3 Along the (Sabbatical) Way December 2018 There is an aspect of sabbatical preparation that isn t nearly as exciting as all the adventurous walking. It s a piece that happens behind the scenes and is done in collaboration with lots of people. I d like to take a moment in this month s reflection and talk about the wonderful, longterm work our parish has been doing About a year ago, the Sabbatical Planning Team began meeting with the purpose of writing a grant proposal for the 2018 National Clergy Renewal Program, funded by Lilly Endowment, Inc. We were thrilled to learn that we received the grant! As our resources became more concrete, so did our work. The Sabbatical Planning Team became the Sabbatical Steering Committee (SSC), which is charged with implementing the plans included in the grant proposal. The SSC has continued to meet with a renewed focus: how will we make all of our plans happen? They continue to make contacts and do research to put Trinity s sabbatical plans in motion. These activities include a book study, a retreat, a Taize workshop, a labyrinth experience, and parties to kick off and wrap up our collective sabbatical time. Your Vestry has also been working hard to prepare for our sabbatical time. We recently had a retreat, led by Sarah Loomis, to discuss the preparations needed to make 2019 a full and richly blessed sabbatical year for Trinity. We brainstormed, explored ideas, and discussed ways that the Vestry, the Sabbatical Steering Committee, and other Trinity ministries can work together. We concluded our retreat with renewed ideas and excitement for the coming sabbatical adventure! You will hear more about how the sabbatical will work, how the Vestry and the Sabbatical Steering Committee will lead us, and how you can help. The Vestry will be paying special attention to the way we communicate, so that Trinity parishioners have every opportunity to know how our day-to-day operations are going and what events are happening while I m away. They will make very effort to make sure that no one is left out of the loop! I encourage everyone to keep eyes and ears open for coming information. Very soon we ll have a booklet describing the sabbatical process and outlining what Trinitarians can expect in the coming year. In the meantime, you have preparations to make as well! Please keep me, the Vestry, the Sabbatical Steering Committee, and all of Trinity in your prayers. I hope you ll also consider how God may be calling you personally to help. Perhaps you can step in to the Building and Grounds Committee or the Pastoral Care Team for the summer to help out. Maybe you can step up for a project or a ministry that you ve always been interested in. My prayer is that God will help us use this time to rest in Him, renew our commitment to God and each other, and reinvigorate us all for God s ministry.
4 Trinity Episcopal Church: Rector s Report November 20 th, 2018 We had our Diocesan Convention a few weekends ago, and it was a wonderful time of connection and renewal. We have a wonderful diocese here in Western Michigan, and it was a lot of fun to have our new delegates, Kristin Flynn and Todd Kaminski, experience convention. It was also a terrific joy to have Deacon Thom McPherson attend, along with his wife, Carolyn, who attended as a guest! Although it seems like we just had Halloween, I m also thinking ahead to the Annual Meeting. I hope people are thinking about nominations for Vestry, and also how they might serve as vestry officers or liaisons for next year! I m looking forward to the Season of Advent and the shift in focus that goes along with it. Before you know it we ll be talking about parochial reports and strategic plans, but for now I welcome the chance to slow down, breathe, and prepare the way of the Lord This month I have participated in the following activities on behalf of Trinity, in addition to Sunday worship services and pastoral visits: Ongoing Commitments: Weekly Staff Meeting (Thursdays, 9:30 am) Morning Prayer (Thursdays, 8:45 am) Pre-Marital Meetings (Buttery/Brock) 10/16 Vestry 10/17-10/25 Continuing Education 10/17 Sabbatical Travel Meeting (Kalamazoo) 11/2-3 Diocesan Convention (Lansing) 11/6 Pastoral Care Team 11/8 Sabbatical Planning Team 11/10 Attended Funeral: Marla Brinkmoeller (Pawpaw) 11/12 Finance Committee 11/12 Building & Grounds 11/13 Bishop s Bible Study 11/15 Spiritual Direction 11/16 Funeral: Lorna Llewellyn The activities planned for the next month are as follows: 11/20 Vestry 11/24 Vestry Strategic Planning Retreat 11/25-12/1 Vacation 12/4 Pastoral Care Team 12/10 Finance Committee 12/10 Building & Grounds 12/11 Bishop s Bible Study 12/13 Sabbatical Planning Team 12/18 Vestry Dates to Remember: 12/2 First Sunday of Advent 12/24 Christmas Eve (Services at 5pm and 11pm) 1/27/2019 Annual Meeting

Trinity has expanded its prayer life! As you may know, several people have been praying Morning Prayer on weekdays at 6:30am in the chapel for several years. Now the staff of Trinity has started praying Morning Prayer together on Thursdays at 8:45am in the Sanctuary. Both prayer groups are open to everyone - please join us! Bible Study Wednesday mornings, 10:00 to 11:00, in the chapel. Calling all who enjoy reading God's word and discussing what that may mean in our daily lives. The cost runs around $1500 and is paid for by the Diocese 1/3, the missioners church 1/3 (Missions Bd. would cover it) and individual fundraising 1/3. Applications are due Feb. 28. Contact Rev. Beth Drew at for more information MIT Chili Supper Coordinator, Todd Kaminski This year s MIT annual Chili Supper will be postponed until a more suitable date/time can be determined. I want to thank all Marshall Trinitarians who have supported the Chili Supper over the last several years; as food preparers, financial support donators, marketers, and most importantly volunteers who generously gave of their time to support event day activities, I hope I can depend on your support in the future. In the very near future our workgroup will determine a new date/time, fund raising goals, menu offerings, and event theme. The Chili recipe will remain our centerpiece offering! Thank you for your support as we go forward. Trinity's Annual Sunday School Pageant The Sunday School Pageant, usually performed during Advent, has been postponed to Epiphany to coincide with the Bishop's visit on January 13, Once again, I am recruiting actors, ages 2 to 22. There are parts for everyone, from village children with no lines to a lead role having dozens of lines. Since I write a new script each year, the parts are tailored to each child. Please contact me at auhrie@sbcglobal.net to let me know if your child would like to be part of our much beloved annual tradition. I need to know the names and ages of the children, and if they would like a speaking role. Thanks, Anne Uhrie 2019 Liturgical Calendars Trinity Church Calendars have arrived and are in the office. These 12-month liturgical calendars are available for purchase. On the back of each month's calendar sheet are printed the Lessons and Psalms for each Sunday and major feast day, along with suggested concluding collects for the Prayers of the People and liturgical notes. The cost is $5 per calendar. Advent Reflections Once again, The Living Compass is offering a devotional booklet for Advent! The booklets are available free of cost this year, and Trinity has ordered 20 of them. Please feel free to take one to enhance your prayers as we approach Christmas. If you would rather have an electronic version, the booklets are available for free download by visiting Episcopal Relief & Development We respond to storms in the United States and U.S. territories through our U.S. Disaster Program. Through our partnerships with Episcopal dioceses, we offer resources and training to help people prepare for disasters and provide emergency support so vulnerable people can make a sustained recovery after the storm. The benefit of our partnership with Episcopal churches is that these congregations are already deeply integrated within their communities. In other words, the Episcopal Church is there before responders arrive and will remain long after the news cameras have gone. You can help provide critical relief to affected communities by donating to our Hurricane Relief Fund. To donate and read the latest updates, visit
