety tips & tools and the cyber crime reporting process. The presentation covers electronic safety concepts, including gaming systems, music devices and other wireless/internet communication. As stated in the Holy Spirit Handbook, parents of all children bringing a cell phone to school are required to attend a Keeping Kids Safe Online presentation one time (not annually.) All parents are invited to attend the presentation, even if your child does not bring a cell phone to school. Students in grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 will attend the student version of Keeping Kids Safe Online later in September. Students in these grades will receive a separate permission slip for this program. Technology and Your Child - Joshua Center Parent Workshop Do you have questions about what effect technology has on your child or teen? Are there constant battles at home about how much technology is too much? Is it difficult to get your child off a device? Do you worry about gaming addiction? Join us for this workshop led by Mike Sumler, LMFT, and he'll answer all of your questions. He'll discuss how technology effects their brain, what limits are important, how to implement these limits without meltdowns, and ways to use technology to your advantage. He'll also discuss different apps and things you should know about them. Event is October 12th from 6:30-8:30 pm at Joshua Center for Neurological Disorders, 400 E. Bannister Road, Suite A Kansas City, MO Cost is $35 and pre-registration is required. Contact Joshua Center at (816) to register or for more information. Preschool had a visit from Ernie Miller Nature Center!
HSPA Restaurant Night Sonic (by Oak Park Mall) The first HSPA restaurant night of the school year is at the Sonic at 9801 Quivira Rd. on Tuesday, September 19th between 5:00pm and 8:00pm. A portion of the proceeds from all orders will be donated to Holy Spirit Parents' Association. Please join us! 8th grade students volunteered at St. Mary s Food Kitchen. Holy Trinity Presents Screenagers Holy Trinity is showing the film "Screenagers" on September 26 at 7pm in the Father Quigley Center on the campus of Holy Trinity. This is a community event with a $5 ticket price, but the majority of the money is going to cover the license of the film. It is not a fundraiser. The information is perfect for parents and children in the 5th-12th grades who have smartphones and are into gaming. The link below has all the information including a short trailer. Tickets can be purchased on the link or online on the Holy Trinity website at
At Holy Spirit, close to 400 students (whose parents had given prior consent) participated in spot vision screening. Vision exceptions such as anisocoria, anisometropia, astigmatism, and myopia were identified in some students PreK-8. Thank you Leawood Lions Vania, (Mrs. Schropp), Tina, Doug and Jim! Most surprising was the number of students who have failed traditional vision screening in the past but passed without exception. In other words, it was impossible to intentionally fail, saving parents the time and expense of needless evaluation by an eye care specialist. Mrs. Schropp On Thursday, September 7, Preschool had their Beginning of the School Year Family Mass. All families were invited to join us in welcoming everyone to Holy Spirit and celebrating our Blessed Mother s birthday. Children brought flowers to place in front of her statue on the altar, sang "Happy Birthday and enjoyed birthday cake! It was a wonderful, blessed evening and a great tradition for our Preschool!
First Grade had fun this week using ipads and working at centers!
