3 Staff Reflections Dear fellow redeemed, While most of the world knows January 1 as New Year s Day, Christians have long remembered this day as The Name of Jesus. For it was on the 8 th day that Jesus was circumcised and given the name of Jesus, as God had declared through his angel. Since January 1 is on a Sunday this year, we will have opportunity to gather for worship and begin the New Year in the name of Jesus! And we anticipate many NEW things in We anticipate welcoming a new Associate Pastor sometime next summer. Please keep in your prayers the man God has in mind for us, as he concludes his seminary studies during this next months. But even before that, Lord willing, our Rochester Circuit will partner with our District and POBLO (People of the Book Lutheran Outreach) to bring a missionary to the Rochester area. At the present time, Rev. A.G. Paul is awaiting completion of all the necessary paperwork, that he might leave Afghanistan and come to Rochester. While the timetable is still sketchy, this has the potential to be the most meaningful thing we have undertaken in many years. A dozen years ago, we took a big leap forward as we hung a movable screen in the Chancel area. But now, technology has left us behind, and we need to update again. While the details still need to be worked out, I am confident that we will have moved into the 21 st century by the end of the year! My prayer is that in all things, new and old, we will continue to look at new ways of connecting people that we might use our God-given gifts and discover the joy of serving. While we often say Happy New Year at this time of the year, I am grateful that we will begin this year, as we begin every year, in the name of Jesus! 5 News Worth Noting! ASSIMILATION TEAM A dozen of your fellow members have accepted the challenge to help the entire congregation in our goal of joyfully serving. Of this group, some will serve as a visionary group, others are working on a more helpful new member orientation, and still others will serve as ministry mentors, helping people to find areas in which they can joyfully serve. If you can help, especially as a ministry mentor, please contact Jess Ihrke ( ) or Pastor Jim ( ). CALL DOCUMENTS IN THE MAIL! Our call committee has completed the congregational study and several other extensive documents that are necessary for calling a graduate from the seminary. These have been forwarded to our District President, who must sign them and pass them on to the Seminary. Probably during March, committee members will interview prospective candidates, and then bring that information to the voters for their preferences. Placement is usually during April, graduation in May, and we look forward to welcoming a new Associate Pastor in the summer. Even now, we can be praying for the man that the Lord is preparing for this position. BIBLE HANDBOOKS The order has arrived! Because of the volume ordered, we received free shipping, so the cost is only $20 each. Please use the envelope provided to return payment to the church office or offering plate. To facilitate snow removal, parking will only be allowed on the odd side (west and north) of the street on odd days, and the even side (east and south) of the street on even days. To add to the confusion, 7th Avenue winter restrictions will stay the same parking on the east side only only every day. This is another chance to show servanthood. Those with good legs and who know what day it is, may wish to park on the (proper side of the) street, leaving the lot for those who are visiting, have difficulty walking, are running late or who are confused by numbers! All proceeds from the sale of these books will go the mission of Building To Serve Our Savior s Building Fund. ATTENTION SARAH CIRCLE MEMBERS! The Bible Study for our next meeting on January 12 is The Blessing of Stress from the winter quarterly. See you there! Page 5

7 Stephen Ministry ARE YOU IN NEED OF... Someone who cares? Someone who supports? Someone who listens? Someone who shares? DURING THE TIME YOU HAVE A PROBLEM? STEPHEN MINISTRY IS FOR ANYONE EXPERIENCING Loneliness Loss of a spouse Retirement changes Unemployment Discouragement Childbirth Hospitalization Separation and Divorce Grief Terminal Illness Most of life s struggles It is a one-to-one Ministry grounded in Jesus command to love one another. Through one-to-one caring and confidential relationships, those who are hurting receive the love and care they need from a trained lay person who will walk beside them, really listen and provide distinctively Christian care. If you or someone you know would like a Stephen Minister please fill out a request slip (available at the narthex counter) and give it to Pastor Jim or feel free to call Bill Cochran (507) or Dave Wood (507) MOVIE NIGHT JANUARY 6, 6:00 PM Grab those left over Christmas goodies and join us for Movie Night! Bring some change for the pop machine and a free-will offering for pizza. Settle back into your comfy chair and enjoy the