1 The monthly newsletter of Redeemer Lutheran Church-Rochester, Minnesota connec on sunday June 5 will be the first Connec on Sunday! Connec on Sundays are about enjoying the connec ons we have and making sure we are connec ng with those around us. We are not having Connec on Sundays because Redeemer is a cold place that needs to learn to connect, but instead these are mes where we can build on our God given strengths. Redeemer is a warm, caring place full of connec on and that is something desperately needed in the world today. This first connec on Sunday we will be focusing on the many simple ways to greet and connect with those around you. This Sunday will be very low key and simple, but very purposeful. That is how connec on starts, a smile, handshake, hello, or a wave. Future connec on Sundays will highlight how God has gi ed groups and people at Redeemer to connect in special ways. Through the connectors, connec on mentors, and connec on Sundays we pray that Redeemer may be a place where people feel the love of Christ in a very real way and are not afraid to share that with those around them here at Redeemer, in their homes, at work, or wherever they are. June 2011 Mission Statement As Christians based on the solid foundation of God s Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit we strive to live out, lift up, and share our faith in Jesus Christ -welcoming all into our family of believers. 3 Staff Reflections Matthew 5:33-48 Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made. But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God s throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. All you need to say is simply Yes or No ; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. You have heard that it was said, Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth. But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. As Christians we are looked upon differently. Even though we are also sinful humans just like everyone else, we are sometimes held to a different standard. And if we don t meet that standard, judgment is made that Christians are no better than anyone else. The text above is important to remember. Do you always have patience and love toward someone that hurts you? I fall guilty of feeling the emotion of disappointment. And for me it s challenging to regain trust and the feeling of support in a relationship once I m disappointed. But the Lord says, to turn the other check and love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. Christ died for all, giving us the amazing gift of eternal life. We are forgiven and so shall forgive others. If you are hurt, look to the Lord for peace and guidance for He will surely hear your prayer. And then Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. (ESV) Hebrews 10:23-25 I look forward to the day when we are all made perfect. Until that day, I pray we seek to mend hurts through the power of Christ s love and to plant the seed of the Holy Spirit in as many people as possible. There are so many people in the world that are full of hurt and need the peace and forgiveness that only Christ can give. Can you share that love in some way, shape, or form? - April Beckman, Director of Parish Music Church Office Hours: M-F 7:30 am-4:00 pm Phone: Fax: redeemer@charterinternet.com Website: Blessed to Able to Serve Pastor, James W. This Summer I am offering FREE lessons!! Band Instrument students can sign up for lessons the week of August Orchestra instrument students can sign up for lessons the week of August This is a great opportunity to prepare for the new school year. This lesson week option is flexible. We can do group lessons or single lessons. Work on tough stuff or basic, and then if there are enough instruments play a song together on the Sunday service following the lesson week (Aug. 14- band, Aug. 21-orch.). There could possibly be a group Friday rehearsal, to make that happen. Parents, if you are interested in this, please contact me. I can be flexible with lesson times, as well as how many you would like (say 2-4 (30 min.) lessons during the week). This is for students who have already started playing an instrument. Also, if you have a friend from school, invite them to come play too! Free lessons are hard to come by! Please contact me before August 1. 10 Health Notes Seeding Health and Hope An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Carrots Gardening is a great way to get some exercise and can result in bunches of beautiful blooms or a flavorful feast of fresh veggies. Unfortunately, thousands of people wind up in the ER each year from gardening mishaps. Before you reach for your spade and watering can, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have garnered the following tips for safety while gardening. Wear the right gear. This includes safety goggles, sturdy shoes, long sleeves and pants, garden gloves, earplugs if using loud garden machinery, and sunscreen. Don t forget, half the fun of gardening is looking cute in your wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses! Garden with care. Be mindful of possible distractions and hazards and make sure to use chemicals and equipment properly. We know you re having fun, but don t spend too much time in the sun. Drink water, take breaks, and watch out for the symptoms of heat-related illness such as high temperature, headache, rapid pulse, dizziness, nausea, or confusion. Pay attention to your limitations. Talk to your doctor about any physical or mental concerns that might affect your gardening ability. Follow warnings against using heavy machinery if you are taking any medications that may cause drowsiness or impair your judgment. Keep an eye on your level of fatigue, heart rate and physical discomfort. Vaccinations save lives. Make sure your tetanus/diphtheria (Td) vaccine is up-to-date before digging around in the garden as tetanus lives in the soil and enters the body through breaks in the skin. Physical activities like gardening can prevent obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, coronary artery disease, stroke, depression, colon cancer and premature death. So enjoy the fresh air and throw some variety in your exercise regimen with gardening! Adapted from Health and Safety Guide for Gardeners. