1 Presbyterian Connection April 2013 Volume 20 Issue 4 From the Pen of Reverend Terry Leaning on the everlasting arms, Safe and secure from all alarms Recently Tywllah forwarded the following to me, It s the URL link for a YouTube video. I realize what I just wrote makes no sense to you unless you use a computer. Which leads me to a dilemma, Do I address the content of the link or do I address the medium used to communicate it? Connect to this link and you ll see a hilarious presentation by a Baptist music minister. In it he sets the words of the familiar hymn, Leaning on the Everlasting Arms, to music ranging from 1940 s Big Band to Rap. To make it even more fun, he uses props. He does things like don an Elvis wig for the 1950 s. Talk about creativity! This light- hearted presentation underlines an important point. The message of this beloved hymn is the same throughout all the different musical styles. We can trust our Lord no matter what. We can also trust that there is no limit to God s desire for everyone to hear the good news. Many people will learn about Christ through the recent TV miniseries, The Bible. Some people may never hold a Bible in their hands the way we do, yet they ll hear the word on their IPod or read it on their Kindle. They may keep up with mission projects and missionaries through Twitter. They may study the Bible with their Facebook friends. Advances in communications technology happen so frequently and so fast that what I ve just written is probably obsolete already. Only the Holy Spirit knows what the next big thing will be. What I do know is this. Every advancement in communication brings new ways to share the eternal truth--jesus Christ. Many blessings, Pastor Terry 1

2 Dear Church Family, You are so wonderful to remember Troy & myself in so many ways. We greatly appreciated the cards & visits to the nursing homes. Also I appreciated the many cards, visitations, gifts of money and the attendance at the funeral. I appreciate your part in these activities and the wonderful cake & coffee after the funeral. I thank Rev. Hart for a wonderful meaningful service. I m grateful for the participation by the VFW & Auxiliary, U.S. Marines, and Rotarians. Also, my appreciation to the outstanding pall bearers. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful rendition of In the Garden sung by James Hart. I hope I have not omitted anyone. I appreciate all the loving kindness during my time of sorrow. 5 LIBRARY LINES FOR APRIL 2013 We have eight new books to add to our fiction books. The first is a series entitled: The New Beginnings by Mary Ellis. The featured book is MISSING YOUR SMILE: Readers will delight in this heartfelt novel by bestselling author Jerry Eicher, a former Amish man, who writes with authenticity and compassion about the people he grew up with. 6 MISSION MINUTE APRIL-2013 We Presbyterians often throw up our hands when we look at the graying of our congregations, fearing that in two decades or so the church will have shrunk by half. But there is an extraordinary opportunity for the transformation of these very congregations by persons around the globe who follow Jesus Christ. These Christians, often from the global South, have much to teach us if we are willing to learn and are willing to join with them. But there has to be a true partnership, in which we really do listen and join with them, one in which we don t assume that we have the right to determine how they must change in order to join with us. We must find ways to collaborate on our shared commitments to spreading the good news of the gospel and working for justice, peace, and reconciliation. Our number one job is to seek out for ministerial leadership the kind of people who see opportunities amid the apparently dismal news, who want to grow new churches and revitalize established ones, who respect all persons and are willing to learn from them. We need to seek them out, provide a theological education that supports them in ministry, and send them out in a position to take risks and perhaps fail--but hopefully succeed--for the sake of the gospel. These are the kinds of individuals we seek at Louisville Seminary. But we must be aware that the sorts of people who make great leaders are often the least compliant to rigid institutional norms and standards. They are not like us. This is good news for the future of the church. The challenges we face today are huge. But the opportunities are just as great. The Spirit of God is working amid the startling shifts of society, culture, and demography to create new hearings for the liberating power of the gospel. 7 PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN Oh my, the Presbyterian Women are on a roll and ready for a new year. We had 16 women attend our first meeting on Monday, March 4th at the Village Wheel. We all welcomed Betty Perrin and Frieda Danderson on their first time to attend P.W. You ladies know you don t have to be a church member to attend. Everyone is welcome! This year we are still in the planning stage for our Ice Cream Social, Potato Bash, Christmas in July Sale and our yearly Women s Luncheons, with all the church women of Bull Shoals. More information will be forth coming. Sadly this month, Esther Roberts will be leaving us to move to Missouri to be closer to her family. Esther was very active in P.W. She bought little gloves for the kids, made hats and never failed to make aprons for all the girls who worked in the kitchen or helped serve at many of our functions. Thank you Esther for all the support and kindness you have shown us in P.W.! Rise and Shine Girls, as we have moved our meeting time from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., still meeting on the 1st Monday of each month at The Village Wheel restaurant. Our next meeting will be April 8th. Please mark your calendar. As we close this report, let s not forget that Christ died for us and has forgiven us for all our sins. 8 ATTITUDE Submitted by Bob Hobbs The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important that the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company...a church...a home.a club. The remarkable thing is, we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past...we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude I m convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it - - or my attitude! Anonymous 8

9 April Puzzle I tried to catch some Fog. I mist. When chemists die, they barium. Jokes about German sausage are the wurst. How does Moses make his tea? Hebrews it. I stayed up all night to see where the sun went. Then it dawned on me. I m reading a book about anti-gravity. I can t put it down. I did a theatrical performance about puns. It was a play on words. I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me! PUNOGRAPHY They told me I had type A blood, but it was a Type O. Class trip to the Coca-Cola factory. I hope there s no pop quiz. Energizer Bunny arrested. Charged with battery. I didn t like my beard at first. Then it grew on me. How do you make holy water? Boil the hell out of it. What do you call a dinosaur with an extensive vocabulary? A thesaurus. What does a clock when it s hungry? It goes back four seconds. Broken pencils are pointless. 9

10 RECIPES CREAMED CORN By Darcy Burghard Ingredients 3 lbs. frozen whole kernel corn 1 stick butter 1 small pkg. cream cheese Directions Put all ingredients in crock pot. Mix & heat. Every time I serve this for company or at a pot luck, I always get several requests for the recipe. It is so easy to make and it is so good! - Darcie 10
