Dear Trinity Newsletter readers! This edition is going out later that planned. Our office computer died and we replaced it, but along with replacing it, we needed to make sure all the applications and files were in working order! Thank you for your patience. Hope to get the April Newsletter out on time. The Trinity Office Staff

Along the Way March 2018 For obvious and tragic reasons there has been a lot of discussion lately about the problem of mass-shootings in our country. The conversation often goes similar to the following: The problem is that we have too many guns. No, there are plenty of people who own guns and don t shoot people, the problem is that we don t do an adequate job of caring for the mentally ill. No, there are plenty of people who are mentally ill and don t shoot people, the problem is violent video games. No, there are plenty of people who play violent video games and know the difference between entertainment and reality, the problem is bullying No, the problem is and on and on What I have noticed about these conversations is that there is a tendency to support one theory for the problem of mass-shootings, and then to argue with supporters of other theories, rather than pledging to work for solutions. I have yet to hear someone say, You re right. We don t give proper care to people with mental illness, video games are too violent, AND guns that are too powerful are too easy to get. Let s work from all of these angles to make sure mass shootings don t happen anymore! The problems that we face are complex, emotional, and overwhelming. It is easy to get bogged down while trying to understand such senseless tragedies. Defending one solution against all others may feel better to us because it makes fixing the problem seem more manageable. The trouble is that we get entrenched in our viewpoint and spend all our energy insisting that we are right, rather than taking steps to address the problem. I hope that as we continue to wrestle with these problems we will be more willing to listen to other people s viewpoints and admit that there may not be just one solution. It s possible that what we need is an array of approaches, not just one magical piece of legislation. If we can find ways to encourage others to work on solutions from their viewpoints while doing what we can from ours, we may find that together we have made enough changes to truly make the world a safer place.

Trinity Episcopal Church: Rector s Report February 20 th, 2018 It s been an interesting month, full of twists and turns brought on by the weather, the liturgical season, and my own health adventures! The Annual Meeting was held on January 28 th without a printed Annual Report due to my health setback, but everyone was very helpful and willing to be flexible. The Schnaares also had a quick vacation at the end of the month. Lent is upon us, and with it comes the familiar rhythm of our liturgical changes and Soup Suppers. I look forward to interesting programs and good fellowship as the season continues. This month I have participated in the following activities on behalf of Trinity, in addition to Sunday worship services and pastoral visits: Ongoing Commitments: Weekly Staff Meeting (Thursdays, 9:30 am) Morning Prayer (Thursdays, 8:45 am) Lenten Soup Suppers (Wednesdays, 6:00 pm during Lent) 1/16 Vestry 1/20 Fellowship Meeting 1/28 Annual Meeting (Combined 9am Service) 2/2-3 Trinity Institute Healing Racism Training (Coldwater) 2/5 Building and Grounds Committee 2/6 Pastoral Care Team 2/6 Standing Committee (Grand Rapids) 2/10 Bishop s Regional Gathering (Kalamazoo Recommended for Vestry Members) 2/12 Finance Committee 2/13 Bishop s Bible Study (Battle Creek) 2/13 Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper 2/14 Ash Wednesday 7:00am Imposition of Ashes (Trinity Chapel) Noon Imposition of Ashes (Oaklawn Hospital) 1:00 Imposition of Ashes (Trinity Sanctuary and Parish Hall) 7:00pm Imposition of Ashes and Holy Eucharist (Trinity Sanctuary) 2/15-17 Vacation 2/20 Community Dinner 2/20 Vestry The activities planned for the next month are as follows: 2/21 Spiritual Direction (Kalamazoo) 2/25 Trinity Trailwalkers 3/3 Bishop s Regional Gathering (Kalamazoo Rescheduled from 2/10 due to weather, recommended for Vestry Members) 3/4 Sabbatical Planning Team 3/5 Building and Grounds 3/12 Finance Committee 3/17 Standing Committee/Diocesan Council Meeting (Grand Rapids) 3/20 Vestry Dates to Remember: 3/1 Parochial Report Due 4/1 Easter