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 11 Thank you for your prayers and support! Jon Dicke is honored during a RCLS Chapel Service. L to R, RCLS Athletic Director, Paul Wickre; Jon Dicke; and Boys Basketball Head Coach John Beise Stephen Ministry On behalf of the RCLS Boys Basketball Team, I would like to thank our wonderful Redeemer family and community for supporting our trip to the Lutheran National Basketball Tournament in Valparaiso, Indiana. We have memories that will last a lifetime! We especially are reminded of your loving support as we pay our final expenses and know that your generosity made this dream possible for thirteen very special basketball players, two dedicated coaches, and a family of families that believed in the dream. The team went 2-2 at the tourney, with an incredibly intense 3-overtime third game, which we won! Our losses were to schools several times our size. Our team was blessed by having the first-ever RCLS player, Redeemer member Jon Dicke, named to the ten-member All-Tournament Team. We are extremely proud of our team and the effort made throughout their 41-5 season. On a personal note, I wish to thank Redeemer for your support of the RCLS ministry and the Redeemer families with children at RCLS. After eleven wonderful years, on June 1, 2011, we will watch our youngest, Jon, graduate from RCLS. We cannot begin to count the blessings of being with RCLS for the elementary and middle school years. We can assure you that your support is making a difference is many lives. God s Blessings! - Kris Dicke SUPPORT: To hold in position so as to keep from falling, sinking, or slipping. Support is something we all need. God gives us support through our Christian brothers and sisters. Let us all be sensitive to one another s needs and take the time to support each other through prayers, phone calls, friendly chats after church, and even visits. Also, remember that we have Stephen Ministers who are willing to give their support. We welcome two new Stephen Ministers to our current team. Kathy Stien and Dawn Radtke have both completed course work which has involved pre-class reading assignments, in-class lecture, discussion, and role playing. We thank them for their diligent work and commitment and also thank leaders, Pastor Settle, Bill Cochran, and Dave Wood for preparing and teaching the various sessions. Kathy and Dawn will be commissioned in a church service this month but even then their training is far from over. Continuing education is an important component of Stephen Ministry training. They will continue, as part of the team, to meet twice a month, even after they begin meeting with their care receivers. The goal of Stephen Ministers is to continually enhance their skills and learn new ways to care. All this enables them to provide the best care possible to their care receivers. For more information about Stephen Ministry, please contact Pastor Rance Sette at (507) When I aid, My foot is slipping your love, O Lord, supported me (Psalm 94:18). Page 11

12 Church Council Highlights - May 10, 2011 OLD BUSINESS: Constitution and By-Laws Feedback Council feedback included: Concern for the volume of committees each council advocate needs to manage Positive support for the council advocates and overall councils to function as a governing body providing vision and direction for the church When presenting the new constitution and revised by-laws, ensure to consistently state why we need to revise/update/restructure. Strong support for the advocates to have a longer term (3 years) due to the new role and function of the board. Support for the restructure, yet questioned if the structure alone will help to address the functioning of the board from a managing body to a governing body. How will we ensure we won t fall into old habits? The Board was also reminded of the spiritual gifts training Pastor Heining conducts on Sunday and how we need to ensure that these advocates are visionary leaders within our church. President Tackmann proposed a structure for sharing the constitution and by-laws with the voters. She asked council members for support in answering questions and gathering feedback at each table. Council members disperse one per table. Scott Okuno will provide a brief overview. Council members asked Scott to identify the major points of change and where feedback/questions are needed. Thanks to the Zemke Family, we will be having a garden again this year. This can be a lot of fun and is a great fund raiser - but - we do need everyone to help with weeding and later picking the vegetables. Also, will need youth to help on Saturday and Sunday by being at church to sell the vegetables. There is a signup sheet on the Youth bulletin board. We are asking families to sign up and come out on a Saturday or one day during the week to work in the garden. It is a good way for families to spend some time together and do their part in the fundraiser. I will also have a signup for the youth to help on Saturdays and Sundays. Valleyfair Day Monday, June 27, 2010, is LYF Valleyfair Day. We will be leaving the church at 8:00 a.m. and return home by 8:00 p.m. We will be taking advantage once again of the luncheon provided by LYF for $3.00. If you are interested in going, please give Lynora or Michael a check for the $25.50 as soon as possible since the tickets have already been purchased. Make checks payable to Redeemer Youth. Come, join us for a fun day! CHURCH YOUTH SOFTBALL has started. If you are interested in playing, there is still room. If you don t play, we