1 Presbyterian Connection May 2011 Volume 18 Issue 5 From the Pen of Reverend Terry These past couple of weeks, I haven t been able to get the old adage April Showers bring May flowers out of my mind. Let s face it. This May our corner of the world should look like the Gardens of Versailles! The saying applies to other things than. It reminds me of the Psalmists cry that Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes in the morning. Psalm 30:5(b). This past month we have journeyed through Lent in worship and in our own lives. Several people have had surgery or been ill including myself. Vicky and her family have lost their home. Further afield our state and the nation has been hit with devastating tornadoes and floods. Internationally, Japan, Haiti and New Zealand are rebuilding after earthquakes and almost every country in Africa and the Middle East seems to be in a political uproar. Lest we forget, we are still at war in Afghanistan and Iraq. It s easy to get stuck in the showers, the Good Fridays and the night. It s easy to forget that there will be flowers, Easter is a reality and morning always comes. Shirley Lowe reminded me of this when she called to praise God for her improved health. Terry, she said "please let everyone know how thankful I am for their prayers. The prayers work. What a wonderful testament! In this time between Easter and Pentecost, I urge you to look for signs of God s grace and love. Don t stop there. Take the next step and tell someone about these Easter moments. I ll start. Like the Apostle Paul, I want to say I give thanks to God always for you 1 Corinthians 1:4 I m so proud of how everyone has pulled together to support Vicky and her family and so grateful for the care shown to me while I recovered from a virus. Through this I see God s hand reminding us that we are all God s children bond together in Christ. Many Blessings, Rev. Terry Hart 1

5 LIBRARY LINES FOR MAY 2011 The book of the month is a new book HEAVEN IS FOR REAL by Todd Burpo. This book can be found on the new book shelves. When Colton Burpo made it through an emergency appendectomy, his family was overjoyed at his miraculous survival. What they weren t expecting, though, was the story that emerged in the months that followed--a story as beautiful as it was extraordinary, detailing their little boy s trip to heaven and back. With disarming innocence and the plainspoken boldness of a child, Colton tells of meeting long-departed family members. He describes Jesus, the angels, how really, really big God is, and how much God loves us. Retold by his father, but using Colton s uniquely simple words, Heaven Is For Real offers a glimpse of the world that awaits us, where as Colton says, Nobody is old and nobody wears glasses. Heaven Is For Real will forever change the way you think of eternity, offering the chance to see, and believe, like a child. We also have the following new fiction books: THE JOURNEY by Wanda Brunstetter book 1 of a new series, WHO IS MY SHELTER? by Neta Jackson book 4 of House of Hope series, and A BOND NEVER BROKEN by Judith Miller - book 3 and the final book of the Daughters of Amana series. The new non-fiction book is: FORGIVENESS: A LEGACY OF THE WEST NICKEL MINES AMISH SCHOOL by John L. Ruth. All of these books can be found on the new book shelves. Faye Brackett, Librarian 5

6 Presbyterian Women (PW) Seventeen women attended the April 4th meeting. What a great time we had! The minutes of our monthly meetings are posted on PW s section of the bulletin board in the corridor leading to Memorial Hall. Please take a few minutes to review them and become more familiar with our activities, the missions PW supports - with your help - locally and beyond. Thank you, dear church family, for your wonderful response to PW s request to save the BEST CHOICE (BC) bar codes, our easiest fundraiser! We only need 200 more to make 1,000 and then they will be on their way to BEST CHOICE who, in turn, will send us a check for $60.00! Then, we re off and running again, starting to collect another 1,000 bar codes and another $ With your continued help, we can meet our goal this year of collecting 4,000 BC bar codes - for a grand total of $240.00! So, as you can, please shop BEST CHOICE and deposit the bar codes in the designated envelope on Christi s desk in the office. We appreciate your participation! Our next meeting is Mon., May 2nd at 11:30 a.m. - breakfast/lunch at the Village Wheel with Pam Hobart and Irene Bere, hostesses, and Dot Pitts presenting the Devotion. An item of discussion will be the Sat., July 9th Ice Cream Social fundraiser for missions we support. Tickets at $4.00 each will be available at the June 6th meeting. As usual, we will be collecting items for the Bull Shoals Food Pantry - bar soap and paper towels are badly needed. Ladies, do plan to be with us on May 2nd. Please sign up on the Reservations list on the office bulletin board on or before Sun., May 1st so that the Village Wheel can be prepared for us. Following this article is a listing of items needed by the children at the Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home & Family Services, Inc., in Monticello, AR. Our PW has been supporting the Home for well over 20 years with needed items and with monetary gifts. The ongoing support of Presbyterian churches is necessary in maintaining the housing and daily care of the children. We will be completing our study of the Book of Esther in our Thurs. 11 a.m. Bible Study class in early May, and then we will be taking a break until September. Our thanks to our leader, Pastor Terry and her assistants Norma Taylor and Amy Johnson, who have 6

