2 Faith Naboth s Vineyard Last Monday and Tuesday, in the daily mass readings, we had the Old Testament story of Naboth s Vineyard from the 1st Book of Kings [21:1-29]. The story is well known. A man named Naboth has a vineyard next to the palace of Ahab, the king of Israel. The king wants the vineyard and offers to give Naboth a better vineyard in its place or to buy it from him, but Naboth refuses to part with the vineyard because he considers it his ancestral heritage. King Ahab, who is a weak and ineffectual individual, returns to his palace after discussing the matter with Naboth and immediately goes into a decline. He takes to his bed and refuses to eat. When his wife, Jezebel, who in contrast to her husband is a strong but evil person, asks what the problem is and King Ahab tells her about Naboth s vineyard, she says to him, A fine ruler over Israel you are indeed! Get up, eat and be cheerful. I will obtain the vineyard of Naboth for you. She then has Naboth arrested on false charges that he has cursed God and the king and as a result he is put to death by stoning. Then she tells the king to go and take possession of the vineyard. As he goes to do this, however, God tells Elijah, the prophet, to go there and confront him with the evil that has been done in his behalf. The Lord instructs Elijah to tell Ahab: After murdering, do you also take possession? For this, the Lord says: In the place where the dogs licked up the blood of Naboth, the dogs shall lick up your blood too. Elijah carries out his mission, and after telling Ahab what the Lord has said, he, personally, takes him to task for the evil that has occurred during his reign, telling him that God will destroy [him] and cut off every male in Ahab s line. Needless-to-say, Ahab is very frightened by this. We are told that he tore his garments and put on sackcloth over his bare flesh, and that God then relented (temporarily at least) in carrying out his punishment, but states that he will bring the evil upon [Ahab s] house during the reign of his son instead. Interestingly, the names of both Ahab and his wife, Jezebel, are well known for their later use in artistic settings. Ahab, for example, is used by Herman Melville as the name of a fanatical ship captain whose fixation with evil leads to the destruction of his ship and crew in his novel Moby Dick in In a similar manner, the well-known 1938 film Jezebel, starring Bette Davis in the title role, uses that name as a symbol of evil and selfdestruction as well. In the biblical narrative itself, both Ahab and his wife meet brutal ends. King Ahab dies in battle from a random arrow [1 st Kings 22:34ff.] and Jezebel is thrown from the window of her palace [2 nd Kings 9:30-34], and in both cases dogs lick up their blood and feed on their corpses as God had prophesied. Naboth s Vineyard offers a good example of a fairly common OT theme: God punishing those who have led Israel from the path he has set before them and, as is frequently the case, there is plenty of blood and violence set forth in the process. In contrast, both last Monday and Tuesday s gospels are taken from chapter 5 of Matthew s gospel, where Jesus speaks to his disciples on the nature of Christian love, telling them for example, You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly father [Mt. 5:43-45]. These two world s the violence and retribution of the OT and the love of one s enemies that Jesus discusses in today s gospel provide a good example of the deepening understanding of the ways of God that come from the teachings of Jesus. Based on feedback, we know our participants enjoyed their experience, and we look forward to once again providing this class next year to families of our school and sponsoring parishes who have students from 0-6 years old. In the school year, we will be offering the program in both English and Spanish language. Although school is out for summer, our campus continues to show exciting youth activity--our Preschool and Extended Day are busy with their summer programming, and Mr. Yannarelly has been busy leading many of our middle schoolers as they explore landmarks of the Twin Cities as part of their summer session. This summer, middle school students are also helping paint murals in our school that align with our main mission components: faith, inclusivity, and love. We are SO excited to see the results!