also need a cheering section, so please come and help us cheer the team on. We have a great time. We lost the first game but won the second one. DON T MISS OUT! Check out these upcoming events VBS - July Bethesda - July Waffle Breakfast - July 31 Y.E.S. (Youth-Enlightened-Encouraged-Enthusiastically Led by the Spirit) Y.E.S. Group met on Sunday, May 15, and discussed being a humble servant. The Bible story related was Jesus washing the disciples feet. The story centered around a challenge Glen Beck made to help someone in need without them knowing who you were and encouraging them by knowing that someone cares. A man bought $20 worth of groceries and set out to find someone who really needed help. He had a few people in mind but that didn t turn out as he thought -.the day went on and finally late in the evening, he remembered that he had been seeing a man on the corner on his way to work that looked like he could use some help. He retraced his steps and found the man sleeping behind a bank building. He left a bag of groceries unnoticed along with a Bible and a note that God cared about him and he did, too. The next day on his way to work he found the man sitting in the same spot reading his note with the Bible on his lap and eating a peanut butter sandwich from the bag of groceries he had left. The man was so moved that he has shared his story and plans to do it regularly. We then discussed a girl in Y.E.S. Group who had asked the group for prayers on her family s behalf due to an illness in her family. We prayed as a group for this young lady and I am sure many of us are still including this family in our prayers. We then broke into groups to help with VBS decorations.. butterflies..drums and painting. Page 15

22 Orphan Grain Train Highlights Japan Update: Orphan Grain Train is not planning on shipping to Japan. Services were offered but not needed at this time. They will accept money. OGT has some funds dedicated to Japan but it will not be given to the Japanese government, rather it will go the LCMS director of Japan. Haiti Update: Containers with food and water have been sent. A compound dealing directly with orphanages, church, schools, and villages is the recipient. There is no way that our food can get misdirected. Our Haiti trucks took food into the mountains to a village and stayed there to make sure that the children consumed their water and food so that it could not be stolen from them. Picture: Several months ago this man received a PET. We were in the market the other day when we saw him peddling his PET across the busy road. He had an empty water jug, went to the water window where people buy water, gets the jug filled up and goes back across the street. This man now makes water deliveries for people and can support himself! He had a haircut and clean clothes. It was great to see the life a crippled man change and the PET allows him to have employment and self esteem. Picture: Some of the previously sent desks that were distributed to seven agencies in Haiti. This is one of the trucks they hire to transport food, desk, and chairs up to LaCoup village in NW Haiti mountains, so they can have school. Along with the school desks and supplies we send hygiene kits. I love the children waiting for their little kits and according to our sources there, these are some of the first hygiene products they have ever had. Picture: Mercy kits were handed out to the ladies living in the mountainous tent cities...you can see the tents in the background. Moldova Update: OGT received an thank you: Thank you for your help, we just were your hands here and distributed the good to many of those in need in Moldova. Thank you for being partners with us and we are looking forward to continuing our work with you. - Natalia and Ruslan of Bible Mission of Moldova Feedback quote from a little girl: I really wanted to have clothes like the girls in my class but I knew that mom can t afford them with her small salary. My heart was full of joy when I found in my box skirts and tops and pants and sweaters and many other things that I really needed and I couldn t dream about. Thank you so much for your generosity on behalf of my family. - Adrian and Oxana Capatina from Village of Rusestii Noe (brother and sister from a very poor family) Ghana Update: OGT opens the door of opportunity for ministry networking, is John Donkoh s description of a shipment to Ghana. The Ghana Lutheran ministry has established some level of partnership with two credible organizations; the Ghana Red Cross and the Village of Hope. Village of Hope is an orphanage that has carved a name in taking care of orphans in the country. Village of Hope provided free transportation to take the boxes for distribution in the Swedru area. The Ghana Ministry is grateful to OGT for sending these items to people in their point of need. The picture is a lady in the Swedru village that received clothing from the OGT shipment. Page 22

26 Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, Minnesota Return service requested Non-Profit Organization U.S. POSTAGE PAID Rochester, Minnesota Permit No. 376 A Little Humor! While browsing in a Christian bookstore one day, I discovered a shelf of reduced price items. Among the gifts was a figurine of a man and woman, their heads lovingly tilted toward one another. Happy 10th Anniversary read the inscription. It appeared to be in perfect condition, yet its tag indicated damaged. Examining it more closely, I found another tag underneath and chuckled, it read wife is coming unglued. Summer Worship Schedule Thursday: 6 pm Saturday: 5:30 pm Sunday: 8:00 and 9:30 When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep from attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, It s no use Grandpa. Now the mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights. What is love...(from kids)... Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is okay.
