THE TOWER August 9, 2015 Nineteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time SACRED HEART PARISH I am the bread of life... Whoever eats this bread will live forever... John 6
Hearts Contemplating Christ
Hearts Making a Difference The nation doesn t simply need what we have. It needs what we are. (St. Teresia Benedicta, Edith Stein) Each year, Sacred Heart partners with North Shore Congregation Israel to raise funds to provide students at Jordan Elementary Community School in Rogers Park (just north of Touhy and Wolcott) with much needed school supplies. There are over 600 children at Jordan with almost 600 different stories of family problems and living conditions that impact daily life. But there is one common thread that links almost all of these 600 stories: Education is the path that will lead each one to a better life. Operation Backpack helps them on that path. The student body at Jordan is 70% Hispanic and 25% African-American. 96% of the students are low-income families. Operation Backpack is a coalition of private citizens and religious institutions that provide essential school supplies to all 600 students at Jordan School. It s a tangible way to help these children start school with the basic tools needed to get the education that will alter their lives. For your information, this program is very financially efficient! It has no administrative costs, as volunteers do all the purchasing and support work. Just $27 will provide all the supplies for one student for an entire school year; $160 funds a memorable and maybe life altering field trip for a class. OPERATION BACKPACK If you would like to volunteer to pack the school supplies, all are welcome at North Shore Congregation Israel on Sunday, August 30th at 9:00am. Thank you for providing this most important foundation and promise of a brighter future to all 600 students at Jordan Elementary Community School! Help End Funding for Planned Parenthood Priests for Life has helped expose to the public that Planned Parenthood, in violation of the law, is selling the body parts of aborted babies. Cardinal Sean O Malley commented on this in the news recently. The revelations are leading to action by Congress to end taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood. You can help make this happen. Please go to the Priests for Life website on this issue: BabyBodyParts.com, where you can see the videos that have revealed this, can join a prayer campaign about it, and can take action so that Congress can stop your tax dollars from funding these activities. Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, thanks you for your support. ONGOING OPPORTUNITIES TO SHARE Tuesdays and Thursdays during the School Year Tutor Elementary students at St. Columbanus School. Leave SH at 9am, return by 1:30pm. 4 HEART TO HEART pastor to parish Working out the Kinks The Religious Education offices have moved from the school to the parish office building. We anticipate a higher volume of calls to the parish office phones and have worked with Comcast to increase our capacity. I am grateful to both the school and the religious education program for working out their needs collaboratively, step-by-step moving jointly into a future filled with growth and new possibilities. Welcome It is August, which means we are fortunate to have Father Franco Imoda living here and helping out at Sacred Heart for this month. He arrived earlier in the week and is already pitching in to help. Father has been gracing us with his presence for many, many years now, dating all the way back to Father Ferrigan s time here as pastor. It was at Father Ferrigan s invitation that Father Imoda journeyed from Rome to Chicago in order to help out at Sacred Heart. Every August since then we ve been blessed with his presence. Father Imoda is the retired rector of the Gregorian University in Rome. I ve been there to visit. It s in a great section of old Rome, near the Trevi fountain and the Victor Emmanuel II monument. Welcome Father Imoda! Our hope is that you are able in this month to renew old friendships, relax a bit, and help out a bit. Good to have you here! Apparently Comcast needs to return and work out some kinks in our phone system because calls to Religious Education are being dropped or unanswered. We ask for your patience as we work on this. We can t fix this on our own and, of course, must rely on Comcast. It may take a while to correct the problem, but we re on it as best we can be at the present time. In the event you cannot reach us at our usual number (847) , please call (847) and the parish office will transfer calls to us. We also just concluded a space sharing meeting where school and religious education examined their needs and agreed upon a room being set aside for the staging of religious education projects and resources for catechists. (Room 207) Obviously, it s not the same room that religious education used before. That room, adjacent to the school library, has been renamed the Learning Lab, and is now set aside for the inclusive education initiative.
