ST BENEDICT S CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL 3 9 CENTRAL AVENUE BURWOOD St Benedict s Primary School Burwood During our Information Evenings, parents were also asked to nominate an address that they were happy to have shared on a friendship list for their child s class. Without parental or caregiver consent to share addresses, we are unable to share any contact details with other members of our community. If you were Leadership Day Newsletter Number 20 28th June 2018 May the holiday be for us a time of rest and recreation to help restore us and re-create us in your image and likeness, as we enjoy more of the love and presence of our families, on whom we ask your blessing. Amen. Good Luck This week, we say a fond farewell to Grace Parker as she begins her maternity leave. As a school community I know that you will join with me to wish Grace and Adrian all the best for the arrival of their beautiful baby girl. I would also like to thank Grace for all of her work with and care of our students over the last 18 months. I look forward to sharing the exciting news of her beautiful little girl s arrival in Term Three. Poker Night Thank you to all of our amazing dads who worked to make our Poker Night an amazing success. This night is not only a great way for our dads and other members of our community to enjoy a game or two of poker but to also connect with each other. Congratulations to our overall winner and thank you also to Graham Watt, our local state member, for supporting this event. Our current estimate of fundraising from the night is just over $3,100. Reports, Learning Folios and Student/Parent/Teacher Conversations Yesterday, all students should have brought home their Semester One Reports and Learning Folios. Our Learning Folios are designed to elaborate on our checklists and comments contained within our reports. Thank you to our teachers for the time they have taken to ensure that your child s report is a true reflection of his/her learning and for preparing the students learning folios.

Our Student/Parent/Teacher conversations will be held in Week Two of Term Three on Thursday 26th June. During these conversations, your child will reflect on his/her Semester One goal and then share his/her Semester Two goal with you. To support these conversations, please bring your child s Learning Folio to these conversations. After feedback from our Term One conversations, these conversations will involve our students for 5 minutes with a focus on his/her learning goal for Semester Two and then 5 minutes for parents or caregivers to meet with your child s classroom teacher to discuss any questions or concerns that you have. Information in relation to making bookings for our Conversations will sent home with all students on Friday 29th June. Environment Leaders It is wonderful to have student leaders who have a passion for a cause and are willing to look into a variety of ways to improve our school and make us more sustainable. Our Environment Leaders wrote a letter to Bunnings Box Hill asking for their support to create a vegetable garden. It was wonderful to receive a reply from Laura at Bunnings as well as seeds, plant food, a garden stake and a soccer ball. We look forward to creating our vegetable garden during Term Three and selling our produce to members of our community. Our Environment Leaders have also taken the initiative to introduce General, Recycling and Compost bins to each of our classrooms. Each class will receive a poster outlining what can be placed in each bin and all of our labelled bins will be ready for use in Term Three. Respectful Relationships Celebration Last Friday, Melanie Norton and four of our Year Five/Six students represented St Benedict s at the Respectful Relationships Celebration Day. This was an opportunity for our students to meet students from other schools who are part of this initiative as well as hearing from some amazing speakers. Josh, Madeline, Aileen and Finlay have shared some insights from their day further on in our newsletter. Soccer Day Just a reminder to wear your favourite soccer colours to school tomorrow and bring along a gold coin donation. All money raised will go to Disability Sport and Recreation. I hope that everyone in our community has a restful and safe holiday and I look forward to a productive and exciting Term Three which begins on Monday 16th July. Meredith Bennett Principal

