FAITH IN ACTION PEN OF THE PASTOR 2017 I have a photocopy of a wire transfer fund. $11, was sent from Faith Lutheran s Wells Fargo account to Mission Investment Fund of the ELCA. It happened on It was labeled, Loan Payoff. That feels good! I m taking a deep breath of contentment. We are relieved and freed. OK, done breathing? Now then now what? What shall we do now that we are relieved and freed? We are freed from the weight of mortgage payments. But what are we freed for? We have a wonderful problem. What are we going to do with this freedom? What does our Lord want us to do now? What new opportunities do we have? What does our new freedom afford? We probably have as many ideas and plans as we have members! OK, the question is not what you think, but what we think. And we express our thinking in the words of our mission and our purpose statement. Those words describe our concern: Why does what we are doing matter? How do we do what matters? Faith has received and council is considering a Strategic Plan. Listed in that Plan are food security, event and community space, innovation in worship, arts integration and communication. These are ministries that we do. Those particular concerns were mentioned by members in our recent Forums led by Cole Powell. So, how does release of a mortgage debt help us to do our community garden or shared harvest or to be a voice advocating food security for our neighbors? How does release of a mortgage help us in our building use? How does release of a mortgage help Faith to make innovations in worship? How does release of a mortgage debt help Faith to pursue arts integration? How does release of a mortgage debt help the communication at Faith? Do you think of physical needs? Those are most obvious. They include our concerns for the parking lot, air conditioning, and cost of water use, lighting and all supplies. Do you think of program needs? Those are not as obvious but they provide the life our building houses. Program needs include staff salaries, worker compensation, and support. Have you thought of Jesus needs? What does the Lord need us to do to exercise the mission that is given us? Let us go forward together. The mortgage is paid off. Take a deep breath. Be thankful. Be energized. Go and do mission. Please see Judy or Tom Landis if you are able to help. Come to, Go to Serve. Dear Friends in Christ: A Mission here at Faith Lutheran was accomplished because of the generosity of our members. We have had many donations, large and small; potlucks; bingo nights, etc. toward this mission. The total offering directed to the Mortgage on Sunday, August 6 was $12, This money was given to the Glory of God and the Church to pay off the mortgage in full as of August 11, I had the privilege to go to Wells Fargo Bank and send a Wire Transfer of $11, to Mission Investment. IT IS DONE!!!! THE MORTGAGE HAS BEEN PAID IN FULL!!!!!! I was honored to be able to do that for everyone here at Faith. Thank you to each and everyone who supported this Mission We are free of a large mortgage, and now we can plan to move forward with a bigger outreach program. What's next here at Faith? Stewardship 2018 is coming soon, and that will give us all a chance to think and visualize a plan that each of us would like to see happen. A plan is underway for a grand potluck celebrating burning of the mortgage on October 22, God Bless all our members, friends, and Pastor Tom for making this mission possible. 4 Lord of Mercy Lutheran Church Welcomes Pastor Sarah Johnson Pastor Sarah Johnson was installed as pastor at Holy Cross Lutheran in Sparks during a service held Sunday evening at 5 PM, August 27 on the grounds of their new church site at 591 Los Altos Parkway. You may know that Lord of Mercy (LOM) had its property on Pyramid Highway taken for the sake of road widening at the busy intersection with McCarran Blvd. They leased a building at 9650 Pyramid. That building was sold and they are now holding services at Sparks United Methodist Church where the Rev. Gary Pope is pastor. Pr. Charlane Lines, the Lutheran Conference Dean, presided at the service. Many pastors participated in the installation service Pr. Tom Beck from Faith; Interim Pr Scott Trevithick of Holy Cross; Pr.
