Announcements Sunday school today The visit of the wise men as recorded in Matthew 2 is the lesson today for both Sunday school and the adult Bible class. Just as the wise men came to Bethlehem to see the Savior and honor Him, so we come to church to see the Savior in His Word and Sacraments. Discuss with your children: How are we sometimes like Herod? How may we be like the wise men? Make the most of Lent We will begin Lent this Wednesday with an Ash Wednesday communion service at 7 p.m. The season provides us another opportunity to dwell on the unmatched love of God which moved Him to send His Son to suffer hell in our place on the cross, in order that we might be saved. A Lent to Remember: This is the theme for our midweek services. Each week we will look at something God remembers or something He causes us to remember in regard to Jesus saving work. Daily Rest: A new daily devotional magazine has just been published by the CLC. A free copy is available for each household in the congregation. Please take one home today. 4 Prayer: P: O triune God, You found Your servant Moses in the wilderness and led him back to Egypt to rescue Your people Israel, bringing them to the threshold of the Promised Land. Grant that as Moses trusted Your promises at the edge of life and death, we also trust You in all things; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns in communion and love with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Words of Institution: Distribution hymn 305 (red hymnal): Soul, Adorn Thyself with Gladness The Lord s Prayer: Epistle lesson: 2 Corinthians 4:3-6.Through the preaching and hearing of the Word, the brilliant glory of Jesus shines into our hearts and lives. But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus sake. For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Gospel lesson: Luke 9:28-36.On the Mount of Transfiguration we see a glimpse of the glory that was hidden during Jesus life on earth. Now it came to pass, about eight days after these sayings, that He took Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray. As He prayed, the appearance of His face was altered, and His robe became white and glistening. And behold, two men talked with Him, who were Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of His decease which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. But Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep; and when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men who stood with Him. Then it happened, as they were parting from Him, that Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah not knowing what he said. While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were fearful as they entered the cloud. And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is My beloved Son. Hear Him! When the voice had ceased, Jesus was found alone. But they kept quiet, and told no one in those days any of the things they had seen. Nunc Dimittis: O Lord, now let Your servant Depart in heav nly peace, For I have seen the glory Of Your redeeming grace: A light to lead the Gentiles Unto Your holy hill, The glory of Your people, Your chosen Israel. P: It is truly good, right, and beneficial that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who at His transfiguration revealed His glory to His disciples that they might be strengthened to proclaim His cross and resurrection, and with all believers look forward to the glory of life everlasting. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: The Nicene Creed: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Hymn 719 (Worship Supplement): Jesus on the Mountain Peak Sermon: Deuteronomy 34:1-12 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is across from Jericho. And the LORD showed him all the land of Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, the South, and the plain of the Valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. Then the LORD said to him, This is the land of which I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, I will give it to your descendants. I have caused you to see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there. So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD. And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth Peor; but no one knows his grave to this day. Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died. His eyes were not dim nor his natural vigor diminished. And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. So the days of weeping and mourning for Moses ended. Now Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; so the children of Israel heeded him, and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. But since then there has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face, in all the signs and wonders which the LORD sent him to do in the 7 4

6 land of Egypt, before Pharaoh, before all his servants, and in all his land, and by all that mighty power and all the great terror which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel. Look Farther Than Your Eyes Can See! I. It s a difficult climb. II. It s an awesome view. Prayer of the Church (Minute of silence for personal prayer and reflection) P: Lord of love, living on our own terms, our lives are unmanageable and would certainly end in eternal disaster. Grant that by Your Word and Spirit we continually be transformed, trusting in Jesus who was transfigured in the sight of Peter, James, and John. Lord, in Your mercy, P: Lord of love, the governments of our world are instituted by You for the protection and earthly wellbeing of all people. Grant that our elected and appointed officials be moved by Your love to govern wisely that all people may dwell in peace. Lord, in Your mercy, P: Lord of love, there are many who are weak and sick among us and within our circles of family and friends. There are those who grieve. We pray in behalf of the family of Roy Lillo, whom you have received safely home to Yourself in glory. Through Your Word and the words of fellow believers remind them that Jesus is the resurrection and the life, and that weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning. Remember for good all sufferers. Grant them Your help, healing, comfort, and assurance that You will never leave nor forsake them. Lord, in Your mercy, P: Lord of love, You give us Your love in a visible, tangible way in Your holy Supper. May Jesus body and blood refresh our weary souls and strengthen us for the journey ahead. Lord, in Your mercy, P: Lord of love, amidst the cares of everyday life, we look forward to the day when You will call us and all people to rise according to Your promise. Grant us safe travel on the path You have laid out for us today, this week, and for the rest of our time of grace.