Education in Faith First Holy Communion Please continue to keep the First Holy Communion candidates in your prayers. Human dimensions of the Eucharist Like all the sacraments the Eucharist has parallels in ordinary human experience and yet expands and transcends every human experience. It is an inexhaustible source of significance. In no particular order it is about: remembering and offering proclaiming and listening giving praise and thanks forgiveness and reconciliation hungering and being fed the sacrificial death of Jesus and his resurrection our own death and resurrection. receiving the body of Christ being the Body of Christ identifying with those who suffer justice and the love of others the presence and absence of Christ being gathered together and being sent out the past and the future crystallised in the present moment the life of this world and the life of the world to come Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B Gospel: Mark 5: Jesus heals Jairus daughter Gospel Reflection This week s gospel passage presents two miracle accounts, one, in effect, interrupting or being framed by the other. Jesus is approached by the synagogue official, Jairus, to come and heal his dying daughter. In the milling and surging crowd, Jesus suddenly becomes aware of being touched by someone. The story of the woman with a haemorrhage is a story of social and religious isolation as much as it is a story of illness and pain. Because of the Jewish prohibitions against blood, the woman would have been regarded as permanently impure and unclean. She would have been unable to engage in any worship; she could not touch another person without also making them unclean; she was effectively outcast for the 12 years of her illness. She knew it would be forbidden for her to touch Jesus openly but took her chances of being unobserved in the crowd she risked all on the belief that even touching Jesus cloak might heal her. Jesus immediately stopped and drew attention to the woman. By doing so he made it clear to her that it was her faith that had healed her (a feature of healing stories in the Gospel of Mark). His actions also made it clear to the crowd that she was now healed and should not be shunned any longer; she was publicly declared fit to re-enter society and religious participation. After 12 years of virtual non-existence, the woman was now able to begin her life again. The delay, however, meant that Jairus daughter was dead by the time Jesus arrived. Undeterred, Jesus performs another miracle and raises the girl from death. The girl was 12 years old the same 12 years the woman suffered with a haemorrhage and now she too was able to begin her life again. There is a neatness and a completeness about the two stories. From the perspective of Jairus What a whirlwind of emotions Jairus must have gone through. His daughter was sick and getting worse but Jesus had left the region and travelled across the Sea of Galilee. Suddenly, Jairus heard that Jesus had returned! He raced to Jesus and begged him to save his daughter. What joy when Jesus set out to do so! But Jesus was slowed by the crowd and then came to a complete stop and spoke to some woman. Didn t he know this was urgent? Then the news came that the little girl was dead no need to hurry now. Finally, unbelievable relief and joy: Jesus raises the little girl and reunites her with her parents. Gospel Focus A lesson in faith Although Jairus obviously believed that Jesus might be able to do something to help heal his daughter, once news came that she had died he needed a strong reminder from Jesus to not be afraid and to have faith. Was it the example of the woman s faith in Jesus that gave Jairus the strength to continue to believe? When they arrive at the house the mourners laugh at Jesus and are consequently excluded from witnessing the miraculous raising. Since they don t have faith, they are not given the opportunity to witness faith in action. 5 Learning and Teaching Year Three/Four News Our last two weeks of term have been busy in the Year Three/Four area. On Wednesday last week the Year Three/Four students were invited to Emmaus College, Springvale Campus, where they participated in netball and soccer clinics. On arrival we were greeted by two of our ex-students, Xavier and Giordano, and taken to an auditorium where we were given some question and answer time with some Year 7 students. The students were also provided with a BBQ sausage, box drink and a packet of chips for lunch! The well organised clinics were run by the Year 9 students of Emmaus. It was a great experience. Last Friday, Ms Brooks and all the Year Three/Four girls attended a secondary experience day at Avila College, Mount Waverley. One of our students has shared her experiences of the day: On Friday the Year Three/Four girls went to Avila. We did A prayer in the morning Recess Had Just Dance in the gym Had a homeroom lesson Lunch Watched some performances We had a great time. I learnt that high school can be much bigger than primary school and in high school you move around a lot. Rose H, Year Four Whilst the girls were at Avila the boys had a busy and active day with Miss Campbell at school that involved some designing, cooking and sport. On both occasions the students were a credit to our school. It was a pleasure taking them out for these special events. Next term our Year Four students will be receiving the Sacrament of First Holy Communion. All Year Four parents are asked to return the note sent home (regarding attending events and preparation) by tomorrow please. Please remember to attend one of the First Holy Communion Commitment Masses on the weekend of July 14th and 15th July. The Sunday Mass times are 10am and 5pm. Mary Brooks, Sophie Campbell or Meredith Bennett will be at one of these Masses. Sadly, we farewell two students in Year Three/Four B at the end of this term. We wish Alan Y and Eric C all the best at their new schools. Semester One Reports and Student Portfolios will have made their way home to you yesterday. The students have completed an incredible amount of work throughout this semester and we hope they all enjoy a well earned holiday. We also hope that parents have some time to relax and recharge before we begin Semester Two refreshed and ready to do it all again! Thank you to all parents and caregivers for your ongoing support and in particular parents who have been able to give some of their own time to assist us. Ms Mary Brooks and Miss Sophie Campbell