Trinity Episcopal Church Vestry Minutes December 19th, 2017 Present: Mother Anne Schnaare, Scott Neubecker, Debbie Egnatuk, Patty West, Andrea Tucker, Nancy Isham, and Anne Uhrie. Apologies: Tom Bayley and Scott Koch CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm. The Bible Study of Luke 1: was led by Nancy Isham. MINUTES After a minor correction, on a motion proposed by Debbie Egnatuk, and seconded by Nancy Isham, the Minutes of the Regular Vestry Meeting of November 21 st, 2017, were unanimously approved. CONSENT AGENDA On a motion proposed by Scott Neubecker, and seconded by Patty West, the Consent Agenda was approved by unanimous consent. BOARD OF MISSIONS Anne Uhrie reported that the BOM year end checks have been cut and signed and are being mailed this week. It was also mentioned that three new members were joining; Shirley Coulter, Jan Needham and Kristin Flynn. On a motion proposed by Scott Neubecker and seconded by Debbie Egnatuk, the Board of Missions Report was unanimously approved. EDUCATION/YOUTH Anne Uhrie announced that she was happy with how the Children s Christmas Pageant went and said that she thought all the kids did great and had a good time. If the Bishop s visit is in December next year (2018), it is planned that the Christmas Pageant will be on that day. Otherwise, it will continue to be on the 2 nd Sunday in December. It was also discussed that Anne would talk to the Fellowship Committee on assisting with the Marshall Holiday Parade float. The float was not well attended this year, and some consideration/discussions need to be had about what to do moving forward. On a motion proposed by Scott Neubecker and seconded by Debbie Egnatuk, the Education/Youth Report was unanimously approved. FINANCIAL REPORT The Financial Report provided by Diane Vezmar, was presented by Andrea Tucker. On a motion proposed by Patty West and seconded by Nancy Isham, the Financial Report was unanimously approved. BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS Scott Neubecker thanked Ivan Egnatuk for fixing/replacing the light in the Sacristy. Neubecker continued with the scheduling of the install of the Kinderhaus door, which is taking place on Wednesday, December 27 th, 2017 at 9am. This is expected to take one day, but if it runs long, Rogers Glass will be on site to complete the project the following day. Matt Tucker is getting bids on repair work for the vestibules. Money from the Georgia Clayborn Trust will be used to pay for this repair. Becky Wright and Marguerite Grupke have offered to paint the Sacristy, Vesting Room and vestibules (once repair work is complete). In addition, there is plaster work that needs to be done, to the wall above the doorway, leading from the Altar to the Sacristy. Neubecker has contacted Rogers Glass to, in addition to the Kinderhaus door, also take a look at the latching problem of the back (handicap accessible) door. Finally, MACS has offered to pay for the overage, for the 3 snow removals that were done, the week they were using the Parish Hall (December 11-15). We will wait until the bill arrives, for a total. On a motion proposed by Anne Uhrie and seconded by Patty West, the Buildings and Grounds Report was unanimously approved. NEW BUSINESS 1) A request from Randy Turpin, for repairs needed for the organ, was discussed (total cost =$1,200). The Vestry approved the repair work and stated that the money would come from the Sterling Murray Organ Fund (Nancy Isham motioned, Patty West seconded, unanimously approved). 2) On a motion proposed by Scott Neubecker and seconded by Debbie Egnatuk, the housing allowance of $15,000 for Mother Anne, was unanimously approved. 3) The 2018 budget was unanimously approved (motioned by Patty West and seconded by Debbie Egnatuk), with the following adjustments;

Add a line under Operating Income for Georgia Clayborn BOM Trust. Total amount will be $1,459 plus the interest earned in December. This total amount will then be added to the already budgeted $4,200, to the BOM budget line in Board of Missions Outreach. Add a line under Operating Income for Georgia Clayborn Sunday School Trust. Total amount will be $1,216 plus any interest earned in December. Substitute the Sunday School budget: $900 for Sunday School Curriculum and $316 for Christmas Pageant. Maximize the Music Director Trust draw and change the Transfer from Music Director Trust to $9,989 in Operating Income, change Music Director Salary to $26,000 and change Music Director FICA to $1,989. Add a secondary draw to the Operating Income to balance the budget (total amount of $12,094). 4) There are 4 spots to replace on the Vestry in Three 3 year terms and one 2 year term. Nominations have gone to Patty West and Julie Kaminski at this point. There being no other business to be considered, a motion to adjourn was proposed by Scott Neubecker, and seconded by Patty West, the meeting adjourned at 9:45pm, after a closing prayer was led by Mother Anne. Next Meeting: Tuesday, January 16 th, 2018 at 7pm in the Library Chapel at the Church.
