1 Broadview Missionary Baptist Church Kenya Mission Trip 2016 Submitted by Willie McLaughlin Our mission, to carry out the Lewis Travis Movement/The BIG M.O.E. to the uttermost parts of the land, was a success. Our work took us from Nairobi, Kenya to the Tanzania Border. We traveled across the land evangelizing to those who needed to hear and read the word of God. We worshipped and prayed with staff and servants employed at our living quarters, children in orphanage shelters, Curio Shop employees, and others. We held church anywhere we could gather: a small room, under a tree, and even in our dining area. We also held a group prayer service before we went out to start mission activities....but as for me and my house, we shall serve the Lord, Joshua 24:15 KJV. Johnny Hutson taught Sunday School while Deacon Larry Smith brought the message to the children. Cheryl Sconiers led songs and fed the children. All the team members did a great job in making this mission trip a success. 2 Kenya Mission Trip 2016 Continued from page 1 Two of the situations that touched us all were three little Ethiopian girls (ages 8, 15, 17), walking all the way from Uganda to the orphanage, and another Somalian family consisting of a mother and daughter, to flee their country because of tribal wars. The refugees all ended up at the same children s shelter home. The refugees were raised as Muslims. Our mission was to tell them about Jesus Christ. We taught them about Jesus and shared testimonies. We gave Bibles, with outlined scriptures to read, as personal gifts to the two oldest Ethiopian girls, ages 15 and 17. We are praying that the Lord will touch their hearts. We represented BMBC to the best of our abilities. Our team members did a great job. One of our missionary tasks was a team member supplying the orphan shelter with a stove and a washer. We also supplied shoes, and school uniforms for 30 children, from primary to senior year in school. We supplied food, medical assistance, school supplies, and a birthday party for all of the children. A farewell dinner for the children and staff was a special treat for all participants. 3 The Voice The Jerusalem Team Outreach Submitted by Ada Thompson The Lewis Travis Movement/The BIG M.O.E., under the direction of Mission Pastor Robert Walker, is currently working with new directors, Corey and Ada Thompson and outreach leader Jared Holley. The BMBC five-year Strategic 2020 Plan will further develop and refocus all ministries on the Lewis Travis Movement/The BIG M.O.E. The main purpose of the ministry is to provide the congregation with numerous service opportunities, random acts of kindness, and mission outreach opportunities within a five-mile radius of BMBC. The Jerusalem outreach team has established three goals: 1. Increase BMBC presence in the local communities to reach more people with the gospel. 2. Maximize our churches resources by uniting with the various ministries within the church on different outreach projects. 3. Create a database of church members who are willing to get involved in local outreach projects. 4 A Father s Legacy: The Human Touch Submitted by Patrice Hill As a little girl, my father would come home in the evenings and find me lying down on the couch downstairs in the front room watching television with my grandmother. As soon as I heard my father coming through the door, I would shut my eyes very tight and pretend to be asleep; I knew he would pick me up, carry me upstairs and tuck me into bed for the night. Never was there a time, from then until now, that I felt safer than in my father s arms. His was the heart and soul of a man, who gave everything he had, He was a friend, a husband, a father and yes, he was a Dad. He served the role of soldier... the story remains untold; A watchman and protector wearing medals of brass and gold. He came back home from the war, his life forever changed; A very different man, I m told his purpose rearranged. He never spoke about it, but carried it every day, I caught a glimpse of it now and then, when he took time out to play. As a child, my view of my father, was childlike and obscure I wasn t sure who he really was, until I was more mature; It is through those eyes I see him, a man who was loved by all, So I write to the next generations: Here is what I recall: Money, power, prestige, was never his legacy, But life, love and humor, were the gifts he gave to me. I saw myself as a canvas, in my father s loving eyes; The artist making ready to paint; sunny days and bluer skies! The canvas clean, the colors vibrant, the brushes ready to flow; But before he could finish the picture, it was finally time to go. His children were his masterpiece; he painted them strong and bold; His legacy lives whether or not, he saw his dreams unfold. My father strived to give so much the little things and such; But the legacy most endearing was that his was the human touch. Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not, Proverbs 8:33 KJV. Pacific Garden Mission Housing and care for homeless people Community Partnership with Lacey Hill A Success Submitted by Dea Larry Lee On Saturday, April 30, 2016, BMBC partnered with the Lacey Hill Community Outreach and Hands of Hope of Illinois to have a food give away (pictured below). The food give away was held in the northwest corner of BMBC s parking lot. Over 15 Broadview members staffed the give away. The goal was to donate food to the first 500 cars arriving between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Despite a continual downpour of rain throughout the day, the food give away supplied food to over 300 cars. Matthew 25:35 is the Lacey Hill community Outreach theme, For I was a hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in, Matthew 25:35. Page 5

6 The Jerusalem Team Outreach Continued from page 3 The Jerusalem outreach team recently hosted a recruitment fair to acquaint the members with various local charitable organizations. Organizations that were in attendance included: Housing Forward: Their mission is to end homelessness. They need breakfast, lunch, and dinner providers, and morning and overnight helpers for the shelter sites. To get involved visit, involved. Proviso Partners for Health: They are working to promote healthy eating habits and active living within the Proviso Township area. They need volunteers for a variety of work groups: planting gardens, village wide community cleanup campaigns, wellness promotion in school districts 89 and 209. To get involved visit, Child Evangelism Fellowship: Their mission is to impact the community for Christ. They need volunteers for their 5-day summer clubs, after school good news clubs, and light construction work for their Housing Urban Ministry Building located on 12 th and Madison. To get involved visit, Quinn Center: They are working to promote social outreach programs within the community. The Quinn Center needs volunteers for programs that address the needs of senior adults, summer teen, tutoring, and art programs.
