2 continuation of why the Eucharist brings us together as the Body of Christ. In the second century, Polycarp and Ignatius of Antioch witnessed the power of the Eucharist up to death. The Eucharist reflects the great truth of the incarnation God is with us. God reveals himself in the liturgy of the word and in each Mass, Jesus Christ feeds us at the same table. Jesus does not invite us to his table merely as spectators, only to observe or smell the food, but to share and participate. Therefore, we receive Jesus in order to give him to others. St. Teresa of Avila writes, in Eucharist we are empowered to give witness of Jesus Christ. And again, as we live and celebrate the Eucharist, we anticipate the Parousia (i.e., the Second Coming) of the Lord. Liturgy is the prayer of the church. Eucharistic sacrament is a solemn moment of the church when the Holy Spirit transforms our actions and makes us active participants in God's saving plan, our coming to the table is the awareness that it s our responsibility to share what we have received with others. In the Roman Catholic Church, Eucharist is and has been the supreme opportunity of contemplation, sharing the meal together as a source of grace. It s a moment of silence and it is vertical dimension, the prayers of the faithful are lifted up to the Father during the consecration of Bread and Wine. When the Minister says, body and blood of Christ, our response is Amen. Amen is a commitment to live this reality and act of solidarity, justice, and love for others. Remembrance and thanksgiving are the essentials of Eucharistic Spirituality. So the Eucharist is a constant recalling of our Pascal mysteries; passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, a sacrifice of thanksgiving. To eat and drink is simultaneously to receive the gift of His grace and to be infused with His life to accomplish the unfinished work of salvation. ~ Fr. Kisaka Associate Pastor

3 Are Your Young Children Participating in Our Children's Liturgy of the Word? Almost every Sunday at our 10:30 AM Mass, young children between 3 and 8 years old participate in a special liturgy, designed especially for them. Just before the First Reading, the priest invites all the young children to come up to the front of the Church for a special blessing. Then the children walk to our Parish Offices building, which is directly connected to the Church. There they participate in the Liturgy of the Word (Readings, Responsorial Psalm, Gospel) using translations that are appropriate for their level of understanding. They also participate in an activity that helps them connect with one of the themes in the readings or the season (e.g. Thanksgiving, Advent). The children return to Mass at the time of the Offertory Procession, in which they often participate. The Children's Liturgy of the Word is led directly by Ms. Patty Decillo, one of our Parishioners, assisted by adult and youth volunteers. We invite you to bring your younger children to our 10:30 Mass, so that they can participate in our Children's Liturgy of the Word, and you can participate more fully in the Liturgy of the Word in Church. If you have a child who will be 4 by Sept. 1, 2013 and wish to enroll them in our extended day JK program, or have a child who will be 5 by Sept. 1, 2013 and wish to enroll them in Kindergarten, you will need to fill out a registration form and include a $600 non refundable fee. All NEW students require a registration form, Baptismal Certificate, and Birth Certificate. If your child is already in JK and will just be moving on to Kindergarten, there is a RE-registration form to fill out, and you will be guaranteed a spot in Kindergarten. JK and NEW Kindergarten spots are first come, first served so don t delay in turning in your registration form as space is limited and fills up quickly. If you have any questions, please contact the office. If you missed our open houses and still would like to visit the school, please call us at , or us at shs@shwschool.org and we will set up an appointment for a tour. Sacred Heart will be helping provide Christmas dinners to the Marillac House families on Chicago s West side again this year. As you are shopping and stocking up for the holiday season, please help us meet our goal of 100 Christmas dinners! We will begin collecting in November, but if you see things on sale, think about buying extra to help a family in need this holiday season. We need: Boxed Mashed Potatoes, Canned Gravy, Boxed Stuffing, Canned Cranberry Sauce, Canned Vegetables, Corn Muffin Mix, Boxed Cake Mix, Frosting, Brownie Mix. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Hope everyone is having a blessed Thanksgiving weekend and did take time to thank God for all our blessings. We have no classes today but will be busy in December with our many Advent activities. Next Sunday, Dec. 2, is our 4 th grade field trip to Manor Care Home in Highland Park. Students will sing carols to the residents and give each person a homemade Christmas ornament to decorate their doors/rooms. The bus begins boarding from Sacred Heart by 8:55 and leaves at 9:00 to return by 10:15. Our thanks to Joe Carey for leading the songs and playing his guitar. Next Sunday is also the day we in Sacred Heart Religious Education celebrate St. Nicholas Day, which is Dec. 6. St. Nick comes and puts a treat in the shoes of the younger students which they leave outside their classroom. 3 rd Graders are busy rehearsing for their Christmas pageant under the direction of Ed Kuffert and Barbara Anderson. Our thanks to Barb and Ed and to the committees of 3 rd grade parents with the leadership of co-chairs Lisa Hackett and Shannon Preda. The Dec. 16 performance promises to be awesome.