following movies: HEAVEN CAN WAIT-1943 Deceased turn-of-the century playboy Henry Van Cleve (Don Ameche) presents himself to the outer offices of Hades, where he asks a bemused Satan for permission to enter the gates of Hell. Though the devil doubts that Henry s sins qualify him for eternal damnation, Henry proceeds to recount a lifetime of wooing and pursuing women, his long, happy marriage to Martha (Gene Tierney) notwithstanding. Ernst Lubitsch s Heaven Can Wait, nominated for Academy Awards for best picture and director, is an enduring classic that showcases his trademark blend of wit, urbanity, and grace. Done in Color. AFTER THE THIN MAN-1936 It s New Year s Eve, Nick and Nora Charles have returned to the West Coast, and the philandering hubby of Nora s cousin has gone missing. Round up the usual suspects. The stars (plus the fourfooted one), writers and director of The Thin Man reunite for a giddy second comedy whodunit. Myra Loy is Nora, who by all accounts doesn t scold, doesn t nag and looks far too pretty in the morning. William Powell is Nick, retired from sleuthing but hardly retiring when it comes to a case more scrambled than the 3 a.m. eggs he whips up. And rising star James Stewart leads a tip-top supporting cast. This a fine way to start the New Year, Nick says as he springs Nora from Lockup. Indeed, it is. Page 7

At the end of June 2011, April completed the courses required for her to achieve her Masters in Church Music from Concordia University, Mequon, Wisconsin. Following this accomplishment, Pastor Rance approached a few music-oriented members of Redeemer asking if they would be interested in "doing something" to honor April's completion of her Master's Degree in Church Music. The response was very positive and it was decided an appropriate thing to do would be to have a piece of church music commissioned for Redeemer, in April's honor. Through recommendations of choir directors in Rochester, Dr. David Cherwien was engaged to compose the piece. Dr. Cherwien is a composer and director of the National Lutheran Choir, based in the Twin Cities. The members involved had a choice in what music would be composed, and it was decided to request a choir and organ variation based on the 1650 Lutheran hymn titled "All My Heart This Night Rejoices". Dr. Cherwien produced a beautiful work for choir, congregation, organ and flute. He plans on publishing the work, meaning all copies distributed in the future will contain the dedication statement: "Commissioned by Redeemer Lutheran Church, Rochester, Minnesota, in celebration and honor of April Beckman's completion of a Master's Degree in Church Music. Soli Deo Gloria!" April was surprised by this when the group presented her the picture-framed original title page at the 8 am service on November 27. April recently traveled back to Concordia, Mequon, the weekend of December 17/18 to take part in commencement activities. Congratulations April! Several people have requested a CPR class. The Health Cabinet has scheduled a class for Monday, February 6, at 6 pm. Ushers and Elders are encouraged to review our procedures. If you have already taken CPR, check to see if your card is current. More details and sign-up opportunities to come! Questions? Jan Dicke, , or the church office ( ). Page 8

10 From the Gillards.... We have been back in Uganda for two weeks now. (We didn t post it on this blog but we were in the States for 7 weeks for a muchneeded respite furlough. We sent out three updates during that time to those on our Yahoo!Groups distribution list. If you didn t get it, just give a shout and we can send it your way.) Now that we re back, we enjoy visitors welcoming us back almost daily. We love eating local lunch again (matooke, beans, rice, soup i.e. meat with broth, fresh mango, avocado, etc). The weather is fabulous. But a sadness fills our hearts. We are no longer working with the Lutheran Church Mission Uganda. The church has had some difficulties that make it impossible for Jacob to continue teaching and training their leaders. What next? We simply do not know. We ask for your prayers in this time of uncertainty. Until we get a better idea, we relish in God s word, daily prayer, and enjoy every day in this land we have come to care for so much. Notes of Thanks... Thank You Thanks to all of our thoughtful members for their cards, gifts, and kind words at Christmas time. We are blessed to be a part of this special community of believers. OGT News International Shipments: Norfolk to Ecuador Ida Grove to Belarus Norfolk to Latvia Domestic Shipments: Norfolk and Wisconsin to Native American Heritage Association at Rapid City, SD Central Nebraska to Ysleta Maryland branch sent quilts to children who are being bussed 2 hours daily after their school flooded and the quilts give them warmth. Haiti Update: It pleases us to be able to tell you that half of our Haiti containers are out of the port. We are also advised that the balance of them signed for releasing, but they will not be given to us until they are cleared with the port transportation division. We are hopeful that the balance of the containers will be released the week after Thanksgiving. Warehouse Boxes: It appears at this time that there will be a continuation as to the donation of the Blue Bunny boxes that are used for shipping Orphan Grain Train s humanitarian items. This is the best news we have had for some time as these boxes are used by several branches besides Norfolk. We should have definite approval after the Thanksgiving holiday. 