Learning and Teaching cont d Digital Technologies - Algorithms In Digital Technologies we use algorithms to help us create a solution to a problem. The Victorian Curriculum defines an algorithm as a description of the steps and decisions required to solve a problem. VCAA Digital Technologies Glossary The algorithm is the forerunner to programming. It is the breaking down of a problem into a series of smaller, manageable steps. At the Junior level this includes sequencing a set of instructions (often in pictures), creating a slideshow or timeline or giving instructions to real or virtual robots, such as Bee Bots. BeeBot App Bee Bots In Years Three and Four the students begin to look at problems which involve decisions (branching) and may require user input. They look at using the same set of instructions with different sets of data (playing a Guess My Number game) and how to incorporate different types of data into one set of instructions, such as how to include pictures and sound in a video. They begin to investigate different ways to come to the same solution. This term the students followed a verbal algorithm to create a piece of artwork, based on the works of American artist Sol LeWitt ( ). In Years Five and Six the students begin to look at problems which involve not only branching, but iteration (loops or repeating). As well as representing their sequences of steps in English they are introduced to flowcharts, so their algorithms can be presented diagramatically. By using flowcharting conventions they are able to begin to test each others flowcharts and make suggestions of modifications and improvements. Year Three and Four Based on the artwork of American Artist Sol LeWitt ( ) the students listened to the following set of instructions to execute this piece of wall art. Drawing Instructions You will need a blue, red, yellow and green writing tool. Write your name on the back of the paper. Draw a red line diagonally through the paper. Draw 3 wavy green lines through the middle of the page. Draw a blue line from the top middle to the bottom middle. Draw yellow lines radiating from the centre. Colour the corners green. Draw 2 red lines on each side of the blue line. Draw a blue line above the green lines. Draw a red line below the green line

Learning and Teaching cont d Environment Update How To Stop Global Warming Speak Up! This is how we can all help stop global warming. One of the biggest ways to help stop global warming is speaking up, talking to our friends and family and making sure our representatives are making good decisions. Power Your Home With Renewable Energy Choose a company that generates at least half its power from wind or solar and has been certified by Green-e Energy an organization that renews energy options. Some ways to power your home with renewable energy are Rooftop solar panels - This is probably the most common and obvious method, if you're looking into renewable power. Wind turbines - Wind turbines are most commonly found in wind farms or floating offshore, but if you have enough real estate you can install a small wind turbine on your property to power your home. Solar ovens - Solar ovens are typically a science fair project, but ovens actually use quite a bit of electricity. Using the sun to passively heat your food is a good way to get started in the world of renewable energy. Solar water heating - Solar power doesn't just have to generate electricity. You can also use the power of the sun to heat your home. Solar air conditioning - It might seem strange to use heat from the sun to cool your home, but that's exactly what solar air conditioning does. Reduce Water Waste These are some ways to conserve water at home: Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth Reuse your pasta cooking liquid Cut your showers short Don't run the dishwasher machine until it's full Install a rain tank Hand washing a lot of dishes Use less electricity Only shower once a day. Actually Eat The Food You Buy Don't just buy food because you THINK you will need it because you will most likely throw it out. In Australia approximately $8 billion worth of edible food is thrown away every year. These are eight ways to stop buying food that you don't need: 1. Make a meal plan a week 2. Make a shopping list and only buy what you need 3. Food shop more often 4. Understand sell by dates 5. Batch cook 6. Find another use for food 7. Use or freeze leftovers 8. Compost. Buy Better Bulbs LED light bulbs use up to 80 percent less energy than conventional incandescents. They re also cheaper in the long run. A 10-watt LED that replaces your traditional 60-watt bulb will save you $125 over the lightbulb life

Learning and Teaching cont d Respectful Relationships Celebration On Friday we went to Camberwell Grammar School to attend the Respectful Relationships Celebration. We heard other students share how they have been learning about Respectful Relationships in their School and now have lots of ideas for how we can do this at St Benedict s as well. Bree Davey, Captain of the Carlton AFLW team, came to share her story about the challenges she faces as a woman playing football and her journey going from Auskick to Soccer and back to AFL. Overall it was a great day and we learnt lots of new things. Sport Fundraiser This Friday 29th of June, students are invited to wear a outfit or colours that represent the Soccer World Cup or your favourite soccer team. If you wear soccer colours please bring a gold coin donation. Our donations will help children with disabilities who are unable to play sport and the money raised will go to Disability Sport & Recreation. Your donation would be great! Eli and Luke.
