3 Along the (Sabbatical) Way August 2018 When I started researching the details of the Camino de Santiago I loved reading the stories and blogs written by people who had already been on the Camino. Their tips, tricks, and failures have already shaped how I am approaching my own journey. I experienced an unexpected resistance, however, to one odd characteristic commonly found in these stories: distances are usually listed in kilometers. It seems like an odd thing to object to, but I didn t like having to translate distances as they were described in other people s accounts. I know that it is exactly two miles to walk around the Big Block from my house. I can picture that a tenmile-per-day pace would be like walking around the Big Block approximately five times. Sure, I d have to figure in things like meals and breaks, but I can generally picture what that might look like. But looking at a route chart and seeing that it is 215km from St. Jean Pied de Porte to Granon? How many days of walking is that? If I see a sign in Spain that says it s 13km to Ledigos, can I get there in time to get a bed in a pilgrimage hostel, or should I prepare to sleep outdoors? It is becoming clear to me that part of the work of preparing for the Camino involves a mental shift. It will be more important for me to know how many kilometers I can comfortably walk before I need a break, because the environment I ll be in will be gauged in kilometers. Sure, right now I can do the math and know that 5 kilometers is about 3.1 miles, but I d like to be better prepared before I see a sign that reads 47km to Molinaseca. I imagine that there will be days on the Camino when I will be tired, hungry, and not interested in doing the math. If I can train my brain to think in kilometers instead of translating now, I ll be ahead of the game. I ve adjusted my training devices so they track my walks in kilometers, and I set my walking goals in kilometers as well. It still doesn t feel quite natural to me, but I m making progress!

Trinity has expanded its prayer life! As you may know, several people have been praying Morning Prayer on weekdays at 6:30am in the chapel for several years. Now the staff of Trinity has started praying Morning Prayer together on Thursdays at 8:45am in the Sanctuary. Both prayer groups are open to everyone - please join us! Bible Study Wednesday mornings, 10:00 to 11:00, in the chapel. Calling all who enjoy reading God's word and discussing what that may mean in our daily lives. Questions: contact Sarah Loomis The St. Ambrose Guild The St. Ambrose Guild (candle-care ministry) is finally in the last stages of creating the prayer candle stand in the Memorial Garden entrance! Are you ready to play with wax??? St Ambrose Guild will be having a worker-bee day on Sunday, August 12 from 9:30a - 1:30p for breaking candles, melting wax, sharing snacks, and making new candles. All ages welcome! Join us for a minute or an hour or more... candles take a while. Questions? Ask Wendy Electric candles will be used in the holders for safety and long term sustainability. Wax candles (created from melting and re-forming old Paschal candles, "Jesus" candles, and the leftover bits of vigil candles) will be available for purchase by donation, and taken home to be enjoyed during your own personal and family prayer times, or given as gifts to Trinity friends near and far. All monies collected from the sales of wax candles will be used toward batteries for the electric prayer candles Christmas Pageant CHANGE!!!!!! This year, we have decided to postpone the Christmas Pageant to coincide with Bishop Houghland s visitation on January 13, Thus, we will be having an Epiphany Pageant instead of a Christmas Pageant! As usual, I will be asking for names of participants in September and October. I am looking forward to working with all the children again. This is my favorite event of the year. Anne Uhrie Missions News School Backpack/Supplies Collection --- will be held in August by the Missions group. The usual collection boxes will be set up in the parish hall. We have had great participation in the past --- let's help the kids out again! Please, see bulletin insert for details Save the Date: Mrs. Claus Craft Show will be held in the parish hall on Nov. 10, the same day as Santa's Bag at the high school. This is a fundraiser for Missions. We hope you can come and shop and/or eat. If you are interested in renting a table for the show, see Sue Lackey. Share Dinner: the next one will be Aug. 31. This is a Missions service project, feeding people at the Share Center in Battle Creek. Most of the clients are homeless. If you would like to help, contact Joyce Connelly.

5 Diabetes Support Group Senior Health Partners is hosting a free monthly diabetes support group here at the church, on the second Wednesday of the month from 11:45-12:45, just before our fit an fun exercise class. Everyone is welcome. See Sue Lackey for more information. Senior Health Fitness Class Trinity is hosting a Senior Fitness and Fun class. This is free and open to the public age 60 & older. Every Wednesday from 1:30 to 2:30 pm, we share exercises anyone can do! Stretching, Flexibility, Balance, and Strength Building. Weekly health screenings will be available at the same time. We would love to see you and feel free to bring a friend! For info, please call Sue at (269) Youth Sundays are the second Sunday of each month. Please look for the sign-up sheet and tell us how you would like to participate. Our Trinity youth are looking for box tops for education labels to raise funds for their public classrooms. Just clip them, save them and bring them to the fellowship hall. The students will have a collection box near the kitchen. Tai Chi Class Continues On Thursdays at 6:00pm the Trinity Tai Chi group continues for all abilities. Tai Chi is a great, gentle way to add movement and balance to your life. The cost to drop in is $10 a class, so stop in and try it out. 6 Well friends, I did it! I finished the first year of deacon school. The third-year class graduated 10 people on June 16! 3 of those graduates (#humblebrag: all from the Episcopal Diocese of Western Michigan) were already ordained to the diaconate on June 30 th in Grand Rapids. The other 7 will be planning for ordination in the next 6 to 9 months, or continuing their studies as God has called each to do. I will be continuing as a second-year student in August. Part of our work for that second year is to be an apprentice of sorts in another parish. I have been assigned to St David s, Lansing, beginning in September Because of this field education placement, I will not be worshipping at, or involved with, Trinity for the next year. My last Sunday at Trinity will be September 16, and there are a few activities in need of fresh new ideas and leadership. Please let me or Mother Anne know if the Spirit is calling you to pick up the joy of coordinating: The St Ambrose Guild (candle ministry) Stewardship Committee (all things building, grounds, finance, and creation) Prayer Shawl Ministry (yarn and praying, what s not to love????) Building Use Coordinator (helping in-house and community groups get and use room/yard space) THANK YOU TO ANN MARIE RENAUD FOR HELPING WITH THIS Parish-Community Calendar (getting the building use information on the calendar so everybody knows when to be here and which room is theirs) THANK YOU TO ANN MARIE RENAUD FOR HELPING WITH THIS AND decorating the bulletin board outside the church office PLUS the 8 o clock service will need another lector and chalice bearer, and the 10 o clock service will need another coffee hour host. Now that the business is aside, I m offering a personal plea to my home church family please take good care of my daughter and husband who will still be worshiping with you here at Trinity while I am in Lansing each Sunday. This will be one of those sacrifices we ve talked about; being separated from those we love. Being without them during spiritually energized times will be difficult, but necessary, for all of us to gain a deeper relationship within our own faith lives, with God, and in the long run, with each other. Thank you for all of your prayers, votes of confidence, and well wishes for this school journey. I m excited to see where God is placing all of us in this coming year!
