2 Pastor s Paragraph 2 The gifts [Jesus] gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some shepherds and teachers. Ephesians 4:11 So What s this NCPC Missional Ministry Conference May 13-15? Throughout the spring, as a congregation we are asking a question: just what is the race marked out for us that Hebrews 12:1 mentions? What are we, together and as individuals, supposed to be doing as followers of Jesus? Another way to ask this is what is the mission Jesus has given us? In this chapter of NCPC s story we re answering that question with the five missional callings Paul lists in Ephesians 4:11. The specific way we will be an intergenerational community that is inviting / growing / loving (our mission statement) is through these five roles of teacher, shepherd, evangelist, prophet, and apostle. So how do we become a congregation where everyone can say which one of these five is their primary job description? That s what the upcoming Missional Ministry Conference is all about. Since the fall, the NCPC session and staff have been working their way through a book which describes what such a church would look like. It s Alan Hirsch and Tim Catchim s The Permanent Revolution: Apostolic Imagination and Practice for the 21 st Century Church. We ve realized that becoming a church whose primary focus is to help members discover and live out their fivefold calling will require buy-in far beyond session and staff. We need you. If you serve this congregation in any role (or would like to) consider yourself invited to this significant event in the life of our church. Dr. Darrell Guder (an internationally recognized missional theologian, and \coincidentally a mentor to both Pastor Kurt and me) is kicking the conference off Friday evening from 7-9:30pm with a talk titled The Missional Church: Fad or Future? Throughout Saturday (-2pm) we ll get down to what this looks like at NCPC, organized around three D s: Discovering our calling; what we ll need to do differently; and the sort of disciple formation required to do this well. We ll wrap up the weekend on Sunday morning (Pentecost!) featuring Dr. Guder as our guest preacher. Along with the session and staff, I m convinced that attention to these fivefold callings promises a new season of momentum and adventure on the mission Jesus has given NCPC. 3 In Session 3 A couple weeks ago a friend asked me about how we track members of our church and what our response is when a member s attendance drops off. Would you be surprised to know we actually have a process for keeping up with our members? It is a partnership, or combination of efforts, by the Deacons, Session Elders, and staff. In the past year, Session has spent considerable time going over a list put together by staff and Deacon input tracking members we have lost touch with. We went over the lists, made some edits, called some folks, and came up with a chunk of names of members and friends who no longer attend, have moved to another city, state, who had made calls to people who asked to be removed from our membership list because of one of those reasons. This work was very helpful in updating our church records. When we receive a letter from a member or from another church asking that that person s membership be moved to their congregation, we change our membership records and send a letter to the new church basically releasing the member from our congregation. This is a function between the church office staff and Clerk of Session. That s the easy part. We hate to see them go, but are happy they found a new congregation. Recently I received a letter from a pastor across the country who was welcoming one of our families who transferred to another state. That pastor s letter held so much warmth and thanksgiving for this family, it was easy to see they are already loved as we loved them. That is not a sad event; they are still part of our family, just farther away. We can rejoice in their finding a new church home. But what happens when someone just stops showing up? It may be awhile before our system catches up with the fact that the person hasn t attended recently. We are hoping the new pew pads will help in tracking attendance, since many people did not fill out the Connection Cards. Once we see someone has been absent for a while, a Deacon will typically follow up to see if there is a need or if we can help. If there is an action needed, they will let the staff or session know, as the case may be. Is that enough? Probably not. The best way to follow up with absent members and friends is for each of us, the members of the congregation who notice someone has been away for a while, to contact them. If you are in a small group, it s easy to keep up with your members. Sometimes it s just a phone call saying We ve missed you that can make the difference in whether a person feels welcome in our church. So I encourage each of us to partner with the work the Deacons, Elders, and staff are doing to keep up with our friends and members. Every member here is part of the priesthood of believers. Let s take that seriously to keep up with and be blessings to one another. When and if a member needs to transition away from our congregation, for whatever reason, and lets us know, we want them to know our door is always open. Regardless why someone leaves, or just takes a break, we love our members and want for them to be in a spiritually rich congregation that works for them. If it s back at NCPC, all the better! 4 Youth Ministry 4 CO HR Youth Mission Experience June 26-July2 This summer, North Creek is sending a team of 11 youth and adults to serve in Central Washington. CO HR (pronounced core ) is a ministry partnership with Tall Timber Ranch to help prepare youth for local and worldwide service. Service projects will be done for communities near the camp, as well as a day spent in Okanagan to help with relief efforts from the devastating Carlton Complex fire of We greatly appreciate your prayers and support.
