John 14:16 17 PEOPLE OF HOPE Throughout this Easter season the readings have drawn us into the experience of the early church. We have tasted the excitement and zeal of the first Christians. Now, with them, we listen to the words of Saint Peter, who reminds us that when people notice that we are people of hope, we should be ready to explain why. This challenges us. Do others even notice that we are people of hope? In a world often marked by cynicism and hopelessness, do we stand out as people who offer hope and reassurance to others? In today s Gospel Jesus promises that when he leaves the earth he will not leave us orphaned. Today he promises to send his Advocate, the Spirit of truth who will be with us always. Let us acknowledge the presence of the Holy Spirit and ask the Spirit to make us people of hope. It is also the discovery and living out the Christian message. The next stage of entering the Church is a process called mystagogy. Mystagogy is a Greek word which means mystery. In the early Church, the Catholic Christian community used the fifty days from Easter to Pentecost to explain the sacraments celebrated at the Easter Vigil. This was a time for the converts into the Catholic Christian faith to gain a deeper understanding of God s word, the sacraments and commitment to their faith. It is a time for the neophytes to gather for prayer and exploration of the Catholic faith. These new converts will redirect their focus from learning to living their faith. This is a time to participate more fully into the life of the parish. In this way these converts to the faith will be nourished and grow as members of the Catholic Church. This is an ongoing conversion. Conversion means to change or turn around. Conversion is the call to grow in faith and to live out that faith. We want to deepen our relationship with God and this Church He gave us. The first step in this conversion process is to turn to Jesus Christ and accept Him as Our Lord and Savior. In doing this we want to live the life of faith in the community of God s people, the Church. This first step of turning toward God is called initial conversion. It may be a moving sudden experience, or happen gradually over a period of years.

If you re interested, please contact the Parish Office and ask for Maryann. Thank you! Ascension of Our Lord is a Holy Day of Obligation. This day celebrates the day that Christ, in the presence of His apostles, ascended bodily into Heaven. The Ascension occurred on the 40th day of Easter, so it falls on a Thursday, and is often called Ascension Thursday, however, in most dioceses, including all Florida dioceses, The Ascension has been transferred to the following Sunday, May 28 th. The Parish Office is closed MONDAY MAY 29 th Father Pat & Our Mass Choir would like to invite any & all to join us for an 11 Day Pilgrimage to Italy Sept 25 thru Oct 5, There will be a Papal audience while we are in Rome and we will be celebrating Mass each day in one of the Basilicas that we visit. Thank you for your generous support to our program. n today s Gospel, Jesus tells His disciples, Whoever has I my Commandments and observes them is the one who loves Me. And whoever loves Me will be loved by the Father, and I will love him and reveal Myself to him. In revealing Himself to us, Jesus is calling us to be His disciples. And being his disciples means that we must live our lives in His love regardless of the situations we find ourselves in from time to time. Think about parents called by God to nurture and support each other and to help each other overcome difficulty in their lives. They care for each other and their children especially when the children are sick and when they are hurting. And we know that concern for hurting children never ends, even when the kids become adults. And it becomes especially hard when it seems that all we can do is pray for them when they are suffering. This is real discipleship. And how about the call to serve the community? Think about the love shown by so many of our parishioners as they take Holy Communion to hospitals and nursing homes, collect clothes and food for the poor, and visit families in need. Think about the good work of the hundreds of parish volunteers who do so much for this parish. And finally, think about our call to discipleship in our places of work: Do we as teachers or clerks or construction workers; or as professional men and women, as sales people, whatever --- do we think of ourselves as disciples of Jesus Christ in the work place? Do we exercise the same level of virtue on the job as we do at home? Do we have the courage at home, in the community and in the workplace to be recognized as Christians --- as disciples of Jesus Christ? Put it another way. If acting out our Christian beliefs were to be a crime, would we be found guilty? Clearly, we are not all called by God in the same way. We are not all chosen to do the same thing. But make no mistake about it. We are all chosen by God for a purpose; and God reveals that purpose to us in a variety of ways --- and at different times throughout our lives. It all comes down to a matter of trust. Do we trust God enough to pray for His will to be revealed to us, and when it is, do we have the courage to follow it? It is in giving that we receive. Cost is $40.00 for children First though Sixth and FREE for Seventh through Twelfth, but pre-registration for all grades is necessary. If you would like to sign up your child for TOTUS TUUS VBS this summer, please contact the Youth Office or the Faith Formation Office. ========================================== Vacation Bible School - Registration Registration is now being taken for vacation bible school. The cost is $40.00 for students going into grades 1 st through 6 th. Additional siblings cost $ For students entering grades 7 th 12 th there is no cost. Vacation bible school for 7 th 12 th graders is July 16 th July 20 th 7:00 9:00 p.m. For grades 1 st 6 th it will be July 17 th -21 st 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m., please bring a lunch. Registration forms can be picked up at the office and on the information table. Please register by July 1 st. You do not have to be a parishioner at St. Joan of Arc to participate. Youth Group Selling White Crosses Youth Group is selling small white crosses that can be placed in your yard or garden. The small white crosses are a statement in answer to an atheist s complaint about two crosses on a bridge in a Michigan town. He requested that they be removed, and the town removed them. He then decided that since he was so successful with that, the city shield should also be changed since it had a cross on it along with other symbols that signify the city s Lutheran beginning. At that point, the residents decided they had had enough. Hundreds of residents made their opinions known by placing small crosses in their front yards. Seeing this quiet but powerful statement from the community, the man removed his complaint. Thanks to the St. Joan of Arc Knights of Columbus they are making the crosses, Youth Group is painting them and gets to keep the proceeds. The cost is $5.00 each. The cross is 12 inches high and 6 inches wide. At the bottom is a 6 inch rod that will go into the ground.
