1 THE BEACON From the Pastor Years ago my family and my Uncle s family took a cross country vacation together. We drove out to Yellowstone together making stops along the way, it was the longest vacation I ever went on, lasting about a month. Along the way every time we passed a Bob Evans restaurant my Uncle would comment about how he would never eat at one of those again. Apparently shortly before the trip he had been to one and received poor service and decided he would never go back. The funny thing is over twenty years later I have still never been back to a Bob Evans either. The grudge held against the restaurant chain is something that stuck with me, though I have never really stopped to think about it before. Who knows maybe I d really like it, and I m sure at some point in the last twenty years it would have been convenient to have eaten at one. On top of that I am all but positive that whoever was responsible for the poor service my Uncle received is no longer working at a Bob Evans. The truth is I suppose grudges stick with us, they are hard to shake. They can stick with us and affect us in ways big or small and sometimes we don t even realize it. What made me think of this after all these years was reading a short passage from Leviticus. Leviticus 25:10 10 And you shall hallow the fiftieth year and you shall proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you: you shall return, every one of you, to your property and every one of you to your family. What this passage is declaring is a year of Jubilee. A celebration every fifty years in which all debts are forgiven and all slaves are set free. It was a major celebration in Israel and one of the prime ways in which people lived out God s mercy. You can imagine how liberating it would have been for the debtor and the slave. We of course have our own form of jubilee. Jesus set us free from the debt of sin, from the slavery to sin. What at one time was a once in fifty year celebration has become our new reality. At the same time I think this idea of forgiving debts is one which we ought to revisit. My relationship with Bob Evans is one of debt. My family came to believe we were owed better service and that debt has been carefully accounted for years. In the end that grudge that debt is something that has helped no one and only served to inconvenience and annoy. Think of the debts you owe and the debts that are owed you, not the financial one but the ones of broken relationship. Do those debts help or are they just a source of annoyance, inconvenience and frustration. Sure it is important to remember those people who hurt you and those people who create an unsafe situation and to make sure you aren t hurt or unsafe again, but most debts are different. Most debts only serve to bind us to our anger, hurt and pain, most debts would be better off forgiven. Our debts of broken relationship only serve to keep us away from our friends, our family or our Church. We are worried about what we owe or are owed, so worried that we miss what could be. How many people are missing from our lives and our pews because of some grudge which simply doesn t matter anymore? I m going to declare a year of Jubilee for myself, I m going to forgive old grudges, I hope you will join me and declare a year of jubilee for yourself as well. I for one am going to begin by going out to dinner, if you need me I ll be at Bob Evans. Peace, Pastor Jamie

Akron's Celebration Committee is planning a 3-day celebration with most activities taking place in Veteran's Park - Buell Street, but Trinity will only take part on Friday, July 4th in Russell Park. It has been decided this would be the best way to go and to meet more people as most of the activities on the Fourth are in town itself. You are asked to watch for the signup sheet to appear to see where you might be able to help through donations of food items and perhaps a shift at the stand. This is a great time to visit with the community folks as well as to take time to visit with your church family members whom you do not have the opportunity to on a Sunday morning. Many thanks to all who took part in this year s Adopt-A- Highway cleanup of South Newstead Road. Trinity has participated in this program since 2001 when our youth, under the leadership of Pastor Ruth Hetland, first did it as a community service project. FOOD PANTRY The Food Pantry is in need of Breakfast Cereals, Peanut Butter & Jelly, Cans of Vegetables & Fruit, Cans of Tuna Fish, Pasta & Sauce, Soups, Beans, Canned Pasta, Graham Crackers, and Saltines. There is a basket at the back of the church for your donations. Thank you!!!

3 Trinity s Sunday School Trinity's Sunday School is rapidly coming to a close for the summer months. Sunday, June 15th will be the last day for this term, closing with some outdoor activities, snacks,. etc. The students have been learning about Old Testament people who have played a very important time in preparing for the coming of our Lord and Savior. They have shared in collections for Haiti, the City Mission, and our local Food Pantry. The students are always invited to share in prayers for others, family members, pets, or friends during the Opening Time of Bible stories, offering receiving, saying the 23rd Psalm, and Prayer Time. Many thanks to the staff - Samantha Francis, Jessica Hellenbach, Christine Johnson, Lisa Kaminski, Laura Kropelin, Mike & Paula Kropelin, Amanda Krysiak, Rachel Neyman,, & Elaine Zeitler for their faithfulness working with the students each week. We are all looking forward to another great year as we gather on Rally Day (kick-off for 2014 & 2015) on Sunday, September 7th. Meanwhile, we pray all will have a safe and enjoyable summer. In 1939, Lutherans all across the United States banded together to reach out to assist Lutheran refugees fleeing Nazi Germany. Creating Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) to organize their efforts, they welcomed these new Americans and walked with them as they began their new lives in the United States. Seventy five years later, LIRS has directly resettled over 500,000 migrants and refugees in the U.S., extending the love and hospitality of this great nation. Upstate New York has been shaped by a series of different migrations throughout the centuries. Our history here goes back to Dutch, Palatine, German, and Swedish settlements among many others. Welcoming the immigrant is part and parcel of who we are as the church. Several of our congregations have ministries to and with those who were once refugees. Here s an opportunity to learn more and perhaps to join hands with others who Stand for Welcome. It s another way that God is changing lives. On Sunday, June 22, the 75 th anniversary of LIRS will be celebrated. Participate by: 1. Lifting up refugees in your prayers 2. Telling stories 3. Having a learning event 4. Taking an offering for LIRS To help you, your church, or group more fully experience World Refugee Day, LIRS will send you a free Refugee Sunday Kit when you request one today. God s Work. Our Hands. Day Camp is a unique blend of outdoor ministry, congregational ministry, and community outreach. More specifically, Day Camp is an evangelical summer ministry that targets church and community youth who will be entering grades three through eight the following fall. The purpose of Day Camp is to provide congregations with a quality Christian outdoor ministry experience with a strong evangelism and outreach component at their site. While we hope to get young people excited about camping, our bigger priority is to get them involved in congregational ministry. This is a joint venture of several area Churches. The trained and professional day camp staff will lead day camps one week at a time at a time at the various sites with the goal of providing as many opportunities as possible for youth to be a part of this one week experience. Here at Trinity our week will be July 28 th through August 1 st. A typical day camp schedule is from 9:00am to 3:30pm. Drop-off and pick-up times will be an hour before and after programming starts to accommodate working families. Wednesday nights will be family cookout night! The day camp program is based on role modeling, relationship building between camper and staff, and experiential education with less emphasis on classroom teaching. More specifically, Impact Day Camp will focus on five CAMP VALUES which include caring, integrity, honesty, equality, and social justice. These are key core values for a leader in an ever changing world.
