1 Established July 1, 2013 Rev. Bogdan Milosz, Pastor MAILING ADDRESS E. Twelve Mile Road Warren, MI FAX: AUGUST 18, 2013 TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Fr. Bogdan s Corner: There are only a few more days left before the end of summer vacation for the children at our parish. I hope that it was a safe & rejuvenating time for you. Meanwhile, I am reminding you about registration for new catechetical year. Parents talk with your children. Planning the school year includes religious education classes offered by St. Faustina Parish. Children are growing on physical, biological, intellectual levels. Help them to grow spiritual. Consider enrolling at our religious education program and call (586) Joe Kuligowski, Sandy Reaume & Patricia Shukwit are waiting for you. Summer has been a busy time for me & my staff. I am making adjustments for you and I am glad that I have a new family made up of two parents St. Edmund & St. Sylvester. You too are working very hard to adjust to each other. I want to congratulate all of you for this effort to form a much larger & stronger St. Faustina Parish. As you follow the process of merging two parishes you were informed that the church of St. Sylvester would be sold. The sale agreement took place on August 5th at Chanchery of the Archdiocese of Detroit. The buyer Catholic Chaldean Community is keeping the building alive. At St. Sylvester Church many people were married, baptized their children, provided education, etc. and this church will play the same role but under a new name. For all of us, this will remain as a symbol of change and transition. May God bless Our Lady of Perpetual Help and St. Faustina Parishes. May St. Faustina intercede for us in obtaining forgiveness for all aggravation and frustration that we all have experienced. Respectively, Fr. Bogdan

3 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS PAGE 3 PRAYER REFLECTION Thank you, great God and Father, for filing our hearts with trust so that we are of good hope, also for those who have not yet found trust. We thank you for giving us courage to face all the questions that arise in human life and for accepting us again and again when we come to you. You know what lies before us. You know the mountains that have to be moved. You know all the things that frustrate us and try to wear us out, and you will take them away. At last your light will shine into all the darkness. This certainly fills us with gladness and thanksgiving. In this faith we are determined to remain steadfast and to press on to victory. Amen. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CORNER The Religious Education Office is in full swing and hard at work registering your children and preparing for the coming year. Please register your children ASAP so we can place them in a class for the fall program. NOTE: Please do not stop from registering because of any financial issue you may have. There are options available, and we will work with you. If you are a new family, or have further questions, please stop by or call us at IN JESUS SERVICE JOE S THOUGHTS Jesus said to his disciples: I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. (Luke 12: 49 51) Ok, what did you think of when you hear today s Gospel reading? Above, I cite only a portion of it. There are two more versus, 52 & 53, where Jesus describes the depth and seriousness of the division using family relationships as examples. Wow! I don t know about you, but it is hard for me to picture Jesus saying these words. However, He did say them! I m sure all of us at one time or another sat around a campfire with other people. The group could have consisted of family, friends, new acquaintances or a mixture. There are always exceptions, especially when alcohol is consumed to excess, but the attitudes and conversations are usually cordial and jovial. It never ceases to amaze me how a setting like this enables people, when they allow themselves, to have rich discussions. It has to do with the act of looking at fire, a focal point, which helps one listen, focus, and respond. In a way the fire cleanses the mind of distractions and preoccupations. For me, this is the key to understand Jesus fiery words. Choosing God as my focal point frees me to respond to a GENUINE and INTENSE relationship with Jesus in a very real way! Through Jesus, all other false gods and worldly ambitions are washed away (Think Baptism!). Unfortunately, when fixations like power, prestige, selfishness, greed, etc., are recognized and rejected divisive situations develop between people that retain these mindsets. There is no way to get around it. A cautionary note: The process of recognizing, judging, and rejecting must be done respectfully in God s True Love with the help of the Holy Spirit like Jesus demonstrates. The Community of St. Faustina You are always in my prayers. In Jesus service Joe Kuligowski If you would like to become fully initiated into the Catholic Church, receive missed Sacraments, and/ or just want to learn more about what we believe, please call Joe Kuligowski a for more information. A group is forming and will begin to meet soon. Attention - Any students from 3 rd grade to seniors in high school are welcome to participate in this important ministry. We know God is tapping you on the shoulder! 5 PAGE 5 YOUTH CORNER 20 th Sunday in Ordinary Time: What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus (the first reading)? Jeremiah was a prophet around 500 B.C. and prior to that time the people of Judah had experienced a great loss by the Assyrians which involved two of the tribes of Israel to be taken barbarously. The Southern Kingdom Judah was all that remained of God s chosen people. They continued to follow pagan gods and pagan ways of living. Therefore, Jeremiah was sent hoping to get them to turn back their ways. King Zedekiah reined over the Southern Kingdom at that time and was the last of centuries of kings in Israel. He plotted with and then against the Chaldeans and King Nebuchadnezzar (Babylon). Jeremiah tried to warn him but the king didn t heed the warning. They tried several times to get rid of Jeremiah by starvation in prison and threw him into an empty cistern of mud to starve and die. We know God had further plans, because a follower of Jeremiah (servant of the king) proceeded to save him. Eventually Jeremiah was put in prison again which saved him from the upcoming tragedy. All of this ultimately led to King Nebuchadnezzar s overthrow of King Zedekiah and the again barbarously exile to Babylon for 70 years (the collapse of the Jewish temple and way of life) Why the history? God is present yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Jeremiah went through much emotional and physical suffering trying to get God s message to the people. We may not be put into cisterns, but to be a follower of Jesus will entail our own persecutions, because a commitment to Jesus will bring conflict in others lives. However, Jesus gave us His Holy Spirit when He told the disciples, I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing (Luke 12:49). Like Jeremiah we have a job to do to set the world on fire with the help of the Holy Spirit and it may not always be easy. May we not be afraid?
