1 Holly Calvary UMC N. Holly Rd., Holly, Michigan Ph Website: hollycalvary.org Sunday Morning Worship: 9:30 am for all ages: 11:00 am : 6:30 pm Pastor: Rev. Clifford J. Schroeder III Ph voice or text May 2018 Newsletter Coach s Corner: Greatest Hits May 15 Hilary Ann Estes Scholarship May 19 Treasure Hunt May 20 VBS Meeting June 10 Graduation Sunday June 19 Community Blood Drive July 23 VBS My favorite Christian music artist is Steven Curtis Chapman. For years, every time a new album came out I purchased it. While I enjoyed his music as a whole, I spent most of my time listening to only three or four songs on each album. They were my favorites. They stirred my heart; and I would often sing with those songs. After his first four or five albums, Steven put out a greatest hits CD. It had almost all of my favorites in one place. No more skipping songs on the other CDs. With today s mp3 players and ipods, where you can craft your own greatest hits set, my story doesn t seem all that amazing. But, back then, it was. Maybe some of you can relate. And still today, those songs from the greatest hits album immediately draw me in. What does this have to do with a pastor s article in the church s newsletter? Just this! Our church has a greatest hits album. God has put 150 people together in this congregation, and has crafted a unique church that is gifted and impassioned to bless our community with the presence of Christ from those strengths. Most, if not all of us, do not see our greatest hits. That is because we each carry pieces to the puzzle. Some of the pieces others are carrying will match a piece we are carrying. Some pieces that others are carrying may be totally foreign to us. Discovering our church s gifting and passion means sharing the stories about the pieces we carry. Your part of our greatest hits story comes from answers to questions such as; What are the best ministry and/or mission things we do or we ve done? Why? What is it about Holly Calvary that drew you here and/or kept you here? Why? What is the greatest blessing you get from being a part of Holly Calvary? Why? How has being part of Holly Calvary impacted your relationship with God? How have you perceived others growing in their relationship with God? Take some time this week to think, pray, and write. Then, bring it to church and give them to me or share it with our leadership team. 1 In His Grace, Pastor Cliff

5 FEATURES Library Corner - by Judy Wood May Mother s Day and a Salute to Heroes Traveling Light for Mothers; The Promise of Psalm 23- by Max Lucado How can you apply Psalm 23 to a woman s life? Maybe you can say, lead us into green pastures or lead us by still waters. Max Lucado enlightens us using the comforting message of the 23rd Psalm, the impact our excess baggage has on those we love and reminds us to listen to God s tender voice urging us to release those burdens we were never meant to bear. Sept. 11, 2001 A Time for Heroes - by Lance Wubbles Our country was attacked on Sept. 11, The date we all know as 911. It was a day of unthinkable horror and destruction, but it became a day for American heroes. Heroes rose out of the smoke, dust and rubble of the Pentagon, the Twin Towers, and on Flight 93. Ordinary citizens put their lives on the line and emerged as real heroes. Most of them remain nameless but this book is a tribute to their remarkable stories and a reminder of what true heroism and patriotism are. Thank you to the thousands of police, fire fighters, EMS and others who have dedicated their lives to helping others. Have a great Mother s Day and a memorable Memorial Day!! Love your sister in Christ Judy Wood United Methodist Now-Inspiration for Daily Living United Methodist Now is a biweekly e-newsletter for church members to highlight examples of Christian living, share inspirational messages, and focus on what it means to be part of our connection. You can easily subscribe by doing an internet search for United Methodist Now, fill out your contact information, then hit Submit. Easy as pie! The United Methodist Website The United Methodist Website has many resources and articles of interest. This month I chose to highlight What are the Four Areas of Focus in the United Methodist Church? If you would like a printed copy, please let me know. Ellen Pease The Four Areas of Focus express the vision and yearnings of the people of The United Methodist Church. Narrowing our focus to these four areas allows churches to use their resources effectively as they live out God s vision for the church. Note-Each of these sections has more information. 1. Engaging in with the Poor 3. Developing Principled Christian Leaders 2. Improving Global Health 4. Creating New and Renewed Congregations Holly Calvary UMC Phone Directories Available in Narthex May 6 th. versions will be sent out for easier phone access. 5