7 PW, CON T... made the sessions exciting and making us eager to learn more. The Bible Study is open to all women. On Thurs., May 19th there will be a work session in Memorial Hall from 9 a.m. to noon. We will be working on the scarves Christmas project for the Food Pantry, and on favors for the Tues., Sept. 27th Brunch when we will host women from other Bull Shoals churches. Anyone wishing to donate money for scarves materials or for the snack bag treats that we provide for Food Pantry children, please see our treasurer, Mary Kerr. The children love these treats and can hardly wait to get them each month. We thank God for a church family who generously supports us in our endeavors physically, financially, with material goods and with prayers. For Presbyterian Women, Irene Bere, Moderator VERA LLOYD HOME CURRENT NEEDS We recently received the following list: Expo brand markers, loose leaf paper, folders w/pockets, bath towels, wash cloths, kitchen towels, alarm clocks, laundry baskets, hair accessories & socks. 9 MISSION MINUTE MAY-2011 OLDER ADULTS On Sunday, older adults fill most church worship services. They add much to the parish s ministry. Imagine what your parish might look like without an older adult presence. Would the laughter built upon decades of friendship and meaningful ministries be as loud? Would the fellowship of Christians who have gone through tough times together lead to as many hugs? Would volunteers be fewer? Would the Sunday offering suffer? Would worship attendance shrink? Older adults constitute a vital--often majority--segment of the church. They embrace the positive attitudes of Psalm (NIV): For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. They live God s goodness and want to share it regularly. Three organizations encourage older adult ministries. The Presbyterian Older Adult Ministries Network provides resources for persons involved in this age group s ministries. The Association of Retired Ministers, their Spouses or Survivors provides resources for retired clergy and their families and supports missions to the larger church. The Presbyterian Association of Homes and Services for the Aging serves older adults needing daily care. Please thank older adults in your church today. They form spiritual streams from which much ministry flows. May God bless our mature Presbyterians. (This article is taken from the 2011 Mission Yearbook - Page 121. Mission Committee 9

11 Keep Your Fork There was a woman who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live. So she contacted her minister to discuss her final wishes. She told him which songs she wanted sung, what scriptures she would like to be read, and what outfit she wanted to be buried in. The woman also requested to be buried with her Bible. There is one more thing, She said excitedly. What s that? came the minister s reply. I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand. The minister stood looking at the woman, not knowing quite what to say. That surprises you, doesn t it? asked the woman. Well to be honest, yes. The woman explained, In all my years of attending those church potlucks, I always remember that when the dishes were being cleaned, someone would inevitably say, Keep your fork...the best is yet to come! So next time you reach down for your fork: remember, by God s grace, the best is yet to come. Solar Under the Sun Camp! Ferncliff is home to Solar Under the Sun, a hands-on training in the installation of solar powered systems for mission projects around the world. The adults shouldn t have all the fun! Ferncliff is offering a Solar Under the Sun CAMP for campers entering 6th and 7th grade. Campers will build and cook in a solar oven, learn how solar panels work and help connect one to power a motor and charge a battery. This camp will intermix mission with going green. They will even get to make a solar s more! Solar Under the Sun camp will also have all the fun activities you love at camp! Ferncliff is S mores, but a Lot More! Did you know that if it weren t for a Presbyterian minister, there might not be s mores! That s right. Rev. Dr. Sylvester Graham, Presbyterian minister from New Hampshire, invented and promoted Graham Bread. That recipe grew to become Graham Crackers, without which, how would we ever have s mores?! So it is understandable why we Presbyterians have such an affinity for summer camps! And, since we have one of the best PC(USA) camps in the nation here in our backyard, sign your children up for camp before they fill up. All the favorite camps are back and improved. A split level deck on the Mosley Tabernacle is finished and makes for a perfect spot for small groups to gather. There are a number of new camps to try such as Amazing Race (International Fun), High Adventure Canoe Camp (Road trip to Missouri), Horsemanship, Solar Under the Sun Camp, and Wet-N-Wild. Plus all the favorites like Family Camp, Cook Off, Night Owl, Magical Mystery Tour and more. Visit for the schedule, online registration and scholarship forms, or call to have a brochure mailed to you. 11
