2 FAITH Powerful Catholic Women... Ursulines of New Orleans: The Nuns Who Tamed the "Devil s Empire" For almost as long as New Orleans has existed, the Ursuline nuns have been part of it. Nine years after New Orleans founding, twelve Ursulines arrived to put their stamp on the city. They treated the sick and were dedicated to the education of young women, founding the first Catholic school in the US. They welcomed Acadians after the British banished them from Canada, and they treated American and British forces after the Battle of New Orleans. It was five AM one August morning in 1727, when two canoes carrying twelve Ursuline nuns, precariously balanced on top of their belongings, glided up the Mississippi River. Having set sail from France five months earlier, the young French nuns deboarded the craft and began a legendary apostolate. New Orleans in 1727 was a community of enslaved people, soldiers, and societal misfits, a population sprinkled with only a few skilled laborers and wealthy land-grant recipients. France s finest urban troublemakers were routinely rounded up and shipped off in hopes that they would make Louisiana a profitable venture. Those early settlers enthusiastically nurtured their vices instead, while feasting on giant river catfish, fighting off mosquitos and natives, and dying of fever and flux. Enter the Ursulines. The tone of the city is best described in a letter which one of the sisters wrote home in 1728, a year after her arrival: "In the end, the devil has a great empire here, but this does not take away from us the hope of destroying him, with God s love." And in the same letter: " not only do debauchery, bad faith and all the other vices reign here more than in any oth er place, but they do so in abundance." At the express request of colonial administrator, Jacques de la Chaise, the sisters were sent by their superiors in order to care for the sick of the community. This they did with such skill that before long the nuns had sole charge of the hospital, which usually contained thirty to forty soldiers, but they didn t stop there. For the Ursulines, the idea of converting America s native populations to Catholicism was the height of ecstasy. They set about doing so at once. Their primary mission was, in fact, the Catholic education of females. In this pursuit, their efforts and success cannot be overstated (At one point in the eighteenth century, more women than men were able to read and write, an extremely unusual situation in colonial America). The nuns also took in dozens of orphans and welcomed both Native Americans and Africans who began showing up in their corner of town for t he free catechism classes during the day This image, The Landing of the Ursulines, is the only glimpse of New Orleans taken in that early period. Madeleine Hauchard, a young novice at the time (wearing a tall novice's cap and holding the cat she actually brought all the way from France) made this sketch of the event. It was no-girl-left-behind as the nuns touched the lives of the haves and have-nots, whites and blacks, the free and the enslaved, and imbued them all with the unifying and salvific balm of Catholicism.. And all this from behind cloister walls! The day the nuns moved from their first humble abode to a proper convent built by the Indian Company, and which had been under construction for their first seven years, they paraded through the streets with the children of their orphanage and the day school pupils, followed by 40 of the principal ladies of the city, bearing torches; next 20 young girls, robed and veiled in purest white, and 12 others, representing Saint Ursula and her 11,000 companions. The young lady who impersonated Saint Ursula wore a fine robe and a silver mantle. Her crown glittered with pearls and diamonds, and a veil of the richest lace fell about her in graceful folds. She bor e in her hand a heart pierced with arrows,! made with wondrous skill. Children arrayed as angels surrounded her, and waved palm branches, emblematic of the glorious victory won by heroic virgin martyrs, whom they had the honor to represent. At the end of the procession came the nuns with lighted tapers, and their dedicated clergy carrying a rich canopy, under which the most Blessed Sacrament was born in triumph. Soldiers moved in single file on either side of the procession. Hymns were chanted by all, to the accompaniment meant of fifes and drums. This moving panorama of light, sound and beauty wound through the city and filed gracefully down the isle of the new convent s church, the soldiers kneeling and presenting arms to honor their King. Benediction concluded the procession, and the nuns were home.
3 FAITH & FUN Continued from Page 2... "Thus did we enter our new abode," writes one of the sist ers, "amid the chiming of bells, the music of fifes and drums, and the singing of praise and thanksgiving to our heavenly Father, whose loving Providence has lavished on us so many favors." Out of the public eye, the Ursulines facilitated the creation of a large Catholic community and an integrated congregation. According to one historian, New Orleans multiracial Catholic church "did not know congregational segregation until the era of Jim Crow in the late nineteenth century." Over the course of the eighteenth century, the nuns worked to lay a stable foundation of healthy, educated Catholics for the growing city, and acted as a safety net when families failed through death, poverty, or violence to carry out the tasks society asked of them. They stayed through yellow fever epidemics that killed thousands. They hunkered down when cannons roared and blood flowed during the War of 1812, du ring which they excelled as nurses at the military hospital. Through! fire and flood, the Ursuline nuns endured in this city for three centuries. The Ursulines still maintain a presence in the city they have nurtured for nearly 300 years. Most notably, they operate Ursuline Academy in Uptown New Orleans for about 750 girls, starting with preschool and continuing through high school. It is the oldest continuouslyoperating school for girls and the oldest Catholic school in the United States.
