2 Are you and I missionaries? As you will see in today s Tower, next Weekend we will host Fr. Paul Kala, who will preach about his mission in Ghana. But a talk I heard this week awakened this question: do we spread the enthusiasm of our Catholic Faith to others especially to our non-practicing or seldom practicing family, friends and neighbors? I know your first reaction will be like mine was I don t want to be an Evangelist! OK, but we don t have to act much differently than we do now all we need to be is luminous and loving and open in our faith life practices. The speaker I heard is Dr. Lisa Fortini-Campbell, a Lecturer at Kellogg School of Management, who teaches executives from around the world to be more customer-focused businesspeople. Lisa who lives in Wilmette, became Catholic through the RCIA and was received and confirmed into the Church in She began with the movie Guess who s coming to dinner? (a 1967 comedy-drama film starring Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier and Katharine Hepburn). The Tracy and Hepburn characters are San Francisco liberals who raised their daughter to be just as liberal as they themselves were. They are very proud of and happy with their daughter (who lives and works in another state) until she brings her new finance (Sidney Poitier) home for a dinner to meet her parents. Suddenly the thought of their beautiful daughter married to a black man (who by the way is a successful medical doctor) awakens their latent prejudices and shakes their self-definition of liberal. Dr. Fortini-Campbell called this cognitive dissonance. So this event forced them to choose between their latent prejudice and their liberal, loving daughter. And, of course, as the choice became clearer and they were converted, overcoming their prejudice, they returned to the true liberals they always thought they were. Lisa went on, then, to share that she faced a similar dynamic in her family when she decided to become a Catholic. Her mother (a devoutly practicing Lutheran) and her father (who left the Catholic Church 30 years ago) were decidedly anti-catholic. In fact in her whole extended family there we no practicing Catholics and it seemed that none would be welcome! Yet, she found that as she shared her enthusiasm for the living and vital faith she had found, being luminous and loving and open, her family and friends became able to see Catholicism in a different light. Her mother came to her reception and confirmation into the Church and another friend gave her the gift of a gold cross! These past fifteen years have been very hard on us faithful Catholics as we have had to live with the priests sexual abuse crisis, diminishing numbers of faithful at weekend Masses, and the controversial stands of the Catholic Church in the United States (pro-life, for immigration reform, the un-clarity of the role of women in the Church, etc.). But this is just where Lisa s story and her sharing were so very valuable to me. Perhaps we have become so depressed and despondent about these issues that we have lost the focus on the wonderful gifts our Catholic Faith brings into our lives. Perhaps not being luminous and loving and open about our faith also gives the wrong impression to our family, friends and relatives who are not as faithful to the practice of their Catholic faith today. So back to the question should we be missionaries to our own people? Yes, and we could easily do this if we followed the marketing advice of Dr. Lisa Fortini-Campbell! ~ Fr. Bob

Brochures and permission forms can be found at the entrances. Kairos is a fantastic retreat open to incoming juniors, seniors, and college freshmen. It might be in November, but now is the time to register for NCYC! The National Catholic Youth Conference only comes around every other year, and this time it is Nov in Indianapolis. 6 LAST WEEK TO SIGN UP! BEST WISHES FOR A HAPPY RETIREMENT! It is with great sadness that we announce the retirement of our Administrative Assistant, Cindy Reid, effective at the end of June. Cindy has been an integral part of Sacred Heart operations for close to 4 years. It is hard to say goodbye to someone who knows many of the details involved in daily life at a parish. However, we are excited that Cindy has the opportunity to join her family in Michigan and spend her retirement years with them. So, we are not really going to say goodbye we are going to say good luck and we will all miss you. There will always be chocolate here waiting to for you should you come back for a visit. Thank you for your commitment to Sacred Heart, thank you for your friendship, and thank you for making all of our lives that much easier. **************************************************** We welcome Trish O Toole who has most recently been part-time working Fridays and Sundays, to a full-time weekday position effective upon Cindy s retirement.

During the month of July, the office is closed, but please Annie, she ll be checking if you have any questionsadanstrom@shwschool.org. The office reopens in August. Don t forget Vision, Medical and Dental Forms for next year! For next year, all incoming JK, K and 6th graders, as well as any students participating in sports through SHAC will need a current Illinois state medical form by the first day of school. All Kindergarteners, 2nd Graders and 6th graders need a new Dental form as well. And new last year, all new students to Sacred Heart as well as all the Kindergarteners need a Vision form by Oct.15th. If you need any of these forms, please let me know, I am more than happy to send one home with your child, or an electronic version, though all dentist and pediatricians should have these forms available, and they are on our website as well. We can accept them anytime, so don t delay and get them to us as soon as you have them. The school calendar is now posted on our website under the calendar page. You can download it to your computer and subscribe to it. That way any updates will be automatically sent to you. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Registration for NEW and RETURNING families is now taking place for the school year. To register online, go to the parish website and follow the leads for the religious education registration. Classes take place on Sunday mornings 9:00-10:15 AM for P/K-Grade 8 and Sunday afternoons 5:30-6:45 for Grades 5-8. We particularly need students for the afternoon classes. Catechists are also needed for many of the grades. Please consider volunteering for this ministry and call Sr. Luanne at the Religious Education Office to talk further. There are presently 55 catechists teaching in our program but each year some leave and need to be replaced. Ordinarily there are two catechists in each classroom of students. There will be a SPRED info meeting on Friday, June 28, 10:00-11:30. SPRED is religious education for those with special needs and we are presently exploring the possibility of how to meet these needs in our parish/cluster. Call Sr. Luanne for more info or if you re interested in attending. INTERESTED? Are you or someone you know interested in becoming a Catholic? Or even just exploring the possibility? Or were you baptized Catholic but not catechized? Sessions for inquirers begin late summer in a process called RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. 8 WELCOME FR. PAUL KALA! Fr. Kaka will be speaking on behalf of the Saint Therese Youth Development Center International (STYDEC International) of Ghana, a Catholic Not-For-Profit Organization dedicated to Youth Ministry, Evangelization and Education in the most rural parts of Ghana. Rural, meaning, they have no running water, no portable drinking water and no electricity. The children have to walk several miles each day to school in a nearby town and back and usually do so, many a time on empty stomach and no water to drink while in school. Most of these villages have not yet been evangelized and Bishop Bemile of the Diocese of Wa in Ghana asked STYDEC to help spread the Gospel in these areas. Our future project in the next couple years is to build a Catholic Boarding High School to provide quality affordable education for those in most need. This will cost an estimated two hundred thousand U.S dollars to build and furnish. All funds from this Mission Co-op in your parish will go directly toward the construction of this school for these poor children of God in rural Ghana. In order to realize this goal, we partly count on the generosity of you and your parishioners. Thus, we are deferring the Peter s Pence Offering until July 7, 2013.
