1 Rev. Bogdan Milosz, Pastor E. Twelve Mile Road Warren, MI FAX: WEB PAGE stfaustinawarren.org Established July 1, 2013 DECEMBER 16, 2018 THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT OUR MISSION STATEMENT We continue the work of Jesus Christ and help everyone seek and experience the love and mercy of God. Fr. Bogdan s Corner What drives you? What gives you purpose? What gets you up in the morning? What keeps you going? It may be money, it may be your stock portfolio, it may be your wife or husband and the family, it may be an upcoming marriage or graduation? There is some drive in life. For us Catholics it is God. He is a God who has told us about Himself through the birth and life of His Son Jesus Christ. Within a few days with the first star in the sky we will begin Christmas Liturgies at 4 p.m. & 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve and 10 a.m. on Christmas Day. By participating in these Liturgies, we give ourselves the opportunity to become House of Bread which in Hebrew and Aramaic means Bethlehem. Jesus was born in Bethlehem and through the celebration of the Holy Mass, by consecration of the Bread and Wine He will be born in our hearts and mind. We will become the dwelling place of God. Are we ready to welcome Him under our roof? The last two Sunday s of Advent are designated to help us as individuals and the community to get ready for the birth of Jesus in this year. The Advent candle, that is brought to the Altar at the beginning of each weekend Mass by a representative of our parish, signifies the shortness of time left for the preparation for the birth of Jesus. Lighting a distinct candle (this year e-candle) symbolizes the coming of Christ, who is the Light of the World. It doesn t matter what color the candle is or where the candle is placed. What matters with Advent is your answers: Did I use my time wisely given to me by God, that is measured by each distinct candle? Am I praying each week of Advent longer? Am I reciting hymns and psalms often seeing the first, second or third candle of Advent? There is one more to be lit on the fourth Sunday of Advent, and then it will be December 24 Holy Night. Will it really be a Holy Night and Holy Day for you? On this Solemnity, change the routine you follow every day. Make this day very special for yourself, family and neighbors. Decorate your home inside and outside to manifest your identification with the Catholic faith, tradition and church. Before Christmas dinner whether on Christmas Eve or Day, Unleash the Gospel to yourself, and your guests by reading the proper Gospels: Matthew 1: 1-25; Luke 2:1-14; Luke 2:15-20, John 1:1-18, sing with your family Christmas carols and then eat your meal and open the gifts. The purpose of giving presents is to add a little joy to the greatest Joy generated by the birth of Jesus. Share with your children and guests why Christmas Day and Christmas traditions are important to you. Take them to the church for prayers, Holy Mass; simply let them breathe the spirit of Christmas which is so different than the rest of the year. Be a radical Catholic this year. Instill into our secular culture your religious decorations, use religious words, and say Merry Christmas. I don t think that a snowman in the front of the house is a good decoration. We don t celebrate the birth of the snowman but the birth of Jesus Christ. May God continue to bless you as we approach the end of our Advent Journey. Fr. Bogdan

St. Faustina Parishioners December 16, 2018 Living & Deceased Members of the Bloom & Susick Families requested by Family Oplatki You have seen in the bulletin and heard the announcement last week that Oplatki is available in the office. I would like to explain to those who don t know what it is and why it is used. Sharing Oplatki or Christmas Wafer is a Polish Christmas tradition. Before partaking of the Christmas Eve meal Vigilia the family gathers around the table, and the father or mother or even the eldest member of the Family breaks the Oplatki into small pieces and gives to each member of the family a piece. Holding it in their hand, they approach each other and take from each other a little piece and express Christmas wishes and wishes for the coming New Year too. The sharing of Christmas wafer symbolizes the unity of the family which many consider to be the main pillar of society. According to beliefs, the bond of unity should exist between family members. The father is seen as the link in the unbroken chain of One body, One Bread, One Christ, and One Church, while other family members join him in this eternal procession. Sharing the wafer also symbolizes forgiveness, reconciliation and love. When everyone has exchanged the wafer, the family members return to their seats and eat their Christmas meal. It is a good ceremony to be included into Christmas observance and tradition. It brings family members closer to each other. Fr. 4 PAGE 4 Thank You! On behalf of the Christian Service Commission, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the parishioners who so generously contributed gifts this year to the Giving Tree. We delivered over 500 gifts in all to local charities in need of help. Gifts donated this year ranged from much needed toiletries to sweat suits, pajamas, toys and warm winter jackets. Thank you to all the people who worked hard helping us sort, package and deliver all the gifts. Thank you again for your continued support during this Christmas season and for making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate in our community. Need the perfect gift for your spouse this Christmas? Give your spouse the gift of your time and love by taking your spouse on a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. January 25-27, 2019 in Troy, MI See website or call to register (888) Use promotion code GIFT2US to save $25 off the $75 application fee (offer expires on January 6, 2019) Stewardship Thoughts In today s Gospel from St. Luke, the crowds seek moral direction from John the Baptist, asking, What should we do? In a spirit of giving, which pleases the Lord, John instructs them to be generous with their clothing and food to the less fortunate, and warns tax collectors and soldiers to be true to their positions. The prophet Zephaniah and St. Paul, in his Letter to the Philippians, express joy in the coming of the Lord. During this joyous Advent season, follow St. John s declarations on charity and fairness toward our most vulnerable brothers and sisters. Express evangelization through our stewardship, such as by donating food to a family in need or participating in a parish giving tree.

6 PAGE 6 Third Sunday of Advent While we may never achieve perfect peace on this side of heaven, during Advent, we can work to bring the peace of Jesus to our broken world, beginning in our own homes and families. Pray that you and your family will grow in love for one another and in readiness to bring more peace to the world. Let us all look to Jesus in the manger, and open our hearts to receive the peace that can only come from Him. - Danielle Bean (Family Devotions for Advent) During this Advent season reflect on your life and see how you can enhance your spiritual journey. Below are some suggestions that were taken from Family Devotions for Advent by Danielle Bean: We should all pay attention to the noise in our lives and to those things that allow us to disturb our peace. Whenever possible, turn off the noise, whether it be inside or outside your thoughts, and say a small prayer in its place: Come, Lord Jesus, come. Forgive someone. It doesn t have to be about anything big or dramatic. It could be as simple as choosing not to return unkind words or actions with unkindness of your own. Say a prayer to Jesus instead. Make a conscious effort each day to stop what you re doing and pause to say a small prayer, inviting Jesus into your thoughts and activities. Tell God that you love Him and want to grow closer to him. Open your heart to hear what God has to say. Share your faith in some way you normally would not. Tell a friend you are praying for them or let someone know that God loves them. Bless someone with anonymous generosity. Think of a creative way to pay it forward, such as buying someone s coffee who is behind you at Starbuck s. Giving is contagious. Put a smile on someone's face by doing a random act of kindness.
