2 FAITH WHY WE NEED A NEW FLOOR IN OUR CHURCH Last weekend, I made an appeal for the church floor fundraiser. For the benefit of those who were not here and for those who were not able to hear me well, I am publishing the content of my talk in this week s bulletin. As you were coming in today you might have noticed two large signs one at the entrance and the other in the Mary Kane commons. It said: St. John Vianney church floor fund. You may ask what is it or what is wrong with the floor and why do we need to replace it? Before I get into it, let me give you a little bit of the history of the Parish. St. John Vianney parish began with the official opening High Mass on July 28, 1946 in the rented lodge building at Kaposia Park. The ground breaking of the new church was held on Aug and on Easter Sunday April 06, 1947, the building constructed of materials from two army barracks became the first church building. When the school building was completed in 1955, the roller rink built in 1950, which was attached to the school building, became the present church. The first renovation and remodeling of the church was done in the mid 1980 s and a lot of things changed except one - the black tile on the floor. When the parish celebrated its golden jubilee in 1996, it was noted in the souvenir the black tile used on the floor for skating is the tile presently on the floor of the church. In the year 2000, there was another major renovation and rebuilding was undertaken - this time the new gym was built along with the Mother Theresa room and the Mary Kane commons. For lack of funds, the church floor was left untouched. So after 67 years, the floor is showing significant wear and tear. It is chipping and cracking and in some places, entire tiles are coming off the floor. You can even hear it cracking when you walk on it. This is not good news and it presents a lot of challenges as the tiles contain asbestos. The time has come for us to do something about it, by replacing the floor completely. With this intention and after presenting it to the parish and finance councils, a committee was formed, various options were explored and we came to the conclusion that: The asbestos tiles have to be removed There will be finished concrete under the pews (for easy cleaning and keeping the costs down) We will install carpet along the aisles. The total area of work is 573 Sqys; and the cost for the entire project is $55,000 dollars - that is nearly $96 per sqy. In the past, you all have been extremely generous when I made an appeal from this altar like when we needed a new altar top, a defibrillator and so on. This is a much larger project and I request that you all come together and raise enough money to complete this project. By now you all might have received a letter from me, requesting your generous donation. It includes a donation envelope which you can drop in the regular collection basket or it can be mailed back to the office. Donation envelopes are available in the pews too, for visitors and for those who have not received the letter from me or if you have forgotten to bring your envelope today. *As of Tuesday October 3, we have raised nearly $ 7,000 for the project. We are hoping to raise $7500 to install an automatic door in the main entrance of St. John Vianney. This will allow those with physical challenges to easily access the entrance without struggling to hold the door open or attempt to prevent it from slamming shut on themselves or necessary equipment. Even if you cannot attend the 2017 Platinum Dinner, you can still donate to our Fund-A-Need project. We have donation cards in the Mary Kane Commons at the ticket sale booth. Your generosity for this project is truly both needed and appreciated. The card club is going on a field trip. We will be going to Saint Patrick's Church in Inver Grove Heights on Tuesday October 10 at 12:00 for lunch, ($5.00) and then stay for Bingo. All are welcome to join us. Jesus as our Model Archbishop Hebda wrote in the Catholic Spirit that he is encouraged by the number of high-quality opportunities for Bible study being offered throughout the diocese this fall. Are you aware Scripture study known as the Forum meets here at SJV every Sunday at 9:30 AM in the second floor conference room. It is facilitated by Tom Ryan with post graduate theological studies from The School of Divinity at University of St. Thomas. Reflections are based on the readings of the Sunday and the homily. Catholic social teaching, reflection on economic, political and cultural challenges, restorative and distributive justice, all draw from the wisdom of the Church and become part of the discussions.
