1 TAWAS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Volume 44 Issue 8 August 2017 \ I may be tarred and feathered for even thinking this, but our Summer here in the Tawas area may be half over. Before too long, the children will be back in school, the leaves will begin to turn, and our warm days will be a thing of the past. This is a time of fun and rest and I hope that you are enjoying all that our community has to offer. But, my question is this, how will you be engaged in service and devotion to our Lord and Savior when this time of rest is over? Do you ever wonder why? Matthew 4:18-22 reveals the offer Jesus made to the Disciples to follow Him in ministry. As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea-for they were fishermen. And he said to them, Follow me, and I will make you fish for people. Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. As He went from there, He saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets and he called to them. Immediately they left their boat and their father, and followed Him. (NRSV) Immediately they left their nets, boat, and father and followed Jesus. Why? Why did the Disciples leave their occupations, possessions, and family to follow Jesus? I believe that they found something (someone) real and chose to embrace the ideals that He came to share. I believe that they were willing to give all that they had to know and to serve Christ in a real and personal way. They did not know the magnitude of who He is, but they recognized someone who would change their lives forever. I believe that most of us have come to the same understanding to some degree. This Fall we will explore why it is that we do some of the things we do. For example, what is it about Jesus that causes us to consider giving our devotion to Him? Why do we pledge our hard earned resources in stewardship? Why do we serve in leadership or service to God? It is my hope that as we journey through the Fall and approach Advent, we will have found new rational to embrace God s Son as our Lord and Savior. Enjoy the Summer! God Bless! Pastor Dan

3 TAWAS UNITED METHODIST WOMEN Well, the Summer is just flying by. Thanks again to all the folks that helped make the Rummage Sale another success. It looks like we made over $1,500. for Missions. It certainly does take a village to get it all done. We are still having the LUNCH BUNCH on the last Wednesday of the month at 12 noon at the BIG BOY Restaurant on US-23. We have an enjoyable hour getting to know each other a little better...and on the plus side have a very nice lunch. Please join us even if you have not before. August 8th, we will be meeting at the church at 9 am for the mystery trip. Of course, it is a mystery but we do have a great day. More details will be coming forth from Sally Nagy soon... just keep your eye on the ladies bulletin board on the long hallway for more information, there is a signup sheet up now. I hope everyone is enjoying what is left of the Summer and maybe thinking about some new ideas for the upcoming Fall Bazaar. Treasurer GRIEF SUPPORT PROGRAM 2017 St Joseph Health System provides a variety of Grief Support services for our patients, families, employees and members of the area community. They include Grief Support groups which are held monthly, on Thursday from 3:00 to 4:30 PM at St Joseph Hospital in Classroom C. These groups provide support and information for anyone whose life has been disrupted by a significant loss due to death of a loved one. All sessions are facilitated by qualified member of our Spiritual Care Team. There is no fee, however Advance Registration is appreciated. To register please call and talk with Chaplain Michael Sullivan, Manager Spiritual Care.

6 DO YOU KNOW? Do you know that there will be a Saginaw Bay District Fun Day at the Loon s Ball Park on August 26th? The fun will begin at 3 pm and the ball game will follow at 7 pm. The pre-game activities are free! Lawn tickets are sold out, but other seats may be available to purchase. For more information, please contact the Church Office. Do you know that Pastor Dan will be offering a youth confirmation class beginning in September? The class will be held on Sunday morning at either 9 am or 11:15 am. All youth, 11 yrs. old or older are invited to attend. Please contact Pastor Dan for more information. Do you know that an adult new member class will be offered this September on either a Tuesday or Wednesday evening? If you are interested in joining our church, please contact Pastor Dan. Do you know that if you or a church group are interested in sponsoring a fun meal or potluck for our church, the opportunity would be welcomed and greatly appreciated? It is wonderful when our faith community can gather for food and fellowship. We have a wonderful grill for burgers, hotdogs or whatever! If you are interested, please contact the Church Office. SAGINAW BAY DISTRICT CONFERENCE The Saginaw Bay District Conference will be held once again at our church on September 16th. Please consider how you may be involved during this event and how we may offer genuine hospitality to our sisters and brothers across our district.

7 LAYETTE MINISTRY The Layette Ministry is in desperate need. Items needed for Layettes: Blankets boys and girls Washcloths Bibs boys and girls Onesies boys and girls Blue ribbon Sleepers boys and girls Socks boys and girls If you are able to make a donation, please turn them in to the Church Office. Thank you, Melissa Our next Euchre night will be August 11 from 6-8pm. It s lots of fun and good Christian fellowship. A light snack is provided. There is a $5 donation with proceeds going to debt retirement. Come join us. No experience necessary.. MISSIONS CANDLE ON THE ALTAR You can support our Church's mission work while honoring or remembering an important person or event in your life by making a donation to light the Mission Candle on the altar. You would light the candle at 9:50 and extinguish it when the service is over. A note acknowledging your donation will appear in the bulletin on that Sunday, your donation will be used to support our church's mission work. Sign up in the Gathering Space on the Mission Candle" form, and turn in your donation to the Church Office or put a check made out to TUMC Missions in Carol Westcott's mailbox. YOUR CHURCH MAILBOX Everyone has a mailbox if you regularly attend church. The mailboxes are in the main hallway of the Church. Please remember to check your mailbox every Sunday. There is important information left there for you. There might be something there for you today! Please let the Church Office know if you change your address.

8 GIFT CARD PROGRAM Do you use gift or money cards? Our program offers the same 350 different gift/ money cards with 745 various denominations or methods to obtain money value to these cards. You can purchase directly from us or we can set up a family account which allows you to reload various cards you purchase from us. If you have reloadable cards you can add money to these cards and they are then available with the new value within 3-4 hours and you do not have to wait for us to get new ones for you. These are the same cards you can purchase at Walmart, Neiman s or Rite-Aid stores. If you buy these cards from us, we then earn various percentage rebates for our church to help fund special programs in our church. We want to thank everyone that desires to help us with this gift card program. LADIES MYSTERY TRIP Ladies are you ready for an adventure? Then join us for our Annual Mystery Trip on TUESDAY, August 8th. We will meet at the church at 9:00am SHARP! We will divide into cars and set out with "clues" to reach our destinations. The cost is $5.00 plus "spending money" for your treasures. You may sign up on the UMW Bulletin Board at church, call the Church Office, or contact Sally Nagy at Please let us know if you are able to join us by Sunday, August 6th, thank you. Come and help us find our way to the mysterious destinations. If you have questions call Sally but she promises not to disclose where you are going. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL THANK YOU Thank you to everyone that participated in our Bible school this year. It was fantastic! Our Bible School is recognized as the very best in the Tawas area and we thank you for your continued support. 47 students journeyed to Babylon and met the prophet Daniel this year.
