1 Summer 2014 Vol. 80 No. 6 Trinity United Methodist Church Merchantville, NJ & Stay Safe! Summer is here! The season of sun, fun and relaxation. Whether your plans include a backyard barbecue, a trip to the shore or other outdoor activities here are some tips to help you stay safe while having fun. On road trips, it s a good idea to keep your medical insurance card, a list of medications, and key health and allergy information with your driver s license. Stay focused: Avoid fatigue by scheduling frequent breaks. Stopping for a snack, pulling over at a rest stop to stretch, staying overnight at a motel or hotel, and sharing the driving are all good strategies for avoiding fatigue and staying alert behind the wheel. Never leave a child alone in a car in the hot sun, even with a window down. If traveling with pets the same can be said, on a warm day temperatures in a parked car can reach 120 in a matter of minutes even with the windows partially down. When camping, remember to shake out your shoes every morning in case a nasty spider or scorpion took refuge in them. Never go to sleep with a campfire still burning. Douse it. Do not keep food inside the tent or hang it in a tree; put it in a car away from sleeping campers. Protect yourself and your family from mosquitoes that transmit West Nile Encephalitis and ticks that spread Lyme disease. A repellent with DEET is effective against both. Don t go hiking alone, take plenty of water, sunscreen, an extra layer of clothing, a compass, knife and some nonperishable food. If you re planning a picnic, don t keep perishable food at room temperature longer than four hours. Chill foods ahead of time and keep them cold until it s time to eat or grill them. Wear swim shoes around pools and in public showers to reduce the risk of athlete s foot; on a beach, they can prevent injuries from hidden sharp objects and keep feet comfortable on hot sand. Don t swim alone. Use the buddy system. Children should be watched closely at all times in and around water. And during all outdoor activities remember to WEAR SUNSCREEN! Whether your activities are in the morning, evening or mid-day, not only is sunburn bad for your skin, but it can also hinder your body s ability to stay cool. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. If you re thirsty, you re already dehydrated. You should be sure to drink throughout the day as well as every 15 minutes during exercise. (stay away from caffeine, water is your best choice) Don t ignore your body s signals! Heat related illness comes with warning signs. Heat exhaustion symptoms include: fatigue, nausea, headaches, excessive thirst, muscle aches and cramps, weakness, confusion or anxiety, drenching sweats (often with cold, clammy skin), dizziness, agitation, fainting, and slowed or weakened heartbeat.
2 Hello Friends! As the Sunday School year draws to a close, the weather heats up, we know for sure that summer is beginning. We had a very nice Children s Day picnic with a combined service with our sister church Pennsauken United Methodist. We watched Courtney Bird and Madison Lapp be confirmed and welcomed into membership. They are such sweet girls and wonderful addition to the church family! The only negative part of the day was an injury to one of the women from Pennsauken who fell down the basement steps. Please join me in prayers for her recovery. Our church now welcomes our new director of Music, Rocio Castaneda Villafante. I ve heard wonderful compliments from the congregation and we all look forward to working with her for what we hope will be a long time. Welcome Rosie! Before I close I would like to once again thank all the volunteers who serve as greeters, worship leaders, ushers, and fellowship hosts. As the summer months come, please remember that we still need volunteers and if you feel so moved, please continue to volunteer. WALK for ALL AGES Open To All Youth * Ages October Wildwood Convention Center, Wildwood, NJ Keynote speaker Preston Centuolo has been announced and is coming to IGNITE! A dynamically engaging communicator, Preston Centuolo naturally speaks right to the heart of youth, helping them see beyond pressing obstacles to seize their own unique purpose. Debbie Curcio Worship Committee Chairperson Train to be a Lay Chaplin Collingswood Manor, a United Methodist Assisted Living Community, located at 460 Haddon Ave., Collingswood, is offering training for laity to be a supplement to its hospice caring of dying residents. The ministry is know by the acronym: NODA-No One Dies Alone, and is led by the chaplain, Rev. Dr. Richard Leaver. He will be offering, free of charge, a seven week 16 to 20 hour training course to learn the skills of pastoral care for the dying. The course is beginning on July 12th and the next two Saturdays. (Dates may change) If you feel called to venture into such a ministry please contact the chaplain at (856) , ex. 305 for an application. Each session will run about 2 hours. On Sunday, September 7th (which happens to be Grandparents Day) Methodist Homes of New Jersey is holding a Walk for All Ages at Collingswood Manor. The course for the walk will be around Knights Park in Collingswood which is to the rear of the Manor. In addition to a walk there will be family fun activities, food, entertainment and more. The walk is being held to raise funds for The Fellowship Fund. The Fund is presently allocating 5 million dollars a year to defray the cost of residents at the Methodist Homes of N.J. No resident is ever turned out of a facility due to inability to pay having exhausted their financial funds. We will need walkers and persons to sponsor the walkers. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available. Karen Hoffman Collingswood Manor Ambassador
3 Trinity to celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2015 Almost 150 years ago, on March 11, 1865, a group of people who had been attending Sabbath classes in a private home and at the local school house met and voted to incorporate as part of the Methodist Episcopal Church of the Camden District. 4 Mindful Eating Ea ng with Inten on and A en on In our food-abundant, diet-obsessed culture, eating is often mindless, consuming, and guilt-inducing. Mindful eating is an ancient mindfulness practice with profound modern implications and applications for resolving this troubled love-hate relationship with food. Mindful Eating is: Eating with the intention of caring for yourself Bringing all of your senses to the table when eating Awareness of your physical and emotional cues Recognizing non-hunger triggers for eating Addressing your other needs in more effective ways than eating Choosing food for both enjoyment and nourishment Eating for optimal satisfaction and satiety Using the fuel you ve consumed to live a healthy, happy, active life Steps: Observe notice your body (rumbling stomach, low energy, stressed out? Full? Empty?) In-the-Moment be fully present. Turn off the TV. Sit down. When you eat, just eat. Slow down put your fork or spoon down between bites. Make sure you swallow what is in your mouth before putting in another bite. Savor notice the texture, aroma and flavor (is it crunchy, sweet, salty, smooth, spicy?) Be aware tasting vs. mindless munching Nonjudgement notice when should, rigid rules, or guilt pop into your head. Mindful eating can be a powerful tool for developing a healthier, happier relationship with food. Barbara Wilson, RD, CDE Vacation Bible UMC Mon. Aug. 11th Fri. Aug. 15th Pre-registration is greatly appreciated!!! Participants: Pre-K thru 6th graders. Volunteers: Youth (7th graders) thru adults.