12 Health Notes Caregiver stress: Tips for taking care of yourself By Mayo Clinic staff Caring for a loved one can be a strain on even the most resilient individuals. If you're a caregiver, take steps to preserve your own health and well-being. When you hear the word "caregiver" you probably picture someone caring for a parent with Alzheimer's disease. But a caregiver is anyone who provides help to another person in need, whether that's an ill spouse or partner, a disabled child, or an aging relative. Indeed, more than 65 million Americans provide care to a loved one. If you're among them, you know that taking care of someone who needs your assistance can be very rewarding. But it can also exact a high toll, and caregiver stress is common. Caregiver stress is the emotional and physical strain of caregiving. Individuals who experience the most caregiver stress are the most vulnerable to a decline in their own health. Many caregivers fall into the trap of believing that they have to do everything by themselves. Don't make that mistake. Take advantage of the many resources and tools available. Remember, if you don't take care of yourself you won't be able to care for anyone else. Signs of caregiver stress As a caregiver, you may be so focused on your loved one that you don't realize that your own health and wellbeing are suffering. Watch for these signs of caregiver stress: Feeling tired most of the time Feeling overwhelmed and irritable Sleeping too much or too little Gaining or losing a lot of weight Losing interest in activities you used to enjoy Too much stress, especially over a long time, can harm your health. As a caregiver, you're more likely to experience symptoms of depression or anxiety. In addition, you may not get enough physical activity or eat a balanced diet, which only increases your risk of medical problems, such as heart dis-ease and diabetes. TIPS FOR DEALING WITH CAREGIVER STRESS The emotional and physical demands involved with caregiving can strain even the most capable person. That's why it's so important to take advantage of available help and support. These tips have helped others deal with caregiver stress: Accept help. Be prepared with a list of ways that others can help you and let the helper choose what he or she would like to do. For instance, one person might be happy to take the person you care for on a walk a couple of times a week. Someone else might offer to pick up groceries for you. Don't give in to guilt. Feeling guilty is normal, but understand that no one is a "perfect" caregiver. You're doing the best you can at any given time. Your house does not have to be perfect, and no one will care if you eat leftovers three days in a row. And you don't have to feel guilty about asking for help. Page 12

13 Get informed. Organizations such as the Red Cross and the Alzheimer's Association offer classes on caregiving, and local hospitals may have classes specifically about the disease your loved one is facing. Join a support group. A support group can be a great source for encouragement and advice from others in similar situations. It can also be a good place to make new friends. Stay connected. Make an effort to stay in touch with family and friends. Set aside time each week for socializing, even if it's just a walk with a friend. Whenever possible, make plans that get you out of the house. Commit to staying healthy. Find time to be physically active on most days of the week, and don't neglect your need for a good night's sleep. It's also crucial to eat a healthy diet. See your doctor. Get recommended immunizations and screenings. Make sure to tell your doctor that you're a caregiver. Don't hesitate to mention any concerns or symptoms you have. RESPITE CARE It may be hard to imagine leaving your loved one in someone else's care, but taking a break is one of the best things you can do for yourself as well as the person you're caring for. Most communities have some type of respite care available, such as: Adult care centers. Many adult care centers are located in churches or community centers. Some care centers provide care for both elderly adults and young children, and the two groups may spend time together. Day hospitals. These hospitals provide medical care during the day. In the evening, your loved one returns home. In-home respite. Health care aids come to your home to provide companionship, nursing services or both. Short-term nursing homes. Some assisted living homes, memory care