2 HEART TO HEART pastor to parish My Background My story begins in Canton, Ohio. That s where I was born. Not too far from the Football Hall of Fame, although at the time of my birth it wasn t there yet. I was so premature that the nurse in the delivery room, who happened to be Catholic, baptized me. They didn t think I was going to make it. That s kind of nifty. I don t have to go searching my memory for the date of my Baptism, since it s also my birthdate. When I was four, my parents, Joe and Julia, moved from Canton to Dover, Ohio. I consider Dover to be my hometown because from that point until I left for college that s where I grew up, not Canton. College Years I left home to attend college at Northwestern University. I graduated in 1976 with a BA in Political Science from the College of Arts and Sciences, and spent a year after school teaching religion at Aurora Central High School. You may wonder how a Political Science major ends up teaching religion. In my Northwestern years, I got real involved at the Newman Center. Sheil Center became my home away from home. It was then, and is still today, staffed by Archdiocesan priests. The vocational calling I perceived was born at Sheil Center. After that year of teaching high school, I entered the University of St. Mary of the Lake. After four years of seminary, I was ordained in 1981 with an MDiv degree, as well as a pontifical STL (the Roman degree which licenses you to go on for a doctorate, if so desired). Associate Pastor and twice as a Pastor (Sacred Heart makes my third pastorate). I ve served at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Glenview, at St. Michael in Orland Park, at Notre Dame de Chicago on the Near West Side, and at St. Julie Billiart in Tinley Park. That ministerial journey brings me to you. It s as if I ve come full circle. I arrived in the Chicago area for those college years in Evanston. I m not so very far from where I started. My undergraduate days at Northwestern were challenging but very fulfilling and happy. I anticipate and hope for the same, here at Sacred Heart. Family Ties I just turned sixty-years-old. Yep. The big six-oh! I ve got one brother, Jim. He s married to Kelli and they ve got two daughters, Julia and Olivia. My niece, Julia, is named after our mom, who died in Dad still is going strong. He s 89 and continues to live on his own in the house where Jim and I grew up, in Dover. I hope to get home to Dover in a few weeks to collect dad and bring him up to Winnetka to stay with me in the rectory for a few days and see the parish. Dad s been retired for a long time now. He owned his own jewelry store. Everybody in Dover knew dad and also knew he had the best deals in town on watches and diamond engagement rings. He keeps busy these days by handcrafting wine and stack tables. The wine you understand, I m sure. The stack tables: we ll leave that for an appropriate homily. Our support for the Appeal funds: Catholic schools, parishes, religious education programs and ministry formation, initiatives to foster respect for life, as well as those that make the world more just, peaceful, and loving. Through its support of Catholic Relief Services, the Appeal serves people worldwide, without regard for religious affiliation, whose lives are devastated by natural disasters, illnesses, wars, and famines. Once the pledge payments have exceeded our goal, all of the additional funds are returned to Sacred Heart for use in our ministries. Catechists Needed No, it's not too early to be recruiting since plans are now underway for the school year. Senior citizens, college students, young adults, etc, why not give this ministry of catechesis some serious consideration. If you love children, are good with them and want to share your faith with them, call Sr. Luanne to talk further about the possibility of teaching. Classes are Sunday mornings 9:00-10:15 and Wednesdays 6:30-7:45 PM (Grades 4-8). Ordinarily there are two catechists per class with class size of students. Religious Education Registration for Classes You had until June 30 to register and receive the discounted rate. New this year is that payment or agreed upon payment plan is due at registration. July 1 the price increases $50 per child. Classes are Sundays 9:00-10:15 AM (P/K- Grade 8) or Wednesdays 6:30-7:45 PM (Grades 4-8). Register on line at the parish website. Call the R.E. Office for more info. SPRED Sacred Heart is attempting to be a SPRED sight in the near future and is in need of more volunteers.
