1 Immanuel vangelical Lutheran Church The Lantern February 2013 Greetings. I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of the life. John 8:12 Get tickled this Lent... Yes! Lent begins February 13 th with our traditional Ash Wednesday services with imposition of Ashes at 11:30 A.M. and 7:30 P.M. This year in place of Wednesday midweek services we will offer midweek bible study opportunities; one at 11:30 A.M. and again at 7:30 P.M. each Wednesday. A soup luncheon at 11:30 and dessert and coffee at 7:30 will be offered. Our Topic will be "mbracing mergence Christianity" a series of studies and conversations based upon the work of Phyllis Tickle, Phyllis is the author of over two dozen books on religion and spirituality. The discussion is designed to help us in our understanding of the changes in our churches and culture. I believe this will be an exciting and helpful opportunity to increase our understanding as well as explore and expand our faith. Join me as we look at the church in the twenty-first century. 2 FBRUARY NWS CONFIRMATION CLASS WITH PASTOR MCKINLY The classes are mandatory and only emergencies will be excused and have to be made up. The dates are the first Wednesday of the month from: 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM February 6 March 6 April 3 Sign Fundraiser We need to repair or perhaps replace our sign. The messages have been sorely missed so much by all. We even had a perfect stranger call the church and ask about it and expressed how much she missed the inspirational messages. Our first project is a loose change collection. ach family can pick up a change collection box in the narthex. very week bring it back to be emptied into a general collection container. There is going to be a glass receptical that will indicate how our donations grow. Our goal is about $5000 to get a decent lighted tampered proof sign. Let's make the sign be a dream come true. Confirmation will take place on May 19th. Attendance is very important over the next 3 months and community service hours have to be submitted by May 5th. 3 OPPORTUNITIS FOR SHARING Many have commented on the new banners in the chancel and the Music and Worship Committee have devised several opportunities for all to share in sprucing up the church and enhancing our worship experience. We thank you in advance for your prayerful consideration. Donations can be placed in the offering plate. Please indicate the intended use on the envelope. Altar Flowers. The Committee has lowered the recommended donation for altar flowers to $20. We maximize that donation by purchasing the flowers from Stop and Shop rather than from a florist. We are going to be posting a flower chart to make it easier for you to sign up. The donation can be placed in the offering plate in an envelope marked with the purpose of the donation and the date you wish flowers to be placed on the altar. Paschal Candle. The earliest Christians blessed and lighted candles every Saturday night. By the 5 th or 6 th century the custom had become associated with the celebration of the Resurrection. The paschal candle is a tall candle that stands in the chancel area and is used during the aster season and for baptisms, confirmations and funerals. It is traditionally introduced each year on aster ve in the darkened church, symbolic of the darkness of the sepulcher that held the crucified Christ. A new fire is kindled, and the paschal candle is lighted, representing the Risen Christ, the Light of the world. These can be quite costly so this year we will purchase an oil-based candle that will allow us to use the same candle each year. The total cost of the new candle is around $300, but a donation of any amount will help defray that cost. Banners. Again, any amount would help as we replace fading banners and bring in new banners for the seasons that at this point do not have banners. xamples of this are the new Reformation banners used this year for the first time. FARWLL TO ALLLUIA! Because of the penitential character of the season of Lent, singing or saying the word "alleluia" has historically been suspended during Lent's forty days. This period of individual and congregational reflection on the quality of our baptismal faith and life suggests that the joyful nature of alleluia is more appropriately reserved for our aster celebrations when it is given full and jubilant voice. An alternate gospel acclamation for Lent that omits the alleluia is provided for all settings of Holy Communion: Return to the Lord, your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. The omission of alleluia during Lent goes back at least to the fifth century in the western church. The custom of actually bidding it farewell, however, developed in the Middle Ages. The hymn "Alleluia, Song of Gladness" (vangelical Lutheran Worship #318) contains a translation of an 11th century Latin text that compares an alleluia-less Lent to the exile of the Israelites in Babylon. The text then anticipates the joy of aster when glad alleluias will return in all their heavenly splendor. Along with a sung farewell to alleluia, some congregations have embraced the practice of physically "burying" the alleluia. This may take the form of actually placing a visual representation of alleluia in a hole in the ground, or of hiding it away after carrying it in procession around the church or worship space. This ritual practice is especially delightful and meaningful for children. Join us on Transfiguration Sunday, February 10 th, as we sing a special arrangement of the hymn Alleluia, Song of Gladness and bid farewell to alleluia! 3

7 Hymn Devotion for February Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days Lord, who throughout these forty days For us didst fast and pray, Teach us with Thee to mourn our sins, And close by Thee to stay. As Thou with Satan didst contend And didst the victory win, O give us strength in Thee to fight, In Thee to conquer sin. As Thou didst hunger bear and thirst, So teach us, gracious Lord, To die to self, and chiefly live By Thy most holy Word. And through these days on penitence, And through Thy Passiontide, Yea, evermore, in life and death, Jesus, with us abide. Abide with us, that so this life Of suffering overpast, An aster of unending joy We may attain at last! Claudia Frances Hernaman ( ) We don t know a lot about the forty days Jesus spent in the desert before His temptation. We know it was a time of fasting and probably of prayer. When the devil came to Him, the conquering words of Scripture were quick on Jesus tongue, so it may have been a time of meditation, a time of special communion with his Father. This song draws the comparison between Jesus forty days in the desert and the forty days of Lent. Traditionally, the Lenten season is a time of fasting. People give up, or sacrifice something for Lent. The idea is not to punish ourselves, but to put aside something that ma distract us from our communion with God. It is a time for special devotion to God, a time when He may abide with us in a special way. Lent is a time to refocus on our relationship with Christ. Immediately, the Holy Spirit urged Jesus into the desert. There, for forty days, alone except for desert animals, he was subjected to Satan s temptations to sin. And afterwards, the angels came and cared for Him. Mark 1:12-13, TLB Reprinted from The One Year Book of Hymns, Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. 7

9 MUSIC DURING LNT There will be several changes to the music during the forty days of Lent. Since we will be saying farewell to alleluia on Transfiguration Sunday, all liturgical songs that use the phrase will be switched to their Lenten alternates the gospel acclamation, and the post-communion canticle. The offertory canticle, Let the Vineyards Be Fruitful, Lord, will also be changed, although not necessary, to something a little less spirited. The Music and Worship Committee has agreed to use two verse of We Give Thee but Thine Own during Lent. There will also be a change in sounds being heard from the organ. Jeff will be retiring the trumpets and bright stops on the organ; instead, he will be playing with a more richer and fuller sounds, but not louder. The trumpet stops will return briefly on Palm Sunday as we sing All Glory, Laud and Honor, to celebrate Christ s arrival into Jerusalem, and will be silenced for the remainder of Holy Week until aster morning when they will make their triumphant return as joyfully welcome the Resurrection of Our Lord, Jesus Christ!