facilities and nursing homes accept people needing care for short stays while caregivers are away. THE CAREGIVER WHO WORKS OUTSIDE THE HOME. Two-thirds of caregivers work outside of the home. Juggling work responsibilities and caregiving isn't easy, and employed caregivers experience high levels of caregiver stress. If you're in this situation, try these tips for balancing your work and personal responsibilities: Learn to delegate. Share your work and home responsibilities with others. Ask your human resources department about resources your company offers, such as support lines or referral services. Then make use of these assistance programs. Keep an open line of communication with your supervisor and co-workers. Ask your loved one's doctor to send a letter to your company explaining the seriousness of your loved one's condition. YOU AREN'T ALONE If you're like many caregivers, you have a hard time asking for help. Unfortunately, this attitude can lead to feeling isolated, frustrated and even depressed. Rather than struggling on your own, take advantage of local resources for caregivers. To get started, contact your local Area Agency on Aging (AAA) to learn about services in your community. You can find your local AAA online or in the government section of your telephone directory. (Source: MayoClinic online health/stress) Page 13

14 Update from the Constitution and Bylaws Committee Over the past year, the Constitution and Bylaws Committee has been working on revising the Constitution in order to utilize the gifts of our members to serve more effectively. We have presented draft changes and have sought input from the congregation. We found your feedback very useful. Here is what we heard: Do not create more layers of bureaucracy. Not all people who serve on boards want to serve on Church Council. Streamline the current Constitution to allow boards and committees to continue their service without being bogged down with additional meetings. An effective church council should consist of people who have knowledge of the congregation, possess good leadership skills, communicate effectively, and are committed to the Christian ideals and mission of Redeemer. To be most effective the Council should be limited to members. We know that all boards and committees are important, but there are 3 core boards (Elders, Trustees, and Education) whose input is generally needed at each Church Council meeting. In addition, there are individuals whose gifts are serving on Church Council, but not necessarily to serve on boards. Below is a high-level draft outline of a proposed Church incorporating the core boards, peoples gifts, and your input. Four elected officers (President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer). One representative from three core boards (Elders, Trustees and Education). The members of these three boards would be elected. Three elected at-large members. Administrative Pastor (ex-officio member) Council meetings would remain open to any congregational member. A nominating committee will nominate potential new Council members, which would ultimately be approved by the Voters. Ministry Teams: All other current existing boards and committees would be termed ministry teams. Each ministry team will present a status update to the Council at least annually. The Fund Development team members would continue to be elected. The Nominating committee would work with ministry teams to ensure membership on the teams are well represented and utilize the gifts and talents of the members of the congregation. All ministry teams are welcome to attend Church Council at any time. This is only a start. There are many details to work out. In the coming months, as we work through the details and will present updates to the congregation and continue to receive your feedback. Please feel free to contact any of the committee members listed below. Thank you again for providing your prayers and valuable feedback into this important process. Michael Harvey, Pastor Heining, Jess Ihrke, Scott Okuno, Larry Stoen, Patti Tackmann and Ruth Weispfenning Page 14

The Board of Stewardship met earlier this evening and recommended that Redeemer, as the largest congregation in the Circuit and with a strong record of missionmindedness, commit to $12,000 year to support this ministry. To meet this commitment, they suggest that we designate 50% of the Lenten offerings (in the past this offering went to the regular budget and last year 50% went to purchase land in Kampala); 25 % of the Easter offering (75% will go to the budget as in the past) and 10% of the Christmas offering. It is estimated that this will total $5,000-$6,000. When Pastor Paul arrives, a mailing can be sent out to invite a voluntary, monthly offering over and above regular offerings. If a deficit remains, funds can be used from the District/Synod account, as has been done previously for the Uganda mission. The District has committed to this ministry for 3 years. We can adjust this funding, however