Spring is normally regarded as a time for abundant growth and the recent activities of the lodge have certainly reflected this. First, several fellowcrafts have completed their second degree proficiencies and now stand ready to be raised to the sublime degree of master mason. This gives me enormous joy, as moving candidates through the degrees was, and still is, one of the primary goals that I stated this year would be about. Please continue to look at the calendar of events to see when the degrees will be. It is always appreciated when any brother can attend a degree. No fewer than six potential candidates were present. These were all young men hard working and well educated who knew very little or nothing at all about masonry. Nevertheless, the lodge graciously hosted them and all guests were informed that they were being hosted by the Alhambra Masonic Lodge. This is exactly what we as a lodge need. Since we are not able to recruit directly, the best course of action has always been to go into the community and make Masonry known to the public. We must trust that good men looking to serve the community will come knocking once they see that we are not some secret society of sorcerers or practitioners of the dark arts. The next event to look forward to will be the raising of Brother Dan Trinh, to be held on July 27. The raising of Brother Trinh should follow the raising of Brother Douglas Molina, and should be taken as a sign of the strength of Alhambra Lodge going forward into the future. 3 2015 Senior Warden s Message. From the West Happy Birthday, America! First and foremost, I would like to remind everybody to be safe and enjoy the day as we celebrate the birth of this wonderful nation. As we start the second half of this Masonic year, I would like to invite the Brethren, with the permission of our Worshipful Master, who are interested in becoming a Lodge officer for 2016 Masonic year, to a meeting on July 20, 2015 at 6:30 PM. All Lodge Past Masters are also invited and most welcome to attend this meeting. I will be presenting a preliminary or draft officer s line for the ensuing Masonic year. 4 Happy 4th of July, Brethren. From the South This being the month of July, we are reminded that this is the anniversary of our Declaration of Independence. Our earlier Brethren took an active part in the creation and formation of the nation which owes its being to this document. We should be proud that members of our Masonic Craft were very much an integral part of this movement for the liberation of men. It is a well known historical fact that the Masonic participants in the achievement of American Liberty were greatly disproportioned to the total membership of the Craft at that period. Let us all take an active part in showing the world that we are anxious to keep this wonderful nation free, as our founding Brethren were. Time flies so fast. I can still remember when i joined the fraternity of Freemasonry thirty years ago. All my non-masonic friends were very curious and kept asking me what happened during my initiation, passing, raising "What did they do to you?" was questioned by all. These were friends and I didn't want to curt with them and say" none of your business" even though i knew many of them were testing me to see how much I could say. So i told them this --- Masonry is my friend and Freemasonry is a way of life---- and if you tell a secret and he betrays your trust and tells someone else your secret, he is no longer your friend. I assured them that none of our secrets were of any conspiracy or plots to overthrow our government. Finally, the month of July is a very special month in my life. I was born on July 5 and was passed to the degree of Fellowcraft and raised as a Master Mason in this month.- the month that i was given the LIFE and saw the LIGHT in Freemasonry. 5 Overview Alhambra Masonic Lodge Mission Statement for the Year 2015 Forth of July Observance In 1777, thirteen gunshots were fired in salute, once at morning and once again as evening fell, on July 4 in Bristol, Rhode Island. Philadelphia celebrated the first anniversary in a manner a modern American would find quite familiar: an official dinner for the Continental Congress, toasts, 13-gun salutes, speeches, prayers, music, parades, troop reviews, and fireworks. Ships were decked with red, white, and blue bunting.[13] In 1778, from his headquarters at Ross Hall, near New Brunswick, New Jersey, General George Washington marked July 4 with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute (feu de joie). Across the Atlantic Ocean, ambassadors John Adams and Benjamin Franklin held a dinner for their fellow Americans in Paris, France.[14] In 1779, July 4 fell on a Sunday. The holiday was celebrated on Monday, July 5.[14] In 1781 the Massachusetts General Court became the first state legislature to recognize July 4 as a state celebration.[14] In 1783, Moravians in Salem, North Carolina, held a celebration of July 4 with a challenging music program assembled by Johann Friedrich Peter. This work was titled "The Psalm of Joy." This is recognized as the first recorded celebration and is still celebrated there today.[15] In 1791 the first recorded use of the name "Independence Day" occurred.[citation needed] In 1870, the U.S. Congress made Independence Day an unpaid holiday for federal employees.[16] In 1938, Congress changed Independence Day to a paid federal holiday.[17] The mission of the Lodge for the 2015 year will be to make the Lodge a center for the promotion of the arts and humanities by pursuing the ancient tradition of patronage in order to improve community involvement, to provide a form of charity, and to attract new members to the craft. Lodge Events We will seek to make our Lodge a new Athens. The events of the Lodge held throughout the year will focus on artistic and intellectual pursuits. Specifically, as of right now there are four events that are currently on the calendar (subject to change as needed): - An outing to the Norton-Simon Museum. - An outing to a live theatrical performance. - A poetry/literature reading to be held at the Lodge. - An outing to hear Messiah in concert. Furthermore, the practice of providing entertainment during the stated meeting dinners will be resumed. This will provide an excellent opportunity to help support new musicians in the community and will be considered a modest form of charity work. Degrees The lodge will seek to improve the number of degrees held over the course of the year. Entered Apprentices and Fellowcrafts will be provided with proper coaching and will be encouraged to give their proficiencies as soon as they are confident that they can do so. Furthermore, the Officers will be encouraged to be enthusiastic about performing degrees and degrees will not be postponed or put off for excessive periods of time. Trestle Board/Website The quality of the trestle board and the website being the primary sources of information in and about the Lodge will be improved. Specifically, the trestle board will be sent out in a timely manner and the website will be updated regularly to reflect the current condition of the Lodge. 5