Hearts Nurtured by Faith If God can work through me, he can work through anyone (St. Francis of Assisi) RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Behold, I make all things new Rev.21:5 Many things are new in our Religious Education ministry. A new year, new offices, new staff, a new way of sharing space in the school. While some things have changed, our core mission remains the same: to partner with you in helping our children to know, love and follow Jesus Christ in our Catholic tradition. As your new DRE, I am thrilled to be here with you and look forward to meeting you and your families. Carol Nowatzke, who you know as our Youth Minister, will also be a part of Religious Education and will make a great addition to our ministry. Classes begin September 13 th. If you haven t registered, it s time to DO IT! We are working on class lists and will finalize them soon. Look for the registration link on our webpage. SPARKED HEARTS NCYC: Inteested in attending the National Catholic Youth Conference this November? This is an incredible opportunity to learn, pray, celebrate, and have fun with 23,000 Catholic teens from around the country. Contact Carol if you are interested! JUNIOR HIGH NIGHT is on hiatus for the summer, but be on the lookout for great opportunities coming your way! Don t forget to follow us on and find us on Facebook! Contact Carol anytime x. 132 or cnowatzke@shparish.com SCHOOL NEWS We are back in the office every day from 9:00 am-noon. or call us if you need anything. The Call to Serve! Have you wanted to learn more about your faith and like the idea of sharing it with children? You don t have to have experience or all of the answers, just an open heart and a willingness to learn. We will provide training and guidance every step of the way. If you feel called to service, but are not sure how, feel free to contact me at slehocky@shparish.com and we can explore the possibilities. We are also in need of Substitute Catechists, Catechist Aides, Room Parents and Traffic Control. God does not call the qualified, he qualifies the called God promises us that we will be made new through Jesus. As we journey together this year, it is my prayer that we will grow together in love, faith and hope in our Lord. Sue Lehocky Director of Religious Education
Hearts Alive in Worship My only desire is to unite myself to God (St. Paul of the Cross) CONSIDER THE CHICAGO CATHOLIC SCRIPTURE STUDY The Archdiocese of Chicago offers a four year Scripture certification program for adults. CCSS fosters a clearer understanding of Scripture that leads to a mature relationship with God and each other in our faith communities, homes and workplaces. This year, the CCSS will take place at St. Athanasius in Evanston on 30 Sunday evenings from 6:15pm to 8:15pm starting in September. (Year two of the program will take place at St. John of the Cross in Western Springs on Wed. evenings from 7-9pm. ) The CCSS courses are lecture style, instructor led classes accompanied by student breakout groups for faith sharing. CCSS instructors have an expertise in Scripture. The four year plan of study includes: Year 1-Old Testament Foundations Genesis through Kings Year 2-New Testament Foundations-Jesus and Disciples Year 3-Old Testament Exile and Restoration Year 4-Old & New Testaments-The Word in the Hellenistic World Note, Seniors (age 60 and above) can attend this same lecture series at a discounted rate. To learn more about this program, St. Anthanasius Church in Evanston will host a free Chicago Catholic Scripture School Preview Night on Tuesday, August 11th at 7pm (till 9pm). They are located at 1609 Lincoln Street in Evanston. You can also visit or contact Patricia Malinowski at or pmalinowski@archchicago.org. SCRIPTURE REFLECTION GROUP MONDAYS 9AM Join Judy Pyke on Monday mornings at 9am (after the 8:30am Mass) in the Parish Office Fireplace Room to read and delve into the Scriptures for the coming Sunday. The reflection group will meet for 1 hour. Breaking open the Word parallels the Breaking of the Bread for just as we are nourished by the Bread of Life, so too are we nourished by the Word of God. We break bread, eat, digest and become bread for others. We also break open the Word, digest it, and become the living Word for others. Join us! All are welcome. NOTE: Our group will NOT meet August 10th. Regular weekly sessions will resume on Monday, August 17th THE RCIA ARE YOU SOMEONE OR DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO Has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic? Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not celebrated the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist? We offer an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on the teachings and experience of the Catholic Church via the Scriptures and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist during the Easter season. This process is commonly known as the RCIA or the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. You are welcome to participate in the process with your questions, your insights and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. For information please contact Judy Pyke, our Pastoral Associate, at the parish office at or via at jpyke@shparish.com.

Hearts Connected for Community Love is the beauty of the Soul (St. Augustine) THIS WEEK AT SACRED HEART Monday, August 10 Sacred Heart Men s Club Meeting 8:00PM/PCR Tuesday, August 11 Prayer Group 9:00AM/POFR BULLETIN DEADLINE Please submit your bulletin articles by Tuesday 9:00AM. Any articles received after the deadline will be placed in next week s bulletin. Thank You.
Hearts Connected for Community Love is the beauty of the Soul (St. Augustine) Have you ever heard of Wolfgang Beltracchi? For decades he created forgeries of works from the most famous painters in history and he made millions doing it. He was so talented in creating them that many of his creations were hanging, and may even hang to this day, in museums and art galleries around the globe. Experts cannot even tell the difference, and this has led to an inability to verify and then appraise pieces of art all over the world. The risk for the appraiser is too high since they might get it wrong. Beltracchi claims to have made one mistake, using the wrong paint on a painting, which then led to his arrest and conviction. After serving eighteen months of a six-year jail sentence, he continues to create original art and write books in order to help pay for all the lawsuits currently against him. There is no question about the immorality of lying and cheating in this manner. However, can you even imagine being able to create an imitation of something so close to the original that no one could tell the difference? Someone not familiar with the original could be easily fooled. But to fool so-called experts would be quite amazing. Saint Paul wrote to the Ephesians and encouraged them to be imitators of Jesus Christ, by living in love and sacrificing their very selves. Can you imagine imitating Jesus so closely that people only see him when they look at you? The term Christian means to put on Christ. We are to be Jesus Christ to the world, leaving Mass where we have consumed him in the Eucharist so we can be more like him. Everyday Stewards are called to give more like Christ, share more like Christ, and love more like Christ. It is no crime to imitate Jesus Christ, but instead, a sin not to try. Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS Liturgical Publications Inc EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP PARKING SAFETY The safety of our parishioners and visitors is a significant concern. We appreciate everyone s cooperation to make safety a priority. We ask that you not double park or block the entrances and exits to the parking lot. As a reminder, there is parking available on Green Bay Road, in the village lot by McDonalds and on surrounding side streets. Thank you! Attention Altar Servers We need your help! Sometimes, especially in the summer, servers may have a last-minute conflict that keeps them from serving at their scheduled time. So, when you come to Mass on the weekend, could you make a point of checking to see if there are enough servers? (There should be three.) If there aren t enough servers, please come up to serve, even if you re not scheduled, and even if Mass has already begun. Your help will be greatly appreciated, and you will be doing a wonderful service for all the people of Sacred Heart Parish. Thank you for helping our parish family worship together!