it is a good faith commitment for 3 years. POBLO has oversight of the ministry and its effectiveness. OLD BUSINESS: DCE Intern Discussion We will bring in the new Pastor this summer and target an Intern next. Michael will prepare an informational presentation for the Voters Meeting. NEW BUSINESS: Technology Needs Update on proposal from Sim Sound Michael presented a proposal to improve the functionality of the AV equipment in the sanctuary. This technology can be used for sermon illustrations, congregational viewing of baptisms, visuals to supplement the sermon (video clips, verses etc). This is not intended to affect the style of worship, but to provide tools for our Ministry team to enhance our worship and meet the needs for the growth and development of our members. Currently, the lack of accessibility and ease of use have hindered the use of the equipment. The screen blocks visibility throughout various areas in the sanctuary. Two placements, developed by Sim Sound, for the installation of new equipment were presented. The first placement includes a wider, more universally visible screen, and would require the relocation of some lights. The second placement requires the pulpit to be relocated to the current lectern side. The screen would be on other side of the chancel, affording the chapel improved visibility. An additional screen would be placed in the chapel and monitors provided for the balcony. Some lights may need to be moved. In both placements, the projector would be mounted at the back or could hang down near the front of the sanctuary. What would look different in the sanctuary is what matters most to worshipers, and must be taken into consideration. Each proposal offers a choice of an analog, digital buffet or digital package to connect all equipment and hardware. The digital package, the most comprehensive, has a cost of $42,000. Sim Sound has done all related existing work in the church. It was suggested that we obtain additional bids, which may offer other ideas and a competitive cost. Funds are now available, eliminating the need to obtain a loan. To move forward with this proposal, members must be presented with information to understand the need. A presentation will be given at the Voters Meeting. Discussion is tabled until the next meeting. NEW BUSINESS: Mission Projects for 2012 Stewardship will recommendations for next month. After focusing much of the discussion on the support of the POBLO mission, the Board of Stewardship, with the assistance of Pastor Jim, reviewed and approved the following missional funding focus for 2012: Loose coin designations: 1. January, February, March Good Samaritan Fund 2. April, May, June Interfaith Hospitality Network 3. July, August, September Community Food Response 4. October, November, December Lutheran Association of missionary pilots Special Offerings 1. Lenten Suppers April Beckman education debt 2. Lenten Services 50% Budget 50% A.G. Paul 3. Easter Breakfast LCMS Youth Gathering 4. Easter 75% Budget 25% A.G. Paul 5. Thanksgiving LCMS World Relief 6. Advent Suppers Orphan Grain Train 7. Advent Services Uganda Missions 8. 16 NEW BUSINESS: 2012 Budget Next month, council will need to look at the 2011 actual budget to plan for the 2012 budget. The Associate Pastor compensation is based on 6 months, including retirement and health. The DPM R&H includes self and child. It was suggested that the Associate Pastor Moving Expenses be relabeled Transition Expenses to include interview costs such as hotels and travel, and to increase the budgeted amount to $10,000. The Missions category has been moved to the. Council will consider approval of the budget in its entirety at the January meeting. Housing Allowances for 2012: Requested $2500/month for the Administrative Pastor, Jim Heining; $2,750/month for the DPM, April Beckman; and $ 1600/month for the DCE, Michael Harvey. This is a portion of salary and does not affect the budget. Called Staff Salaries: The goal of the 2012 compensation increases is to approach 95% of the District guidelines for all Called Staff. The Associate Pastor compensation has been adjusted to new seminary hire for 6 months. Pastoral assistance has been provided. The DCE compensation is at 95% of guidelines. The DCM increase due with a Master s Degree will be phased in over 3 years, and by 2014 will be at 95% of District guidelines. Officer, Board and Cabinet Reports President s Report: The next step with spiritual gifts, Living God s Way: An Assimilation Team of 14 members met last week. Their goal is to support the mobilization of the ministry of new and current members, to encourage the use of their gifts in and outside of Redeemer. The Team has three parts: one will be a visionary team to provide oversight, one will be a new member focus group which is education based. It will utilize a condensed version of the Living God s Way material. The third group will be ministry mentors, intending to create a MAQ database, prioritize the MAQ questionnaires