1 Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church 20 Monterey Circle, Lakewood NJ ~ visit us at: The Lantern I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of the life. John 8:12 SEPTEMBER 2013 Greetings from the Pastor..... Inside this issue: Music & Worship Who s Who? - LCW Thank You Sept. Servants Celebrations for Sept. Upcoming Events Order Mums Form New Bishop New Sign marks the 25th anniversary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The Church has taken as it theme, Always being made new. The theme comes from 2 Corinthians 5:17 herein Paul writes, so if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see everything has become new! Here at Immanuel not everything is new as we begin a new school year. On Rally Day September 8th, we will bless the backpacks, install Sunday school teachers, and celebrate with a congregational picnic. All of which we have done in previous years, yet each year, each Rally Day we celebrate a new beginning. Each new beginning is an opportunity to experience life anew, and to explore new ways to approach life both as individuals and as a community. Always being made new does not mean forgetting what has gone before, but rather building upon it. Be with us to celebrate on Rally Day September 8th, plan to stay for the picnic, meet and make new friends, in fact why not bring a friend, as we once again experience this opportunity to make a new beginning. Pastor McKinley Pastoral Acts Honoring A. Paerg A Ton of Food Food Pantry News 6 5 RALLY DAY! SEPTEMBER 8TH WELCOME BACK EVERYONE! We are so excited to start the new school year with all of you. LCW News LCW will have their first meeting on Sept. 18th at 7PM. We will be planning events for the coming year. We need your ideas and help. All women are WELCOME! Pastor ~ Rev. James McKinley Phone: (home) (cell) Pastor s jem.mckinley@gmail.com Church Secretary ~ Roxanne Rossano Phone: or secretary@ilutheran.net School Supply Drive ~ A BIG Thank You!!!!! ~ by Jenna Browne I don t like homework, but I like to get good grades and you can t get good grades if you don t do your homework. There are kids in our town that need help because their parents can t afford to buy food and school supplies. If they don t have school supplies, they can t do their homework and they won t get good grades at school. And they do need to eat good food so they can be healthy and strong. Thank you to all the people at my church who want to help these kids. For the past 4 years we have collected pencils, erasers, markers, pens, and other school supplies in the summer. Some people give money because they want to make sure the kits are all the same. We put the school supplies in bags and give them to the kids who come to our church s food pantry. I help my Mom and Miss Janice by Putting together the kits and we also make sure that the kits have the same number of supplies. It wouldn t be a good thing if one kit didn t have pencils and another kit didn t have crayons. Each kit gets a notebook, a folder, pencils, pens, highlighters, crayons, or markers, erasers, and fun things. The fun things are dictionaries, thesauruses, scissors, pencil boxes it s always a surprise because we don t know what we will find in the donation box! This Year we will give the kits to families when they get their food from the church s food pantry in August. When I do this, I feel lucky to have all the things that I do. I have food, a place to live, clothes, and a family. I am happy that I can help other people who don t have as much. Picture of bags on pg. 6
