We have hidden our lamps under tables; we have buried our talents out of fear; we have sought security in everything but you. Open our hearts as we follow your Son on the road to Jerusalem that we might comprehend your unchanging generosity, for you have withheld nothing from us. Each of us has traveled this past week with the Lord. We have in our own way experienced the burning bush, the pillar of fire, the ashes of spiritual exile, and the hands of healing love. The ashes and the dust, the darkness and confusion that are a part of our sojourn these we can only bear when you walk so closely by our side. Rejoice! For we are not alone in this wilderness of shadow and light. We have each other. We have the Lord in our midst. Trust in one another. Trust in God, for God has provided in the past and will surely provide again. Amen. Mr. D. How often we have found newness of life welling up in our lives like a fountain when we thought ourselves unable to go on. Yet we still doubt the future. All: March 11, 2012 Jesus said: If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, Give me a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water. O Lord, deep is the thirst of your people. The weariness of life is sometimes too much. Our sins, our sorrows, our griefs dwell closely with us each day of the journey. So many demands are upon us, so many distractions, so many unspoken fears. Jesus said: The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life. O Lord, give us that water that will end our thirst, renew and strengthen us. Clear our vision to see your playful and majestic hand continually at work in our lives and our world. Amen.

Happiness and fulfillment are promised to us from every bookstand, from every chattering television, from every smooth-talking guru who captures our fleeting and wandering attention. We buy, we accumulate, we seek, but if we are honest, we know that our hands are empty, our thirst unquenched. Jesus said: Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, Out of the believer s heart shall flow rivers of living water. These waters run deep in the soul, in the still, quiet place within where God waits, eternally patient, for us to come and rest. These waters abound where gentleness and tolerance shape our relationships, where kindness, acceptance, and forgiveness inform the small, daily gestures that make up our lives. Let us rest and be restored. Let us drink and be satisfied. Let us wash and be cleansed. Amen.

Come, listen for a word from our God. All: March 25, 2012 We hear God calling us in a far distant voice. We confess there have been times when we had nearly forgotten God s care for us. Be of good cheer! The Spirit breathes life into our dry bones. God offers hope when we have lost our way. Our souls wait for the refreshment God offers. Our spirits are filled with great expectation for our journey to the cross is nearly complete. Christ came as a light to all the world. Christ comes among us today to light our way. We hear the teacher calling for us. Christ unbinds us that we may see and believe. Come down, O Lord, and complete this journey with your people. Help us, O God, to remain diligent, attentive to the needs around us, and receptive to your power-infusing Spirit.

9 from the pastor from the pastor from the pastor I am pleased to share with you the good news that Drs. Scott and Dawn Kendrick, have given a $50, gift to Oakmont designated toward the work of the Oakmont Community Center in memory of Scott s parents, Dr. and Mrs. Wayne (Amelia) Kendrick. Scott and Dawn are interested in the gift being used toward the Medical Clinic needs, and any ministries directed for the unsheltered homeless, moving homeless persons toward acquiring an apartment (with needed deposits or subsidized rent for a period of time), and/or keeping the working poor in their homes if some emergency arises that may find them facing eviction. Many of you will remember that Dr. Wayne Kendrick, prior to his death in 1999, was a physician in our community and one of the founding partners in Eastern Nephrology Associates in Greenville. Wayne was an ordained Oakmont deacon, member of the Chancel Choir, and a participant in the first medical mission trip team from Oakmont that spent two weeks in the Ukraine in He had a great interest in local and global mission work. Amelia, who died in 2009, was an active participant in the women s spiritual formation group that I led for several years. During my tenure as Oakmont s Minister of Education and Youth, Amelia served as a chaperone on numerous youth trips and events. Scott and his brother Bill grew up at Oakmont, and they both are now doctors in the same practice their father helped to begin. Dawn is a pediatric and emergency medicine doctor at Vidant Medical Center. We are grateful to Scott and Dawn for the confidence expressed by this gift in Oakmont s compassion ministries in our community. We share with them in grateful memory of the life and ministry that Wayne and Amelia had with us in our congregation. The Oakmont Community Center Vision Team learned of this generous gift in their meeting in January. They have recommended to our Diaconate and that group has given its blessings in their January 29 th meeting that our congregation receive a love offering once again this year during our Easter worship services. Specifically, the Vision Team and Diaconate are challenging the Oakmont Church family as a minimum to match this $50,000 gift in memory of Wayne and Amelia for the work of the Oakmont Community Center. In addition, the Vision Team also is actively applying for some community and denominational grant money that may well provide another $50,000 of support for this growing and evolving ministry. I know you join me in gratitude for this generous gift, and in praise to God for His goodness and blessings in Oakmont s life and ministry. I hope you will begin praying about making this special gift during our Easter services. God is working in a mighty and powerful way at Oakmont. 10 Coaching Update from March 11, 2012 Summarized by Mission Statement Current Connecting lives with Christ as the center through reaching, growing, and going. New Connecting lives by following God s purpose through reaching, serving, going, and growing. Note: There was a suggestion to keep Christ as the center in this statement, which could be reflected as: Connecting Christ-centered lives by following God s purpose through reaching, serving, going, and growing (or maturing). Vision Statement In response to God-centered worship and continuing spiritual formation, we seek to be the dynamic hands and presence of Christ in the world around us, building community and developing relationships. Note: This group discussed that most vision statements have more specificity than this one does (compare with the Oakmont Community Center Vision Statement), but that we may have to wait for God s revelation before we can bring additional clarity to it. Core Values Community deepening relationships with God while building relationships with others face-to-face and through social media within and outside the four walls of the church. Prayer listening to God, discerning where He is at work, and acting in concert with God in obedience. Worship opening ourselves to God in praise and thanksgiving, confession, and hearing and responding to God s Word read and proclaimed through various acts and media such as music, celebrating the Lord s Supper and baptism, responsive readings, the sharing of stories, drama, worship stations, video presentations, sermons, etc. Spiritual Growth practicing the spiritual disciplines privately and through Biblical and formative group studies as we learn from each other and the Spirit to grow ourselves into the likeness of Jesus. Missional being the presence of Christ by creating go to structures that meet the physical and material, emotional, relational, and spiritual needs of people in our community and around the world. Innovation Praying, dreaming, visioning, and then welcoming new opportunities to explore creative possibilities for ministry that demonstrate an openness to the Spirit s mysterious and surprising leadership.