and assist members with finding connections while identifying high priority needs areas in the congregation. The group plans to meet again in late December and provide periodic congregational updates. Treasurer s Report: (Year-to-date) Income less expenses: $2,470. Cash available: $45,532. Mortgage Balance: $449,650. Church Growth: Work is continuing on the Photo Directory. Page 16 Elders: Agreed that a good time to invite Rev. Tom Ries (President, Concordia St. Paul) to preach would be during the vacancy. Provided input to Pastor Jim and Michael regarding technology needs and possible upgrades in the sanctuary. Considering a possible change to the Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day worship services in 2012, starting at 9:00 a.m. rather than 9:30 a.m. Decision to be made at a later date. Human Concerns: Volunteers served at Channel One and IHN will be hosted in January. Plans are underway to set up bi-monthly volunteer opportunities, and to contact Pastor regarding needs of individuals and families in need. Trustees: Currently installing lights above the new bulletin boards and continuing basic maintenance. The boiler pump motor caught fire recently and was replaced. Youth Ministry: Upcoming events include tubing in January with Grace, serving lunch at the Annual Meeting on January 15 and Pizza Ranch on January 17. In February, Super Bowl subs will be made and a Valentine s Dinner served. A final decision needs to be made regarding the memorial bench for Josh Evers. A Servant Event in Rochester is being considered. Staff Reports DCE: Michael has written the Sunday School Christmas program, and is co-directing it with Lynette Miller. He has written, and will direct, the Youth Christmas Eve Candlelight Service. He is working with the Connection Leaders and setting up a Skype opportunity for the youth and Ginger Lagergren. He has been working with the Board of Education to increase Family Ministry, is working on congregational presentations for the Sanctuary AV technology and the DCE Intern. He is also involved at a District level with various leadership activities. DPM: The organ was tuned to the wrong temperature, at great cost. April has requested a lock be put on the sanctuary thermostat box to prevent this in the future. Many Christmas musical practices and programs are being prepared and presented throughout this Advent and Christmas season. Preparations are beginning for the January through May music schedule.

19 PIZZA RANCH STEWARTVILLE On Tuesday, January 17, Redeemer Youth will be helping out at the Pizza Ranch in Stewartville. We need youth to sign up to help. We would like you to sign up and come in shifts. Transportation will be provided, if necessary. There is a sign up sheet on our bulletin board. Please indicate what times you can work and if you need transportation. Be sure to spread the word to all your friends. family, teachers, etc. The more that come to eat, the better we do. Lots of fun and the food is really good! Did you know that you can also order off the menu and they do offer Senior discount. The Youth will be selling their famous sub sandwiches again this year for Super Bowl Sunday, February 5. The cost for the subs this year will still be only $5.00. Orders will be taken before and after church services. There may be a few left over to sell that Sunday, but don t count on it. Besides we need to have a pretty accurate count as to how many we should make. You may also fill out the form in the bulletin and give it to one of the Miller s or put in the church office. Or, if you want, you can Lynora at millertwins2@charter.net. Proceeds from the subs will go in the Youth s Gathering, Bethesda and Chicago funds. Youth, keep February 4 open from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. That is when we will be making the subs. The more help we get, the faster it gets done and the more fun we have. CHICAGO! The mission trip to Chicago takes place June This is an amazing trip! This year we need to have our group finalized by FEBRUARY 1! Right now there is a sign up on the youth board to indicate interest. On January 8, after late service, all those interested in going need to attend an informational meeting. If you cannot make the meeting, send someone in your place. This requires one adult for every 2.5 youth! WE NEED ADULTS. The number of youth we can bring directly relates to number of adults going! This really is a completely amazing Spirit filled adventure. Sign up, come to the meeting! Initial registration will be $150, a real blessed bargain! Financial assistance is available. SUPER SUBS I would like to order subs at the cost of $5.00 each. Name Y.E.S. (Youth-Enlightened-Encouraged-Enthusiastically Led by the Spirit) On Sunday, January 15, the theme for Y.E.S. will be based on prayer. We will be doing crafts for the shut-ins and, hopefully, will deliver them around Valentine s Day. DON T MISS OUT! Check out these upcoming events! Super Bowl Subs Valentine s Day Dinner Page 19
